View Full Version : Question about forwarding email in cPanel
If you create a mail forwarder in cPanel, the destination email address receives a copy of the email, which is OK. However, the original address also receives the email.
So let's say someone prefers to use gmail. They redirect their domain mail me@example.com to me@gmail.com. They read all their email in gmail. They never access me@example.com in a mail clent or webmail. Therefore, the problem is that the mailbox me@example.com still receives the email, even though it is forwarded. So eventually, the mailbox gets full unless it is emptied.
Is there any way to redirect email of your cPanel mailbox without leaving a copy in the original mailbox?

I believe you'd need to setup the default address in cpanel for that domain to be :blackhole: or the fail option, and then create a forwarder without a mailbox also existing for the same.
That should ensure that the mail isn't stored in a mailbox and doesn't land up in the default account mailbox (which is just the cPanel username).
In the case of this customer, I currently have a cpanel account in which the default addy is set to blackhole. I also have several mailboxes with forwarders. Still, when looking at disk space used in cpanel, I see that these mailboxes are building, building, building.

The solution to this is simply remove me@example.com as an email account but leave the forwarder me@example.com intact. This will ensure the mail to that address is only delivered to their GMail account and is not stored on your server.
ThatScriptGuy 04-13-2009, 02:53 PM Vito - You need to create the forwarder in cPanel, and that's it. You don't need to create a physical mailbox on the server - Just the fowarder.

As the other two said, you don't need the mailbox as well. Sorry I wasn't clearer! :)
