We are getting ready to get in to Linux hosting. But would like to know what would be better FreeBSD 4.x or Redhat 6 or 7. We want to keep the same platform for all the servers. So we just wanted to see what OS would be the best for hosting.

Most stable with out many problems. Right now we are fully windows 2000 and want to get more in to UNIX so any help on what OS would be the best for just hosting would be great.

Also were I might find a good control panel that can run on FreeBSD that we can just pay a one time fee for not monthly like Cpanle don't want to get in to that yet as its $200 a month and we want to see how this takes off for us. Would need to be a easy to use control panel.

Thanks

RedHat has many security holes, so you better be supplying the patches. FreeBSD is very tight. Of course, any OS can be hacked, but FreeBSD is a tough nut for most to crack.

For a control panel that works with FreeBSD, try Plesk. One time fee as well.

Thanks WeinBar,

FreeBSD it is then. That is what all our Unix guys keep saying as well but just wanted to get some more ideas. I have looked at Plesk before every one says its more Dedicated hosting then shared hosting.

Is there any other good one out there that may be a one time fee like plesk. Plesk does look good but it needs a clean server what might not be a problem for us but would like some thing with a little more flex.

Well, there's always webmin, but that is only for admins. Plesk allows for client access (shared hosting).

I am currenting using Plesk as a client. I don't like it.

What don't you like about plesk it might be some hting i can deal with but would liek some thing better then plesk but from the looks it may be the only good over Cpanle.

Does any one know if you can use Cpanle on FreeBSD with site setup up on it or does it need a clean server like plesk does. Was looking at ensim but it only supports RedHat 6.2 so that killed that one. :(

I am starting to think its Plesk or nothing for users..LOL

FreeBSD is not only more secure but more stable compared to Linux. It is not as friendly so I wouldn't use it on a desktop machine, but its ideal for server use. Linux is widely used on the desktop so most companies offer that. Here are some that offer FreeBSD servers

Here is a review of various control panels, research to find which supports FreeBSD.

There is an advantage to using webmin instead of the commercial packages because of the way webmin works with the operating system, I don't remember the details but if you search for webmin on this board you will find the post on that. Webmin seems not as friendly as the commercial packages but it can be modified if you know or learn perl, there is a link to the message board for webmin at the http://www.webmin.com site...

Linux is pretty stable as it is. Between RH 6 and 7, 6.2 would be a better choice. I've read of problems with 7 and some programs not working with it.

As far as Linux and FreeBSD, there is some relevant information on http://securityfocus.com One article states that although Linux gets hammered more by crackers, it also releases resolutions to vulnerabilities faster. Some security people consider time to resolution more important.

you should do a search on Tim Greer (member of this board) as he is currently working on control panel. Maybe wait and try it out since it should be finnished soon (I think?).

If you end up using FreeBSD, make sure you have someone who knows how to work with it.
Some of the ins and outs can get complicated and you end up having more problems then it may be worth. Having said this, BSD is a great server OS and when it is set up right, you cant go wrong...

FreeBSD is preferred by most but Redhat seems to be more common. There isnt a wide variety of control panels out yet but there are many underway from various companies and individuals including ourselves. We have choosen FreeBSD for use with ours but the control panel will be capable of being used on just about any linux/unix system, not all but most.

Is there any way i could see a small demo of your control panel yet Jag. And when do you think it may be ready to go.

Sorry, we do not have demo up. It is still actually months from being ready. We still have programs to implement, testing, revise, then in house beta before its public. We will not release it until its bug free, stable, and complete. If theres one thing we learned from cpanel is there is a huge need for stability and a bug free environment.
