I have this simple question.

I registered a domain for a client, but entered a wrong primairy DNS server at the registrars records, the secondairy was correct.

All zonefiles were correct setup on the primairy same for the SOA.

After a day orso the domain could be reached, no problems, but suddenly my customers started complaining the server was down (he could not reach his site), i started looking and found out i could not reach it eigther, and then found out about the primairy mistake.

My question; if the secondairy is right there should be no problem reaching the site, or am i wrong about this?

If i'm wrong, why did the problems started after two days instead of right away?

Thanks in advance !

Yep your wrong, it depends on which of the DNS servers it gets it's data from to point to your server.

For a great example of this go to DNSstuff.com and enter your name servers a few time and it will give you the full path and all the places goes to get the information for your server. Do this over a few day at differing times.

Sometimes it will query your primary first sometimes it will query your secondary to get your primary, I have no explantaion why but it does.

Then its not much use having two DNS servers for redundant purposes is it?

I always thought if the requested info (or the dns server itself) was not found the secondary would be quired...

It seems like if the "wrong primary DNS server" was a real DNS server, and when queried returned a negative result, that the negative result would be accepted as authoritative.

Only if the "wrong primary DNS server" didn't respond at all, would your resolver move on to the secondary DNS server.

That explains it, thanks!

my domain also has the primary name server in wrong

but my site seems to be working for everyone.

will my site always load as long as my secondary name server is online and working???

because i have gone on the site from computers other than mine and it has loaded instantly without problems.

But if it wont load sometimes, even though my second name server is online, i will have it changed, but if it will work every time as long as my second name server is up then i will leave it

thanx

ps the domain im on about is not the domain in my sig, its one of my other domains.

As you can read from my experience above, i would definatly say no.
Besides that, I can see no reason why you would leave it "wrong".
