View Full Version : Verio Dedicated Servers?

Hello. I am going to purchase a dedicated server but I do not know how good Verio is? Has anyone had any experience with their service and uptime? The server will be for a hosting company to resell space, and will probably require someone to look over it to make sure all is ok.

If Verio is the wrong place for buying a dedicated server, where should I look? Any opinions?

Check out Burst.net, good for dedicated services. I use them on my website lexton.net, and i have had no problems, except with the VDI downtime.

You might want to post this in the dedicated server forum

Before you consider Burst, I'd do a search on them here. They have a mixed record at best.

As for Verio, you can probably do better. I had a virtual server with a Verio host, and had all sorts of intermittent problems with their network.

And I thought a big company like Verio would be decent!

PCMagazine did a review of Verio last October. http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,2635776,00.html They weren't too impressed. Users commented at http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,2636355,00.html Most trashed Interland, Verio and Dellhost.

If you need someone to look over it an make sure it is ok i suggest go with Rackspace Limited (www.rackspace.com)

I have 2 systems with them and their support is really very very good . I doubt if anyone else can give better managed services better then R.S . Their network is also good and i have had near 100% uptime for past 8 months.
They are slightly pricey thought. But worth it.

Hi There,

Verio dedicated solutions used to be own by DigitalNation (dn.net), they were taken over several months back. Try asking about DigitalNation, I'm think you're going to find it very hard to find any negative feedback about them. Since the takeover I admit support/customer services seem to be a bit screwed up (what happened to one account manager who handled everything???), perfect connection all the time though - reliable, very fast and doesnt fluctulate at peak times I think I've add about 100% uptime over the past year, fast support - reboot always within 10 mins, 24/7 someone in the noc. They've also invested heavily in the data center that hosts the dedicated server. I can not speak for their virtual hosting operations however I'm guessing thats handled by different tech people and probably a different data center.

Matt.

Hi dherman,

We're currently hosted on Verio dedicated servers (18months). Our original contract was with Digital Nation prior to them being taken over by Verio (as Matt said)

Since the merger, we've seen a steady decline in the quality of the service and support they are providing. DN was an excellent company, unfortunately most of its management left shortly after the takeover.....

We're currently negotiating a move from Verio, so that might answer your question in a roundabout way :-)

Seems that is the case in any business. THere is a great company, and then it gets baught by someone else. Then all turns to crap. Sad but it happends everyday.

We had a similar situation with Verio New England (the former Pioneer Global).

We had obtained a /20 from Pioneer Global years ago, we were their first customer, and we were given those IP's with the understanding that they were ours for as long as we required them, and that we would not be asked to renumber. Then along came Verio...

About a year ago, they decided to tidy up things on their end and do a bit of renumbering, so they informed us they needed the /20 back from us in a few months, or they'd consider us in breach of our contract with them and stop routing our addresses.

We didn't have the manpower, or the funds required to bring in a team of network admins to handle the renumbering (on our networks as well as a number of customer networks that we had given blocks of addresses to, and who expected that we would eat the cost of renumbering them), but we called in a few favors to get some extra bodies and got the renumbering completed in time. We didn't use the new /20 they provided us with, but got our own /20 direct from ARIN that we now qualified for.

It nearly put us out of business, and there was no reason for them to do it, other than to get rid of a competitor who was also a customer.

Needless to say, when our transit contract expired a couple of months later, we switched to Digex (formerly Intermedia), who I highly recommend if you are looking for Internet transit.

I used to be with iServer, a Verio company. I have had a virtual server i Germany and a server in the US. My experience is that the support is absolutely outstanding. Always answers within 2-3 hours by a technically knowledgeable support person. Never any network or server problems. But, you always get what you pay for. Dedicated servers at iServer starts at $1.400, but they are playing in another league than VDI based hosts et. al.

I have been with Verio for over 2 years and still have servers with them. I don't plan on leaving them, even though I am getting another "spare" server at rackshack

Their support is the best I've seen in ANY business. always exceeding my expectations. Almost 100% uptime. Maybe only 2 times this year they've had some network outages that had been fixed in less than an hour.

The longest outage I can remember with them was for 3 hours last year.

Another tip I can give you is to negotiate hard before getting server from them. I recently got a new server and got the price of under $750/month for a server that originally was supposed to cost over $1100/month and they waived setup fee. (DUAL p3, 2Gig RAM, 2 SCSI HDs)

If you are a newbie, then go with Verio dedicated, they will not let you down and will be helping you every step of the way. When the server is released to you it will be fully setup with the software you want and ready to go.

One year and 5 months later, I'm sure he's either gotten or not gotten a server there by now.

I have a virtual server on Verio for over 3 years and I've been very happy with the level of service and network speed. Their tech support is amazingly fast and knowledgeable. I use it to host my business web site and I can't afford to move it elsewhere (even to my own dedicated server).
