I administer a domain and website for a client of mine.

I have had a request from someone who administers the office computers for my customer asking for access to the "DNS manager". He wants to make changes "when they (my client) is ready"

I have never come across this situation before with any of my clients.

As I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer ... can anyone shed light on what he might possibly want to do?

Thanks

Hello,

Most likely, they are asking for ability to change the nameservers for the domain name.

However, they could also be asking for ability to edit the actual DNS records for the domain name...

Thanks for the reply.

Could you explain what for purpose he might want to
- change the nameservers?
- and why he might want to edit the actual DNS records for the domain name?

Sorry for being lost here but this has not happened before with any of my other clients and I have not got an response from him. I don't think that there is any malicious intent here, I just want to know why.

Thanks

Change of nameservers is to point the domain to a different hosting provider.

Edit the DNS for the domain would be to add subdomains, modify what mail server is handling mail, point the domain to a different server...

If your client is asking for these changes, I would suggest taking a step back and asking them what goal they wish to accomplish.

Then, based on their response, you can help them as best possible.

We have many customers who ask us to do something for them... and when we ask "what exactly would you like to accomplish", we often find out that they don't have a clue what they are doing, but some program or person told them to ask us to do something... and if we had done it.. their website/email would have stopped working, etc.

I have a response from him.

The client is going to host the email on the exchange server at their office so they want to change the MX record...

Thanks for the input here!!
