View Full Version : Server Names
Ratty 10-28-2002, 02:03 PM Through out my years of dealing with multi server enviroments one of the harder tasks has always been choosing a good name, ie <servername>.yourdomain.com.
When I was at university it we started with Planets (mars, saturn etc) and then when they ran out moved to native american tribe names (cherokee, souix etc). My first job after uni we used liquers (bourbon, tanquary etc). As I move on in my career and move into larger corporate eviroments the names have become more boring (app-dev, prod1 etc).
Now that I am starting to build out the number of my own personal servers I am having to choose names again but unfortunatly I'm not having much creative luck, and the best my wife can offer is the names of seaseme street characters (elmo, bigbird etc).
What does everyone else call their servers?
JeremyV 10-28-2002, 02:04 PM I call mine "zen" :agree:
KualoJo 10-28-2002, 02:08 PM We name ours after shakespearean plays...

I like the idea of naming them after great musical legends, hendrix, marley etc. ;)

Or body parts
arm
leg
head
nose
pit
LOL
Make it short is all I can say.
alchiba 10-28-2002, 04:06 PM Names of Shakespeare characters. Plenty of those and for the most part don't lend themselves to many spelling errors. I especially like the obscure ones, but I think I'll avoid Bigot.
bearone 10-28-2002, 04:17 PM pick your favorite sci fi series or book and go with the names in it.
Andyc 10-28-2002, 04:19 PM We use Simpsons character names as well...
Acronym BOY 10-28-2002, 05:54 PM Geek alphabet.
Or try binary labeling:
0000.domain.com
0001.domain.com
0010.domain.com
0011.domain.com
0100.domain.com
0101.domain.com
etc...
Or if you have more than 16 servers:
00000000.domain.com
00000001.domain.com
00000010.domain.com
etc...
But thats only 256 servers, if you have more than that, try hexidecimal. :)
