It's certainly an interesting new look. I'll need some time to get used to it.

IMHO, too much grey...

To make the new GUI of this site be a little easier on our eyes make the black border that's inside of ever table cell a dark gray, not black, just something darker than #cccccc will work excellent and will go better with the overall color scheme, try it you won't be disappointed.

To be fair - I hadnt even finished the design - I only found out the forums had been upgraded about 15 minutes ago when Carlos buzzed me on ICQ

Thats why things are missing (:D) and I had no intention of keeping the lines black - I was actually going to get rid of them full stop - but if you suggest dark grey - then I shall do that

The beta site btw is http://www.webhostlink.com/beta/

<< edit >>
Go to http://www.webhostlink.com/beta/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4 and you'll see Ive made an improvement or two - Any comments?

I'm guessing that the work was in upgrading the forum to the latest beta version of vbulletin, making sure it worked, and that the estetic considerations were put off to last and not completed as yet. I hope not as I don't care for the dismal gray color scheme either.

FWIW, I prefer the blue color scheme. Incidentally, where did the "show all posts since I last logged in" option go?

Duster

The time shown is fast by several hours. I checked to make sure my own settings were still set on Eastern time (they are). The time shown is over 4 hours ahead.

Addendum: I checked after a recent post I made. It is 5 hours ahead.

very nice. All designers like grey... I like the clean look about it too. Never a fan of sitepoint's heavily compressed images.

and is it me, or is this thing loading like greased lightning...

The new board is loading super-fast. Much better compared to the previous version. I would like to see a bit of color though. More of a contrast between the blue and the grey. It's a very clean, professional look. Very well done! :D

I like the grey look as well, but I have spent a number of years developing Windows software - so may tastes have probably been corrupted. :cartman:

This new version of vBullitin seams to work nicely and I like the new features!

I don't find it that much different, but probably a little cleaner and better anyway. However, the one problem I have, on Netscape anyway, is the same with the old forum. You see, with the old forum, the Vlink was blue-ish, as well the background with images turned on. I just surf with my images off and I can see what links/threads I have clicked on, so I don't have to guess. Now, with the new color's, with or without my images on, I can't see anything to indicate what links I've clicked on and I don't want to have to have Netscape override it. I don't know if this same problem exists in IE or not, but IE just doesn't feel right to me.

I would like to see a rule that no company names and logos may be used as avatars. It seems to defeat what I perceive as the purpose of avatars, to personalize the identity of the individual. A company logo says only the equivalent of billboard advertising to me.

There is a feature in the options:
Style Set:
You make pick a style set to browse with that may or may not override the default settings.

that may allow each of us to choose the style of the board we wish to view it in. I've seen phpnuke and other sites with color/theme options so perhaps that's what this feature does.

Even if the color scheme of the board is changed (and I hope it is), I hope new ones will be added and this feature enabled.

I vote for the old colors.

I like the new features though.

Just noticed something... it looks like the IP#s are messed up... that last post doesn't have my correct IP, and some of the IPs on this page are missing altogether.

Well I like it, I told Matt when he did that, I think the images are a nice new look to the forums. Nick, Matt wanted me to tell you, you get 99% credit for the upgrade.

Couple of things :

1. Thanks to Nicholas Brown for upgrading the forum. I do believe a certain music CD could be going his way very soon ;)

2. Duster, re : avatars : totally agreed. We will be discussing this at a later date.

3. Colour theme : personally I'm not a grey person, but I'm getting used to it.

4. vB 2.0 loading with gZip compression and the new templates is a speed demon. It is absolutely superb ;)

5. IP #s not showing up is a known vB problem (I believe) and I'll have a look at the vB forums over the next few days to see if this is the case.

To the missing IP peoples : are you accessing the forums through proxies?

OK...... I know for a fact now that all the IPs are out of wack, and it may not necessarily be a vB problem as SitePoint hasn't had IP problems yet. I might get Matt to check the DB.

IP Address Logging

BC - Im going to see if I can recreate this on the beta board (http://www.webhostlink.com/beta/). It would help if the people with missing IP's went over there and posted a thing or two - the database could be corrupted or it could be a simple bug.

I'll ask the vB developers about it

<< Edit >>
Ive posted at their forums asking for help (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14151)

My ip address is one from my past ISP, thats cool with me, SPAM THE FORUM, they can not trace you.

TheComputerGuy

Ok at WMF we have the ip addy's logged, and they work fine, giving me my real ip address.

Also whenever I make a new post, the post turns grey like it is old, instead of red? whats up with that?

Nicholas Brown
04-15-2001, 08:06 AM
I think it has something to do with the cookies - I might ask Matt to post an announcement asking users to delete all their cookies - that should fix the hot/cold threads - but Im still awaiting an answer for the IP Address situation

I really like this new version of the forum. I think it looks nice and clean (I like grey). One little idea for the developers would be if they added so people could choose their own "themes", it's not that hard to add.
