This post might upset many people, but after reviewing the board I find it rather interesting when I see a post called:

5 great hosts, but I only need one.... or
Have you ever heard of any of those 5 hosts...

1. Can we say advertising....
2. Wait once again, Can we say advertising

Its like these 5 companies hire people to go in and make these posts..

These 5 companies might be great, could be the best in the business, but there so similiar in so many ways, just pick one of them and youll be fine.

I see the same posts every time I come and check the board.

Nothing against these 5 companies, but out of all the charts of top hosting companies, and current rankings, none of these companies list anywhere to be found(neither does mine)...

Ive reviewed all of them, and comparable there are still so many solutions. I mean at current stats there are 16k hosting companies.. It just so happens to be that this is a VDI based board..

Many may call me a TROLL, which IM not, but anyone who comes to this board must see my point on why I am sick of these posts. There should be a seperate spot for these 5 companies maybe...

When it comes down to it, these 5 companies run such a small % of the hosting world(im with them) that dont matter what is said the BIG GUNS run the show...

It really seems that unless you got your own NOC, you are at the hands of the other players..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the wise words of my 89-year-old grandmother:
"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sadly my own webhosting service is not one of the five golden children either, but I am not going to whine about it. The most recommended sites have earned their high marks based on kindness to others and super service to clients. I don't have a problem with that.

I do business with one of them and given my deep sense of right/wrong, I will not hesitate to share my concerns with others if that company betrays my trust and good nature. *shrug* Just as I share my negative experiences about other companies. But they haven't earned my scorn, hence I share what I can -- which happens to be positive.

And try as they might, perhaps this board is proof that a company cannot snow consumers with a huge marketing/advertising budget. "Bigger isn't better" and when service lacks (be it connectivity or support), customers notice. If these companies would dump that funding/effort into service, their client base would be happier, more loyal, stronger, and... you'd hear more good things about them here.

Joe, take it as a lesson to use with your own company. Don't follow the same screwed-up path as others have. It can't be illustrated more clearly than it has been here...

I agree with what you have to say, and I dont mean to whine at all, if it comes off that way, thats not how its ment.

In regards to business. I have used all of the big companies, before I started my business based on doing things different then all the big players.

I guess after using the big players, you learn what not to do with your customers.

I am proud to say that throughout the few hundred clients we currently have, we havent loss one yet. We have turned some business away, and refunded some clients based on our choice, but overall customer support is where money should be spent.

The problem I address is merly a problem of people constantly recycling the same posts over and over again. I admire a great company who takes pride in taking care of the customer. Thats how it should be, this is more of a board problem I guess.

In regards to the kitchen, I can stand the heat. I get calls all the time about comparison checks or what not.
Ive been playing this game for 2 years now, and feel confident.

Though good points and I need to sleep more.

There isn't much you can do about it. And it isn't confined to the hosting industry. I've seen it time and time again on many forums. Don't know if it's one person under many ID's or the person gets his/her friends to do it for them. But it happens.

And I think this may have something to do with the perception of you being a troll (honestly). If your name was on the list of five mentioned, and someone posted what you posted, what would you call them? Just wondering.

To a degree, if you'd pick any of the hosts here, you'd do pretty good. That isn't the point. I've stopped recommending hosts since really, there are so many great hosts (who are members here), that it isn't easy for me to even begin to pcik. I don't know who I'd pick even (if I needed hosting).

The five hosts listed in that thread were:

- DreamHost (Code Warrior Plan)
- JaguarPC (Advanced Plan)
- Site5 (WebPower Plan)
- Ventures Online (Venture 4 Plan)
- WizardsHosting (Plus 300 Plan)

One of these, I've never eaven heard of. The others have made a name around here more themselves by providing a good service, and participating in discussions here. You can get to know them just by reading posts (to an extent), just like people know you (to an extent).

Like you said, there are 16K hosting companies, and few of the top 5 are discussed nor recommended here. People here seem to prefer a smaller host, one they can talk to, know, one who knows them. They are signing up more based on the person than the offer or the company.

Anyway, I have to cut this short and go to work...

I don't see where there's any evidence of anything underhanded going on. People recommend hosts they're familiar with, and in this forum often those run by people who've established a presence here, and more importantly have established a good reputation here.

So people are, just like in the rest of the world, most comfortable with recommending people they feel they "know." Any host can come in here, conduct themselves constructively, and build a similar reputation.

Of course, it helps if they don't keep completely quiet about the name and other details of their company.

Its a board thing, I have no problem speaking freely about my company, I'm not saying you should defend that; I think there are perfectly valid reasons while some regulars here don't identify their companies and others do. My point was this: the hosts that are most recommended here are those that 1) maintain a presence here, 2) are run by people who are helpful and polite to other people here, and 3) have at least as good customer service and network reputations as anyone else.

It's really a pretty simple formula. I'm not saying that you or anyone else should fee obligated to follow it, but it's how most of the highly recommended here came to be that; conspiracy theorists notwithstanding.
