View Full Version : Cpanel FreeBSD Best Price?
Vortech 04-11-2001, 11:13 PM OK first will Cpanel run on FreeBSD. If so what reseller has the best price. Please e-mail your best price per month for Cpanle installed and not installed we may be able to do it if not hard.
E-Mail: info@vortechhosting.com
To start this off we have heard $200 a month if you can beat that send us a e-mail that just seems high per month to me.
Cpanel does not run on FreeBSD at this time. It currently works with RedHat 6.2 only
Vortech 04-11-2001, 11:22 PM Well i guess Plesk and FreeBSD it is then..LOL
Man i thought NT was hard to get a good control panel for. Linux is just as bad if not worse you have so many diff. ver. of you can't get the best of both. Where with windows there just is no good one and only one OS..LOL

No matter what version of Linux you speak of, a control panels can be coded to run justas well on one brand, as another. There's no reason why they shouldn't run on all of them, not all of them are built like Cpanel. For that matter, there's not many reasons why a control panel can't run on FreeBSD or Linux without any issues.
Vortech 04-12-2001, 08:32 AM Some one on this post http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=8308 said you were coming out with a control panel. Can you let me know about this and when it may be ready to go and if it will run FreeBSD.
jonglenn 04-12-2001, 10:13 AM Look into webmin also, since its free, modifiable, runs on FreeBSD.

Should be soon, and yes, it will with on *BSD systems, as well as Linux systems. I wouldn't bother to wait for Cpanel to come out on FreeBSD, since it's such poor quality. I'm not saying this as a promotion for software I am developing, but simply the fact about CPanel. Too much guess work has gone into it and it's not a product that should be running on live web servers, at all. I wouldn't put much faith or waiting time into having it being ported, when it so desperately needs inproving and restructuring... of course, you likely saw my arguments against it long ago and recently to know more of the details about that.
Look at Ensim's solution http://www.ensim.com it appears to be nice although only Red Hat at the moment (I think)

Tim, is there any demo/screen shots that we can see? I am definitely very excited/interested with your cpanel! Let's give Tim the moral support he needs :D
cheers,

Vortech 04-12-2001, 08:10 PM I did check out ensim.com but its Redhat would like to go with FreeBSD as every one seems to say the same thing it is more stable then RedHat and will run much faster then redhat.
I think i will go with Plesk / FreeBSD. Just will not be able to do resellers like Cpanel lets you do. :( But we can use Plesk on shared servers and can use it on dedicated as well so i think it will have to be the best.
Let me know how this sounds for FreeBSD Setups. We make all our servers the same so we can keep hardware in stock all the time.
Dual PIII 1000 Mhz
Raid 5 with Adaptec Raid Card.
5 73.4GB ULTRA160 LVD 10000rpm 5.6ms 160MB/Sec Data Transfer, Wide Ultra160 SCSI
Asus Mother Board CUV4X-D
2 Gigs of PC133 Ram
FreeBSD 4.X
Plesk Version 1.3.1 build010206.16
On a system like this how many users would be safe using Plesk and FreeBSD. I was going to say 500 to 1000 but not sure just wanted a 2nd opinion. :)
Thanks

That should handle the number of user's you are wondering about, just fine. However, as with anything, it depends greatly on what site's are running what. You can certainly limit each user's processes to a certain amount of resources (i.e., RAM, CPU, process duration, etc.) and that ought to give you the control and stability to host 1,000 users without any problems.
