View Full Version : What FTP client do you use?
ThatScriptGuy 04-01-2009, 11:00 PM I've had my fill of issues with CuteFTP Pro and I'm ready to switch. What FTP/SFTP client do you use? My only must-haves are that it support FTP AND SFTP, that it have a built-in text editor, and that it have a tabbed interface (So that I can edit multiple files at once).
So far nothing I've demoed has even come close to what I'm looking for. Cost isn't really an issue. I just need a program that works well, and has a similar layout and feature set to CuteFTP.
larry2148 04-01-2009, 11:46 PM SmartFTP. not really sure if it has a built in text editor though.
dotRoot 04-02-2009, 12:07 AM For Windows, IPSwitches WS_FTP and FlashFXP are both good. FlashFXP has a built in editor I believe.
jjp-hp 04-02-2009, 12:18 AM What don't you like aobut CuteFTP? If you don't mind me asking.
ThatScriptGuy 04-02-2009, 12:21 AM Once every couple of weeks I experience some other new issue - Files not uploading completely, even though cuteftp says they were (This one kills me - Sometimes I'll edit a file quickly, save it, and close it, only to find out that it only uploaded 75% of the file...)...Sometimes the transfer queue is completely black and I can't read anything.
Just minor annoyances that really ruin a great piece of software for me..
patord 04-02-2009, 02:49 AM On win32 platforms I use winscp (which supports ftp, sftp, scp, and now ftps). No built in editor, but you set whatever external editor you want (I use winvile). No tabbing, but I use wintabber (the last free version) to simulate tabbing via multiple instances of winscp. I also use wintabber to tab the gazillions of putty sessions I have open.
So this does not exactly match your needs 100%. How I do it is not completely "clean", but winscp and wintabber cause me less grief then many of the commercial stuff I've messed with. Winscp is constantly updated, which is nice. I just wish winscp had a Linux version because Filezilla and gFTP just plain suck for extended usage.
Best of luck in your search...
jjp-hp 04-02-2009, 05:53 AM Yea, I was in the same boat as you and I tried the others but I got so used to using CuteFTP for such a long time that I made a full circle and came back to it. Hope you have better luck.
dazmanultra 04-02-2009, 06:39 AM Filezilla seems excellent from what I've seen of it.
Deem3nŽ 04-02-2009, 06:53 AM WinSCP is the best client I ever seen
sydelhost 04-02-2009, 08:45 AM I personally prefer Filezilla, Its easy to use and its free.
ServerManagement 04-02-2009, 09:02 AM WS_FTP is one of the oldest and most popular. It's simple and easy, but not free. This should have all the features you are looking for.
jNive 04-02-2009, 01:05 PM i use filezilla myself, and some systems using the filezilla server if they are windows-based
KmacK 04-02-2009, 01:08 PM I use Filezilla for windows and cyberduck for mac both work great and are free.
viabandwidth 04-02-2009, 01:17 PM w00p...still use my trusted old version of WS_ftp OR sometimes I like to use winSCP....and sometimes command line FTP.
Oh Ya...and Fetch for Mac
IGXHost 04-02-2009, 01:21 PM SmartFTP and Filezilla are the two that I use. FileZilla is free.
dotRoot 04-02-2009, 01:33 PM SmartFTP is free from what I remember as well.
webtown 04-02-2009, 02:47 PM WS_FTP is one of the oldest and most popular. It's simple and easy, but not free. This should have all the features you are looking for.
YEs, I have absolutely same idea. I have been using WS-FTP for years ( Let me think about it.. I guess more than 4-5) and never been regretful and never think about change:)
But I can say fiezilla is free and good..
Also, txftp is free online ftp that you may want to try..
VIPoint 04-02-2009, 07:53 PM I've been using FlashFXP since 2002. They haven't released a new version in quite a year though.
cselzer 04-30-2009, 03:22 PM Windows.. WinSCP
Linux... wine WinSCP
Newwebsite.com 04-30-2009, 03:26 PM Why not use the one that is built into Windows. Open My Computer and type in the address bar ftp://example.com and it will prompt you for a username and password. Drag and drop files just like you would on your own hard drive.
cselzer 04-30-2009, 03:27 PM Why not use the one that is built into Windows. Open My Computer and type in the address bar ftp://example.com and it will prompt you for a username and password. Drag and drop files just like you would on your own hard drive.
doesn't support sftp
Newwebsite.com 04-30-2009, 03:36 PM doesn't support sftp
Sorry I pretty much just read the subject line.
I use Secure Shell Client http://web.wm.edu/it/index.php?id=2928
dotcomUNDERGROUND 04-30-2009, 05:14 PM I use CuteFTP Pro too.
I like the built it html auto-complete feature of it.
Is there any other client out there to provide all features of CuteFTP Pro?
singh-admin 04-30-2009, 05:31 PM CuteFTP for sure .............no doubt
waikit86 05-01-2009, 06:16 AM I use FileZilla on Windows and FireFTP (a plugin of Firefox) on Mac
spdfox 05-01-2009, 12:01 PM FilleZilla And TotalCommander
IGXHost 05-01-2009, 12:05 PM SmartFTP is free from what I remember as well.
I believe they offer a trial period only
solor403 05-04-2009, 03:19 PM I've got CuteFTP however recently I've become pretty familiar with FileZilla, both are good FTP programs
MichelleH 05-04-2009, 03:24 PM Personally I love my LeapFTP
I second that for Leap FTP. I have been using it for years now.
solor403 05-04-2009, 03:55 PM SmartFTP offers a Trial, however it will continue to work after the trial period, just kind of gives you those annoying opening pop ups telling you to register. Also if i remember correctly you lose a few features, but overall its not a bad program for basic ftp use
sven30 05-05-2009, 12:39 AM These are the 5 I swear by. All for different uses and users:
filezilla - RECOMMENDED for my simple site clients for FREE
CuteFTP - Recommended for more advanced clients.
Fetch - For my Mac clients
Dreamweaver - For my webdesigners/developers clients/resellers
WinScp - For ssh FTP, drag and drop stuff in a box as root.
file-freekin-zilla. Too bad WS_FTP stopped the nag-ware (10 years ago). I'm still bitter.
under_gravity 05-05-2009, 05:43 AM the nice old total commander still works for me :))
webhost18 05-05-2009, 06:22 AM FileZilla works better for me (free).. cuteFTP also good but it is not free..
drokmed 05-08-2009, 05:21 PM I just wish winscp had a Linux version
Krusader. It's the linux equivalent to the Windows WinSCP utility.
Yes, it's a KDE app, but it will install and run in gnome just fine.
nerdster 05-08-2009, 05:30 PM FileZilla works better for me (free).. cuteFTP also good but it is not free..
Same here. I just use FileZilla.
It gets the job done so I can't complain.
coloheart 05-08-2009, 05:57 PM Free and coreftp.
MaRiOsGR 05-22-2009, 05:27 AM I use FlashFXP , after all the others i've tested (free and commercial) this is the most pro (my opinion).
note that it's not free.
YazuHost 05-22-2009, 08:19 AM I use CuteFTP
Some times, I use FileZilla.
Regards
jcroom 05-22-2009, 08:29 AM FileZilla :D
realvaluehosting 05-27-2009, 04:11 AM On win32 platforms I use winscp (which supports ftp, sftp, scp, and now ftps). No built in editor, but you set whatever external editor you want (I use winvile).
WinSCP has inbuilt editor.
I was also searching for FTP client better than CuteFTP and I came across about BitKinex - http://www.bitkinex.com
I really liked and it is free.
Anybody else has used it?
mattle 05-27-2009, 06:23 AM WinSCP - PC, CyberDuck - Mac
AquariusStorage 05-27-2009, 06:25 AM This is an obvious answer, FileZilla for your FTP needs.
jackpx 05-27-2009, 06:25 AM Filezilla and totalcommander
maknet 05-27-2009, 09:28 AM WinSCP is the best client I ever seen
Another vote here!
I'm not sure a super integrated FTP + Editor is really necessary.
Lawrence
Can't go wrong with FileZilla.
biggestbh 05-27-2009, 10:46 AM FileZilla and Winscp is my choices, there are lot other softwares available for download, but this two I am using for long time
SenseiSteve 05-27-2009, 01:56 PM I've always used WS_FTP and have never had any problems. Filezilla sounds interesting though, so I'm thinking I'm going to test it out.
Zethx 05-27-2009, 02:12 PM Normally i use SmartFTP or FileZilla
s2mu3123 05-27-2009, 02:46 PM For Windows, IPSwitches WS_FTP is very nice and Filezilla is also good to use.
Stevie21 05-27-2009, 03:31 PM I enjoy using FileZilla, its fast, reliable, easy to use, updates regularly, what more can i ask for.
blessen 05-27-2009, 04:03 PM WS_FTP and Cute FTP are good

Lawrence
AMHosting 05-27-2009, 05:01 PM I use filezilla, works great and is free

N1CK3RS0N 05-27-2009, 07:45 PM Haven't seen much say FireFTP for FireFox. I love it
I use filezilla, both client and server, works pretty well, I must say.
Remember when WSFTP was free?? :)
Those were the days...
SLH-Ken 05-27-2009, 08:11 PM PC: Filezilla
MAC: Transmit
TheHostingPalace 05-27-2009, 08:18 PM no no no.

I agree! WinSCP FTW, have it ported for every OS I use :D
realvaluehosting 05-27-2009, 08:22 PM It seems nobody has used BitKinex - http://www.bitkinex.com as yet.
Try it and I am sure you would love it :)
TailoredVPS 05-27-2009, 11:31 PM I use WinSCP.
http://winscp.net/
It can connect to SFTP and normal FTP plus you can edit the files right inside the client.
shotthebreeze 05-28-2009, 12:03 AM I liked SmartFTP until it crashed constantly at start up, so now I use Core FTP Lite and I love it.
WL-Michael 05-28-2009, 12:07 AM I've always had a thing for CuteFTP. Love it!
kpmedia 05-28-2009, 04:06 AM WS_FTP on main computer, WinSCP on others.
predator788 05-30-2009, 10:09 AM WS_FTP
I think the best I ever did use
314Hosting 05-31-2009, 01:33 AM I personally use Cute FTP ( Professional Edition ). It's quite best software ever i seen on the internet. You can use FileZilla, it's also a good free ftp software.
Moris 05-31-2009, 08:21 AM Another vote for FileZilla. Ease, reliable and free ;) . It looks like the developers work hard on it as the updates are coming quite often.
mme42 06-04-2009, 06:42 AM Personally, I use Filezilla with Notepad++. Works well for me :)
JokerHacker 06-04-2009, 01:08 PM filezilla is good and open-source, specially i support open-source projects
Tristan Perry 06-04-2009, 01:12 PM I use filezilla; best FTP program I've come across that works in Ubuntu :)
Used to use CuteFTP Pro on Windows, that was a pretty awesome program.
SC-Daniel 06-04-2009, 01:26 PM When I am using my Windows computers I love WinSCP... Always use SCP/SFTP of course ;) Normal FTP just doesn't cut it!
When I am on my Macbook I use Cyberduck w/Smultron for editing.
JokerHacker 06-04-2009, 01:32 PM I use filezilla; best FTP program I've come across that works in Ubuntu :)
Used to use CuteFTP Pro on Windows, that was a pretty awesome program.
u'r a ubuntu user! i love ubuntu users!
nicolas_ 06-04-2009, 05:52 PM On Macintosh here, I use Coda. On my Windows laptop, I use FileZilla.
RackPoint-Andrew 06-04-2009, 06:27 PM I use FileZilla if I have many files to transfer.
Otherwise I will just use cmd line from my mac.
If I was still stuck on windows I believe I used to use smartftp.
I think fetch is good too for mac...though I don't use it.
Kohrar 06-04-2009, 09:06 PM CuteFTP on windows at home, otherwise command line.
eacollin 06-06-2009, 08:40 AM The 2 I use are
- Cuteftp Professional
- Filezilla
The-Pixel 06-06-2009, 01:09 PM LeapFTP w00t w00t!
Ryan G - Limestone 06-08-2009, 07:05 PM I'm a long time user of FlashFXP which was mentioned earlier in this thread. Recently though I have been in love with FTPRush, which hasn't been mentioned yet. FTPRush was based off of UltraFXP which was I think was based off of FlashFXP but with tab support.
sven30 06-08-2009, 07:10 PM Haven't seen much say FireFTP for FireFox. I love it
Probably the best FREE ftp client ever. I use it for all of my windows clients cuz dreamweaver doesn't play well with them for some reason. Also, it's great to refer to your clients (both mac and PC!!!) who don't have much money, and it's integrated into their browser already so they don't have to go to some random site and download it somewhere on their system where they'll likely forget where it is.
Here's my company's list:
http://www.allwebnow.com/pages/help/faq/hosting/siteedit/ftp.htm
jdbravo 06-10-2009, 06:20 PM I really like FileZilla, and its free!
t3od0r 06-16-2009, 05:09 AM i use CuteFTP 8, i used smartftp but i didn't like so i found this great product :D
nitrousoxide 08-27-2009, 07:13 PM I'm very surprised FTPRush (http://www.ftprush.com) only received 1 mention so far in this thread. It's a supremely capable and powerful ftp client, also the interface is completely configurable.
PogiWeb 08-27-2009, 07:23 PM I've been using FireFtp for about 2 years now. Its a great free addon if you use FireFox.
Moxie Maxwell 08-27-2009, 07:25 PM File Zilla for Windows servers, and for cPanel, I just use the built in file manager.
powderburned 08-27-2009, 07:48 PM I know that this doesn't answer the original question but I use FireFTP almost exclusively. You can have multiple sessions open in Firefox - therefore you can move files on multiple servers at once, and it is just dead simple and free. It handles both FTP and SFTP.
It doesn't have an editor, but I have other tools for that -- for what it's worth.
Been using WS_FTP pro since 1998. Works well, no issues, so no need to switch. Also use the built in FTP in Dreamweaver.
xpservices 08-28-2009, 05:58 AM Filezilla here - its getting better and better.
GarrettReardon 08-28-2009, 06:09 AM I use CuteFTP PRO on my Windows PC's and Cyberduck on my iMac.
XFactorServers 08-28-2009, 06:22 AM SmartFTP full version. Love the tabs.
inspiron 08-28-2009, 11:45 AM I personally love the filezilla ftp client and find its great.
lilrichieh 08-28-2009, 02:32 PM Mac user here i use Transmit
DesignBear 08-28-2009, 02:57 PM Filezilla :)
assistanz247 08-31-2009, 01:59 PM Filezilla Current version really rocks with new features.
TonySoprano 09-01-2009, 09:26 AM I use Tottal Commander for smaller tasks and FileZilla for bigger jobs since it has really good speed limit options for both upload and download...
Gary4gar 09-01-2009, 09:39 AM filezilla as its fast, secure and free of adware. plus its OpenSource as well
TonySoprano 09-01-2009, 09:50 AM filezilla as its fast, secure and free of adware. plus its OpenSource as well
Well, not very secure since stored passwords are not encrypted
like on most of other ftp applications, so it doesn't make it any more safer than others.
There are some Trojans/password stealers that can get all your ftp passwords very easily (and add iframe at your sites... happened to me before).
Here are some links about those iframe stealers:
http://soyouwillfindit.blogspot.com/2009/08/virus-steals-ftp-passwords-and-insert.html
http://blog.tigertech.net/posts/ftp-password-viruses/
How to avoid getting your passwords stolen:
1. don't save your passwords in FileZilla (or in any other FTP application that doesn't have master password... Total Commander will have this in new version 7.5 that should be out soon)
2. use FileZilla portable so Trojans can't find the installation (or even better use it from USB flash drive)
SWDevil 09-01-2009, 10:04 AM Wow... actually surprised to see that no one has mentioned FTP Voyager so far.
I personally prefer 1)FTP Voyager & 2)FlashFXP.. I think I would be in little trouble without them.
HostiaWeb 09-01-2009, 10:58 AM FlashFXP all the way for me.
Adrian Andreias 09-01-2009, 12:37 PM FTP client from Total Commander.
If I were to use Windows Explorer instead of Total Commander I'd probably be 3-4 times less productive in my day to day tasks :D.
TonySoprano 09-01-2009, 01:19 PM FTP client from Total Commander.
If I were to use Windows Explorer instead of Total Commander I'd probably be 3-4 times less productive in my day to day tasks :D.
couldn't agree more...
it's just like using IE when you have FireFox, Chrome or Opera available...
IE 8 needs 5 seconds just to open a new blank tab...
syngadget 09-01-2009, 02:30 PM I have tested many FTP programs for personal use, and have found that FlashFXP is the best by far. I love the interface, and the edit feature works perfectly, as long as you don't time out from the server. I have been using FlashFXP for three years now.
ramnet 09-01-2009, 02:49 PM Windows: WinSCP - it is very good, but not as good as...
Linux: ftpfs and sshfs - mount a remote filesystem locally - very good - fuse is awesome! :)
Gary4gar 09-01-2009, 10:16 PM Well, not very secure since stored passwords are not encrypted
like on most of other ftp applications, so it doesn't make it any more safer than others.

Using Arch linux, so no threat of Trojans here:P
CubicH-Gray 09-01-2009, 10:34 PM CyberDuck. Simply awesome. I prefer its UI to FileZilla.
Shaun Olsen 09-01-2009, 11:37 PM Have been using Filezilla for the last few years, prior to that I used to use FlashFXP and even more prior to that used to use LeapFTP.
Hosting24 09-02-2009, 04:01 AM I use CuteFTP Pro on my desktop PC and notebook. However, we recommend using FileZilla for our customers because this FTP client is free, fast and works perfectly. I also have FileZilla installed on my office computer so I can help customers step-by-step if they experience any issues up-loading/downloading files, etc.
I have also used SmartFTP in the past but it had too many bugs transferring big files.
Kohrar 09-02-2009, 06:42 AM I have also used SmartFTP in the past but it had too many bugs transferring big files.
Not to mention that it doesn't have sftp support. That's the show stopper for me ;)
Hosting24 09-02-2009, 07:04 AM Really? I didn't miss SFTP support because I was using this client for several days only... It looks good first and goes worse and worse as soon as you start using it.
OwlsHosting 09-02-2009, 09:43 AM WS_FTP Pro - the simplest and most effective I've found
mrcjdawson 09-02-2009, 10:47 AM Cyberduck. I just picked up the beta version that came out to address Snow Leopard compatibility issues with previous releases. Cyberduck is excellent!
mooseweb 09-02-2009, 11:03 AM SmartFTP all the way :)
By far the best one I've ever used, and I've tried well over 50 FTP clients before, they keep it updated and constantly add new stuff.
Bad part, costs $34.95 a year
indoc0der 09-03-2009, 12:35 AM i'm use FireFTP, addons for Firefox. For me, its better than FileZilla.
easygameservers 09-03-2009, 01:23 AM +1 for FileZilla. Does everything I could ever need for FTP.
woutervz 09-05-2009, 08:52 AM I prefer Filezilla. it's free :)
alex-developer 09-05-2009, 01:55 PM The best one is SSH file manager is WinSCP, as for FTP client is Filezilla
