I woke up yesterday, looked at my site and.. o my god!!
After some hours I knew what was going on. Someone was using my ip address on his server. I just moved 3 sites to my raq4 and they were all down. And of course.. nobody was there to help because of easter.
This morning I tried to take other ip's on the network and found out that it's very simple to take a free ip address.
I got an email from them:

Apparently we mistakenly assigned the IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to two
customers. I have reassigned the IP addresses [blabla]to you to fix this problem. If you just change this on your Raq, your customer sites
will be fine and display properly.

Sure! But I'll have to change the DNS records and my sites will be down again until the DNS is updated.
:bawling:

I hoped this was because a customer stole the ip, but it was a mistake from them. Rackshack was the first company that impressed me.. but now...

Eriky,

How did you manage to contact Rackshack during Easter?

I requested 2 additional IPs from them last Friday, but haven't heard back from them yet and assumed that everyone was on holiday and that I wait until Tuesday.

Did they answered your e-mail or replied to open trouble ticket?

I hope it was not my server which got your IPs ;)

Oh I think I mailed the CEO but I would never mail to such email addresses if it's not as urgent as it was yesterday.
I send emails to 2 addresses from their contact page.

It's all fixed now, the ip's got mixed up but i guess it's just a little incident. I always have those stress-generating-problems everywhere so maybe god is punishing me for something. ;)

I understand that RackShack give 8 free IPs with their RAQ4i package. Did anyone able to get more than 8 IPs from them? And how much do they charge for the excess?

They give you 1 IP for free and if you have a justifiable reason you can email them and request up to 7 more for free. The charge $4/mo for 4 IPs plus a $29 setup fee.

RackShack have great prices on their RAQs but a $29 setup fee for every 4 IPs is rather steep -- in addition to a justifiable cause to have them. Many providers charge from $0.25 to $2.00 per IP without setup fees and a few others offer unlimited free IPs as long as 80% of them are in use.

Well i think that having the first 8 ip's for free is great. I don't need more. and i think most people don't need more than 8 ip's.
Oh and by the way..
Upgrading RAM to 256 mb for example costs $128 (29$ extra every month) . Is that why they still make money of this? I think they charge a higher monthly fee because people could actually use the full 150 gb with more ram in their systems.

Man I know the feeling... It happen to me too. I have a server at catalog.com and I wake up one morning to find that half the sites aren't working. Turns out some bonehead goes and steals 6 of our 8 ip addresses. The weird thing was they were in two completly different blocks of 4 addresses!

After working with catalog they find the offender and try to contact him but to no avail. They ended up just killing the guys machine so it'd quick screwing up things :D Now that's service! ;)

I wish they would do that for me too. The guy is still using the ip by the way. It seems like there is no such thing as 'assigning' ip's to somebody.. one can take any ip they want =(

Please clarify for me....

A. Somebody else at Rackshack changed their servers IP to yours???

B. Or rackshack gave duplicate IPs?

The latter is not so much a security issue as a management one, but the former is a huge security problem.

If A is the case, please leave me a private message with the details of the incident. I would like to contact Rackshack and make them aware of a severe security risk. Other hosting copanies have experienced similar problems.

I just recently moved my clients to dedicated servers at Rackshack. My clients could afford thier prices and this gave them more secure servers than with shared hosting.

Thanks ....

Sorry if I 'misleaded' you.
The answer is:

B. rackshack gave duplicate IPs

I don't think their security is at risk.
