I am seriously thinking about getting a dedicated server with he.net, and would like to hear from any customers who have dedicated servers there. What are your experiences with them?

Thanks, and happy easter (I know I'm a day late here, but better late than not at all).

I had a shared account with Hurricane Electric, and was unimpressed with their service. The fact that they don't have their dedicated server packages posted, with prices, makes me VERY suspicious. I distrust any host that requires you to e-mail them for information that most other hosts feature prominently on their websites.

Deb Suran, thank you for your reply.

To be fair, when I emailed them, I got a very quick response. However, I get the feeling they usually only host for large companies who need a large amount of servers, and that's why they don't have pricing for their dedicated servers on their web site.

We toured he.net in 1999 before deciding to go with above.net to provide datacenter facilities.

he.net has it together. they are a good company and anna shaver (one of their higher up sales managers) was awesome.

the reason i leaned towards above.net over he.net was because i disagreed with their philosophy of promoting public peering points (mae-east/mae-west) and their datacenter was less professionally managed than above.net

don't get me wrong, i think that he.net definitely has some clued people working there, and they are a very legitimate business that is doing a great job. their pricing also completely blows away above.net, and they are probably 'better value for money' than above.net, exodus, fgc and most other 'tier-1' providers.

for example, at he.net you can get a cabinet with 10mbps for $4000.00 (this was in 1999). at that time, you couldn't get above.net to talk to you with regard to that service for less than $8000.00

I still got a quote at $4400 (full cabinet and 10mbps on 10mbps switch port) from their data center at Fremont, CA.

Just realized, it took only 7 hops visualroute.datametrics.com (Herndon, VA) to he.net (Fremont, CA data center) and 15 hops from my location to abovenet.net (San Jose, CA data center). And I think Fremont and San Jose is nearby too. Wow! 7 hops is impressive!

He.net patched me through the Anna Shaver right the first time I emailed them about a dedicated server. I got an offer for a 400Mhz Pentium 2 with dual hard disks (I think they were something like 5 GB each, I'm not too sure though). And she said they'd give me free rent of the server and free rack space if I signed up for a year -- I would only have to pay for bandwidth usage.

However, when I replied that I would initially only be using a few gigabytes per month, I didn't get a response. Looks like I'm not a big enough client. :(

Well, I'm hoping my email just got lost over easter, so I resent it now and will keep you updated.

Looking forward to hearing what they have to say. Keep us posted.

:)

I think you are right... You should know that server and rack space cost money. The only way they can offer free server rental and free rack charge is by charging you some money for the bandwith usage. Now if you only you few gigabytes per month, that would only give them around $10 profit :D

But still, I think it was rude not to return your mail. They should just say that "in that case, you have to pay for the server rental", not just ignore you that way. :(

I finally got a response from he.net (after resending my email). Looks like they lost my original email over easter.

Anyway, they want almost $15 per GB per month. Surely that is quite a lot to pay? Moreover, they won't sell me any less than $200 worth of bandwidth every month. While I can live with having to buy at least $200 worth of bandwidth each month, having to pay $15/GB is simply too much. I will look elsewhere.

That's just simply too expensive! Quite contrary to the quote I got... $400 per mbps (well, for 10mbps of bandwith prepurchase). I remember their 384 kbps (120GB) is less than $300/Mo, if I am not mistaken... $15/GB/mo is just plain expensive... How much bandwith do you need and what is your budget? I can probably direct you to a better/cheaper host...

cheers,

He.net only charge this much if you're using 15 GB/month bandwidth or less. They get much more competitive as soon as you start using a lot of bandwidth.
