What is the difference? I have 5 web sites and wonder if it might be better for me open a reseller account or a virtual account with domain pointers?

You could either look for an account specifically targeted at resellers, a bulk (unlimited domain) account or a Multiple Domain Account. A Multiple Domain Account would allow you to host all your 5 sites without the need to run up costs by adding support for "Unlimited Domains" when you don't need it :)

Almost all hosting now is virtual hosting. All virtual hosting means is you don't have a static ip address for every site you host. You might be thinking of a Virtual Private Server... which is a different thing alltogether.

Reseller accounts generally give you a block of space on a server, for example 1 GB space and 20 GB data transfer... for about $25-$35/month. They are great if you are a designer hosting clients' sites, are just getting into hosting, or just have multiple sites. Some companies are listed below:

VPS's are fairly new. They are blocks of space on a server as well, but they also separate CPU and memory usage so if one person has a spammer or script run ary, the other accounts will not be affected. They are typically much more expensive than reseller accounts, but less expensive than a managed dedicated server.

In relation to what CDHost has mentioned...

A reseller account is very useful for someone who needs to aggregate multiple clients/domains under one ISP/Host to reduce cost and thats about it.

A Virtual Private Server account is very useful when you want the power and flexibility of a dedicated server to host multiple clients/domains without the high cost associated with dedicated servers. You are also not restricted to the software installed and usually can install any extra software and any custom configuration changes you would like.

That's not quite true.

I have been offering Virtual Dedicated Servers commercially for more than 2 years now. iServer (now Verio) has been doing the same (on different technology) since 1997.
