View Full Version : Can I Change my Domain Registrar?
Luigi 04-16-2009, 03:11 AM ok, this might seem like a stupid question to all you vets out here, but here goes anyway -
if i register my domain at say.. godaddy, but for what ever reason i dont want to pay them anymore, can i move my domain to another company like say... namecheap?
it seems like its such an easy thing to do with a host, oh i dont like your service, your call center guy was rude, i'm switching..
but can that be done with a domain registrar? or are you stuck with the one you hit up first?
i ask cuz a few hosts out there offer free domains for as long as you host with them, but if you leave then you have to start paying the monthly's yourself. if the monthly's are pricey can i move to a cheaper one. or can i get a domain at a cheaper site then move it to the host and get it free as they say?
again, it all stems from can one change their domain registrar?
any input will be great! thanks
L
SiberForum 04-16-2009, 03:56 AM You can transfer domein name no doubts. That should be 60 days before the expiration date.
Luigi 04-16-2009, 04:30 AM oh great! so if im say with webhostingpad, which provides free domain regisration for as long as you are hosting with them, and choose to end it,i can move to hostgator for hosting of the site and move my domain name to say godaddy whos $1.++ monthly is a lot cheaper than enom's $15.++ monthly? provided i give webhostingpad, enom and godaddy 2 months notice.
hmm... good to know, thanks siberforum!

Luigi, you really need to research a bit more BEFORE making any move.

That's 60 days after domain Creation/Renewal date :)
Also i have transferred even 1 day before Expiry date!
Just ensure that your domain is unlocked before initiating the transfer process. :)

sorry if you misinterpreted anything, i was just using godaddy and enom as examples from what i see at face value. at the godaddy site they say
One 1 yr $1.99* .com, .us, .mobi**, .biz, .net, or .org domain per each qualifying product; new, transfer or renewal.
and an email from a hosting company has told me -
3) Yes, you can keep that domain name. You need to pay $14.95
4) Yes, we are registering domains from eNom. It is an ICANN accredited registrar.
these about keeping my domain after moving hosts.
granted i haven't even looked at the eNom site. but thats cuz its not the point of the thread. i just wanted to know if i could transfer domains to another provider if i wanted to.
but true, i do still have to do more research before getting my site up.
Your in good hands with ENOM, it just matters how the hosting company takes care of you. I'm not sure how you are seeing the $1.99 domain transfer from GoDaddy but the transfers start at $6.99. :)
webwerksin 04-16-2009, 03:03 PM Yeah godaddy is not giving domain transfer for 1.99 but 6.99 its 1.99 only if you buy another NON-domain product from them ...
netearth 04-16-2009, 07:09 PM You might also want to check out if the loosing company (the company you are hosting with at the moment and giving you that free domain name for life of hosting) has any special terms for leaving them, like you might need to pay a transfer out charge.
Just something to check and my 2 cents.
vincyvish 04-17-2009, 02:56 AM Yes you can tranfer the domain provided
1)60 days older from the date of registration/ renewal
2)it's status is unlock
3) you have the transfer secret
4)Admin id is is existing.
hosting guru 04-17-2009, 03:33 AM Yes,you can,This is generally a hassle free Process.

The 60 days "rule" only applies to domains that are NEWLY registered or TRANSFERRED. Renewal with your current registrar does NOT count.
