View Full Version : Namecheap - Good or Bad?
Hello
I am planning on getting a domain. I've heard that you should get it from someone that specializes in domains and not a combination site of hosting and domains. So I have decided to probably go with Namecheap. What do you guys think of them? I've heard great things about them in this forum, as many people seem to be happy customers of them. But, to me, it seems to be to good to be true. Some bad aspects about them could maybe even reassure me.
Are there anything in general one should look for before buying a domain name?
I also wonder whether domain names need some sort of maintaining/controlling? Isn't just a name that you have there and that's it?
MikeDVB 03-30-2009, 06:02 PM NameCheap is a fantastic Domain Registrar - I have no issue at all recommending them.
If you use your hosting provider's nameservers there's not really anything you need to do beyond the initial configuration unless you decide to change hosts.

I love namecheap, nothing but good service with them so far.
scott1995 03-30-2009, 06:54 PM I've had good experiences with namecheap, have over 11 domains with them. A lot better than godaddy and other ones I've used :D
njoker555 03-30-2009, 07:21 PM I have like a dozen or so domains with namecheap - highly recommended - although I have a lot more domains with GoDaddy lol - these are my top two registrars, I transfer domains back and forth depending on what specials they have at the time of renewal lol- cheap but fun
Konrad4 03-30-2009, 07:25 PM Namecheap is great, and I usually use it, although godaddy is alright too and a little bit cheaper. I like the namecheap control panel, it is very easy to use.
HostXV 03-30-2009, 07:34 PM NameCheap is a good registrar. I have over 50+ domains with them. :)
hippy4president 03-30-2009, 07:47 PM Godaddy who? I use namecheap!
WebCave 03-30-2009, 08:02 PM Namecheap is by far the best i switched my two domains one from godaddy and the other from dotster and namecheap is by far the best :) ive also used other company and namecheap surpasses them all :D great company i had a problem setting up a SSL cert support quickly contacted me back it took them 20minutes to respond! very good service :)
ldcdc 03-30-2009, 08:32 PM What do you guys think of them? So far, in some 5 years, I've encountered no issues with their domain registering service. I don't have many domains though, 6 or so.
NeoGen 03-30-2009, 09:58 PM Fantastic registrar, I have ~30 domains with them.. never faced any issue with them. There control panel is far far better than godaddy or logicbox control panel.
However, they are bit expensive than godaddy(after coupons), also at times it is difficult to find renewal coupon :D
Matt - Kerplunc 03-30-2009, 10:54 PM Fantastic domain registrar! I've had an amazing experience with them
patord 03-31-2009, 12:17 AM For a while I was hesitant to use them. But after 5+ years, I have no major complaints. I can actually heartily recommend them even with the minor hiccups I run in to...
namely (pun intended) never do anything critical slightly before/after a scheduled major maintenance period. I've had too many weird interface or cart problems during those times. Naturally that stuff gets sorted out, just don't be that person stuck there.
Overall my experience with NC is positive. I can say this as I've used NetSol for domains for nearly 10 years, and still have a few domains with them just so my group can re-live the pain of the how things were in the early days. I also had to deal with having domains with the RegisterFly implosion a while back.
Respite 03-31-2009, 01:05 AM i use them though i must say there prices seem to keep going up and up so be wary

Why would you need a control panel? What is it to control?
target 03-31-2009, 02:55 AM Another vote for namecheap.
pclover 03-31-2009, 06:19 AM vote for namecheap here to. I am really happy with them.
I looked at their Registration Agreement. I am pretty sure it is some sort of ToS for registering domains. Just too long. How big of a chance is there that I will miss something really important and how closely should one really read it (a lot of technical terms in it)?
Namecheap 'lost' one of my domain names. The domain is still in my Namecheap panel (stating that the expirary is June), however if you do a WHOIS on it it is with another registrar and registrant.
They said: "the domain was not transfered, but expired without being renewed", however I had paid for 2 years registration and the expirary wasnt due for another 6 months. Their registration agreement states that they're not responsible for loss:
YOU AGREE THAT WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY (1) SUSPENSION OR LOSS OF THE SERVICE(S), INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION SERVICES
Now I use Moniker instead of Namecheap, its a little more expensive but you get what you pay for.
xenex 03-31-2009, 11:15 AM I have always used Namecheap and there new live chat support option is great.
sean
alex-developer 03-31-2009, 02:39 PM Namecheap is awesome & support is great.
sherwood 03-31-2009, 02:51 PM me personally hates them.
they are so annoying to use. godaddy on the other hand are just so easy to use and do everything with.
SenseiSteve 03-31-2009, 03:47 PM You shouldn't go wrong with Namecheap. GoDaddy is too cluttered for me.
Inchboy 03-31-2009, 04:17 PM I have just registered my domain with godaddy. I was going to register with namecheap, but when i found that they are resellers of enom, i changed my mind.
colbyt 03-31-2009, 06:48 PM Namecheap, godaddy, domainsite, name; I consider them all equal and good. Never had any problems with any of those.
gavo2o 03-31-2009, 09:07 PM I am with Namecheap and have not had a problem with them.
ChrisEatsAlot 03-31-2009, 09:22 PM I have used them without problem... :)
target 04-01-2009, 03:20 AM I have just registered my domain with godaddy. I was going to register with namecheap, but when i found that they are resellers of enom, i changed my mind.
They were but not anymore. They are now ICANN registrar.
Jonathan J 04-01-2009, 03:38 AM I love namecheap. The only real problem I had, was when a domain went "missing" in my user control panel. Luckily they had live support the guy on the live support managed to get my domain back for me. *It was quite a scary moment to find my domain missing* :p
i use them though i must say there prices seem to keep going up and up so be waryIts not NC's price keep going up but ICANN & the registries' prices going up instead...
Why would you need a control panel? What is it to control? To control the domain?
I have just registered my domain with godaddy. I was going to register with namecheap, but when i found that they are resellers of enom, i changed my mind. They are an accredited registrar of ICANN now.
Jordanlw 04-01-2009, 04:50 AM The only reason I chose namecheap over Godaddy is due to their easy control panel, Unlike Godaddy it isn't cluttered and separated. They also provide free DNS services & WHOIS privacy.
BristolSue 04-01-2009, 10:25 AM They are an accredited registrar of ICANN now.
But all the domains you register are still with enom. Check it for yourself. They may be an ICANN registrar, but they are still resellers under enom.

jon-f 04-01-2009, 02:08 PM Namecheap is awesome. I'm a die hard namecheap client. I have over 100+ domains with them. I would not buy a domain nowhere else. You simply cannot beat the speed and reliability of namecheap. For example you are setting up a server, you need to get an ns domain. You go to namecheap - add funds, buy the domain, register ns and set ns. All within 5 minutes. Their pages load fast, they don't add 10 other things to your list at checkout like other places do. I just really like namecheap.
As far as web hosting, I'm not sure on that but my positive experience as a domain customer and the few times Ive used their support I would assume they run a top notch operation over there for web hosting.
imcool 04-01-2009, 04:50 PM ok but what about dyanot.com
veeblox 04-01-2009, 05:56 PM NameCheap ehh?
to be honest mate there brilliant, never had any problems with them... sites easy to use my 4 year old son could use it :L
target 04-02-2009, 03:24 AM ok but what about dyanot.com
Doesn't work ?
jon-f 04-02-2009, 10:24 AM Well they are an enom reseller. And now they are suspending domains for free speech issues it looks like. I just got this complaint from a client. If someone can send such a simple complaint and get someones domain suspended then Im starting to not feel so comfortable there.
The client's domain was suspended immediately btw

enetwork 04-02-2009, 11:02 AM Felosi,
We just forwarded you the complaint and no action was taken as you can see if you read the email clearly. We don't simply shut down dns because of a complaint and without investigation, period. Your site is also resolving fine.
Either way, you can switch to our "primary" nameservers which we control if you prefer not use enom's as your domain is still gradfathered with those old nameservers.
jon-f 04-02-2009, 12:38 PM I will post the same thing I replied in PM as its relevant here too
Hi, thats not my domain. I had reccomended to that client a while back to use namecheap for domains- that free speech would be supported. And basically they confronted me this morning a lil mad cause I reccomended it and their domain got suspended for a free speech issue
I will ask the mods to edit the post, Sorry about that, howver I do think that anytime a domain registrar starts suspending domains over free speech issues whether they are offensive or not - then other things are quick to follow.
I myself do not like that clients site but no one forces me to look at it. I support free speech unquestionably because I see it disintegrating on the net every day and someone has to take a stand.
KmacK 04-02-2009, 01:12 PM +1 for namecheap. I recently gave them a try after using godaddy for years. I like there control panel much better than godaddy.
enetwork 04-02-2009, 02:15 PM Felosi,
Once again, their domain was not suspended. An email regarding the complaint was simply forwarded to them which is standard procedure. Now wether they mis-construed that as something else, I have no idea.
Please show me where it states that the domain was disabled in the correspondence you posted from us. And the only thing I asked you via PM was to consider editing the domain shown in the correspondence you posted out of respect to to people here and your client.
Quite honestly, I don't agree at all with what's there and I do not think many here would find it appropriate either. That being said, my personal thoughts and opinions NEVER affect our neutrality as a registrar(as long as it is legal). If anything, we would ask you to take your business elsewhere and pay for the transfer but we wouldn't just shut down your domain for something like this.
enetwork 04-02-2009, 02:41 PM Felosi,
I also want to clarify when I say "you" in "we would ask you to take your business elsewhere" I am making a generalization and not refering to you personally.
Superbstriker 04-04-2009, 02:39 PM i have had good experiences with them would definitely recommend them.
adrianc23 04-04-2009, 03:49 PM I had two domains on NameCheap a year ago, I had a positive experience.
iWF-Jacob 04-04-2009, 04:31 PM I have about 30 domains registered with namecheap, I bought them all when they had the free SSL certificate promo. They are a good registrar and have pretty quick ticket response times!
John West 04-04-2009, 04:42 PM I have serveral domains threw Namecheap and i have had a great experience with them i would definitely recommend you to try them out.
jon-f 04-04-2009, 05:45 PM I want to publicly apologize to enetwork and namecheap for my above replies. It was inappropriate and should have been handled in private. I let my frustration get the best of me.
The issue was resolved. They said the domain was never suspended so the client must have been mistaken or exaggerating as I did not check it when they contacted me about that.
Namecheap is great and I will continue to do business with them, I am going to make it priority to go over their terms of service to better know what kind of domains is kosher or not.
darkfyre 04-04-2009, 07:26 PM I personally have over 40 domains registered with namecheap. I love them.
PC Gatek 04-09-2009, 01:08 AM I am concerning about cheap registrar.
Where the database stored at registrar's server or at internic?
ldroom 04-09-2009, 05:01 AM I use namecheap.com for years and Iam happy with them. I regged more then 100+ domains without any troubles.
AstroNyu 04-09-2009, 05:24 AM What makes me liking NC is that they bundled private registration and ssl for free. Their downside is that their renewal code are ONLY for customers with 50+ domains with them.
I like their control panel the most, faster, wayyy faster than whodaddy.

Renewal code ONLY for customers? That can't mean that if you only have one domain name you can't renew it, right?

Well that is what I've been told by their support staff. Reason why people favors Godaddy are because they have a lot of coupons thus allowing people to save a lot whenever they regged a new domain, renewed or transferred. While at namecheap, although you saved when you regged with them, there are NO coupons available for you to renew your domain UNLESS you have 50 or more domains with them.
On a short term, NC is cheaper but if you want to stick longer and having <50 domains, stay with godaddy.
*this is comparison between GD and NC only. Not including other registrars.
Kayleigh 04-09-2009, 10:45 AM NameCheap is excelent.
007Enterprises 04-09-2009, 12:40 PM I've gone through about 12 registrars. The worst 1and1.com, godaddy.com,domaincentral.com and so many others.
I went from namecheap.com elsewere (don't remember to which registrar/thief and for what reason -will check my notes eventually)
I'm transfering my URLs from enom.com to namecheap presently. I have 30 URLs with namecheap presently.
They look A O.K. (up 'til now).

But you can still renew your domain name, right? Even if you only have 1? Stupid question but I just didn't get you there on the first one.
webtouchup 04-09-2009, 01:02 PM I too have several domains with NameCheap.com very happy with the service!

I have ~100 domains spread across including namecheap. Just because of this reason I have started moving all my domains away from namecheap.
Otherwise they are pretty excellent registrar..
dev_stefan 04-10-2009, 09:44 AM bought 3 domains, 1 rapidSSL certificate never had any problems. Support replies all is good!
Crusader99 06-28-2010, 01:14 PM The unencrypted login form of Namecheap is a joke: http://www.namecheap.com/myaccount/login.aspx?&mode=normal
If you use the above form, your username and password will be sent to Namecheap unencrypted. If you use a public wifi connection, it is very easy to capture your password and steal all your domains LOL.
Of course you have the option to use the SSL login. But offering the unsecure login form for technically unsavvy customers is ridiculous. It is like playing with a knife.
By the way, the unsecure login form was the default on the home page in the past. But I contacted them, and after a little persuasion they replaced the unsecure login form with the SSL login form! But they have used the default unsecure login form on the home page for years. You can check this on Archive.org: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.namecheap.com
Question: how much does Namecheap care about security, if they don't even encrypted the login form?
LastQuark 06-29-2010, 04:08 AM Namecheap.com is a VERY good registrar. I use them for my free dynamic DNS. It works better than everything else I have tried.
If not for their $9.99 domain name registration, and I have a lot of domains, I will move my domains there.
Abidh 06-29-2010, 05:31 AM I've got around 3 domains with them. They are fair with their pricing (I know Godaddy gives more cheaper, but I need a decent control panel and not a crowded one!).
