Hello,
Is it true that in order to transfer domain names in Canada, you must supply some written documents? First time I hear about this. Thanks a lot.

You just need to get the EPP auth code from your current registrar to transfer-out

No.
If a Canadian registrar is telling you that, it's time to move (or avoid going there in the first place).
I have quite a few domains under my control and moved them all from a US registrar to a Canadian company; from there I have transferred numerous domains to other Canadian or U.S. registrars - .com, .org, .net, .ca - never an issue.
I rather like the .ca names; changes show up fast!

OF COURSE NOT.

May I ask what kind of changes are you talking about? I actually think CIRA has a less frequent batch processing timeframe than say Verisign.

Thanks for your replies. I never heard of this either. I'm trying to help a new customer transfer his domain to us but his old provider is saying this non-sense.

Even i have never heard of this earlier. For domain transfer transfer secret is essential if the registrant details are yours. That must be provider own intention to stop the transfer.

1and1 but through a domain reseller. I spoke to the old provider again and told him to unlock the domain and provide me the AUTH Code. I had already initialized the process. The domain expired today though. I initilized the transfer last night. Hopefully this will work.

I recently went through this as well. I have a local design client and I helped him transfer his domain from ipower to namecheap. We had to jump through numerous hoops for 3 weeks just to get the EPP and the domain unlocked. Fax driver's license (multiple times), copy of business registration, etc. What a PITA it was. Thank God we started the process when there was still plenty of time left on the domain.
