View Full Version : Help Finding A Host

Hi, I posted this yesterday, but it obviously didn't get posted, maybe it was too long or something.

I read reviews of *****, I am glad that I did because I was going to sign-up with them. I have almost been screwed by Page Creators.net (who have now shut down btw) but I managed to cancel my account (and my credit card) before they took out any money. They sent me threatening e-mails but in the end realised that they wouldn't get anything from me.

Now, I was really excited by *****'s Unix special offer package - 2 Gb space, Unlimited bandwidth (20 Gb limit) per month. All this for just $20 a month if paid yearly plus one-off $50 start-up.

I now need to find a hosting company for a teen entertainment site that I am launching in the summer. (I am 16 years old btw).

These are my requirements and I would appreciate if you could direct me towards an (honest) hosting company.

- 300 Megs of space (is this enough for a busy UBB messageboard?)
- 10 Gigs of bandwidth per month - I don't know how popular the site is going to be yet, but I'm thinking of putting up (legal) mp3 downloads of about 2 Mb each. I don't want to get stuck with huge extra charges for bandwidth overages.
- CGI-Bin with sendmail installed
- No e-mail facilities required as I will be signing up with either BigMailbox.com or Everyone.net to offer visitors free webmail accounts and they take care of all the bandwidth and storage for e-mails.
- PHP 3 or 4
-MySQL
- Web Based control panel (not essential)
- Web based stats (not essential)
- 5 or more subdomains included in the price (not essential)
- I don't need domain registration included as I already own the domain I'm going to use so I just need to be able to transfer (or point it to host DNS) the domain. I would prefer to just point the domain at the host's DNS instead of actually handing it over to them as my registrar gives me excellent technical support.

Now, the final requirement is a bit harder to find at a good price. I need a java chatroom with moderator facilities. ***** is offering Volano Chat Pro ($600 value) as part of their special package.

If the host you recommend does not offer chatroom software, do they allow customers to buy a license themselves and run background programs?

Do you know of any good chatroom software apart from Volano (http://www.volano.com) and Webmaster Inc IRC Java Chat (http://www.webmaster.com/)

I am willing to pay up to $28 per month on a month-to-month basis or quaterly (if the host is highly recommended and reliable) Plus I am willing to pay up to $70 for one-off setup costs.

Thanks in advance for your help

If I were you I would have a look at
http://www.tera-byte.com

They are highly recommended..low cost for big plans..they also would be able to put you in a dedicated server if you outgrew your shared hosting account.

Im not sure because I dont frequent here as much as I used to...but overall I think tera-byte is still pretty highly recommended.
As far as Telaserv.net?
I know the owner, and he offers a great service and support, just as great....if ya sign up there..tell him
Martie sent ya :)
No, I dont work for him, in fact we are "friendly competitors"

Thanx

This seems to be the best board on the net to get quick advise on.

Still looking for a good host with java chatroom or a cheap java chatroom license.

Omar,
maybe this might make things easier for you:
http://www.jpilot.com/
it's a java chat client you'll be able to plug into your site. Using that might free you up to select from a wider range of hosts...

Tera-byte is definately a good host with great support. But one thing is that if your UBB get too busy & large, you might slow the server down considerably. As for you, 10GB is definately not enough if you are putting up MP3 for download. If you dont think of storing all your UBB messages, i mean pruning it now & then, 100-150 MB should be more than enough.

Thanx again...I am considering Tera-Byte or Telaserv

The JPilot java chat is ok, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. But thanx for the suggestion.

I recommend Worldzone Pro, with the Quad Upgrade Pack. 480 MB space, 16 GB bandwidth and 5 subdomains for $144 yearly. It comes with the CPanel control panel, and Wusage stats.

Atlantis - The Upgrade page is offline just now, I thin they're moving to a new data center.

Could someone tell me if WorldZOnePro are reliable?

Thanx

I can affirm this about WorldZone. I know one of the owners personally and he's one of those people that stay up all night with no sleep, to make sure things run smoothly and does what he can to ensure that. They are still getting situated there, but they really do offer those features for those prices, and they are reliable with a good uptime record.

Has anyone had any problems with billing or not getting the stated amount of space/bandwidth?

If not then this looks like the host for me :-)

Does anyone know when WorldZone Pro will be back up?

What are your experiences with them as a host?

Thanx

I heard some bad things about worldzone pro over freewebspace.net 's forum.

But I still see a lot of people recommending them.

Take your chance. :)

I'm with tera-byte and have been since early last year. I first joined when there network was like a rock. I've seen it slow down but it's now getting faster again.

The technical support is just as good as it always was. They answer emails fast and deal with the problems and dont leave you hanging around for days.

You've heard three things, and all have been discussed there. Meow claimed they were down on Sunday, but they weren't. Jiminsd claimed they were "up, down, up, down" (i.e. unreliable) - Again, its not true. There has only been 26 minutes of downtime on Saturday, and that was the fault of the data center Worldzone is located at. Giancarlo claimed that a certain other host was faster than Worldzone (note: He never said that Worldzone was slow, he just said the other host was faster). Fair enough, but he was comparing the speed of the old Worldzone. With the move of Worldzone to a new data center (and better servers), it will be even faster than before.

So, what is 'bad' about that ? :)

So the WorldZone Pro Account is good then?

Wouldn't the discussion at freewebspace.net be about their WorldZone account (the free hosting option)?

What do Tera-Byte offer that World Zone Pro doesn't?

I need more web space more than bandwidth, World Zone Pro offers 480 MB, for a lower price than Tera-Byte's package. But I won't be using more than 16 Gb of bandwidth, will I?

I have used barely 80 Mb of bandwidth on my free host for 6000 pageviews on my messageboard.
But obviously when I launch the actual site, I will be expecting about 10,000 pageviews a day if not more.

Does Tera-Byte provide free sub-domains?

Will either tera-Byte or WorldZonepro let me install and run Volano chat server on the shared hosting accounts?

Thanx again for all your help

The possible problem here, is this; You're asking about opinions and comments about a company from people, which is fine... However, you're now directly asking what this company can or will provide. That's a problem, because only the company in question can really answer these questions -- which I'm sure they will, provided you ask them -- but if they post here, they might break the forum rules, as it can be seen as promoting themselves. So, the best way you can get an answer -- and since only the company in question is in a position to answer them anyway -- you'd be better off asking the company in question directly.

Since you can get faster and direct answers, from the company, instead of hoping people that don't work for the company will know... as people likely don't, unless it's stated on the company's site or they've had the same option installed or allowed. So, email them and inquire, I'm sure you'll get the answers you seek and be satisfied. Cheers! :-)

Thanx Tim, that is very true.

Ok here's something that people on this board can answer for me...

Which company is more reliable?

As u can see by my first post in this thread, I have had bad experiences with hosting companies.

Thanx again

It's now April 20th, and the WorldZonePro servers are still not up...is this what I can expect from the service if I sign-up to them?

Is Tera-Byte any better?
