View Full Version : Please suggest a webhost for a rather small site

I used to use http://www.freeservers.com (which, despite the name, charged $9 a month for ad-free service), but they went to h--- a few months ago.

It was a gradual process, and now the email system never works, support emails aren't answered and phone calls ignored, and basically the only thing that works is displaying the webpage.

This site isn't really important at all, but can someone suggest a replacement host in the range of $5-$12 a month? While I need to get email, it doesn't necessarily have to be the fastest server out there...

A professional-looking email address at a registered domain is the main reason I got the website.

Bear in mind that I'm not sure if ANYONE visits the site, so traffic isn't a problem. :)

I have scouted around a while, and I've narrowed the field to a few companies (and NO, I don't work for them):

http://123cheaphosting.com/plan.html
http://www.csoft.net/
http://www.hostway.com/webhosting/gold.htm
http://iwebhosting.com/packages.html
http://www.telaweb.com/webhosting/solutions.htm
http://hostsave.com/index.php

Which one of these would you people recommend? If there are other good companies I missed in my 'newbiish' search, please enlighten me. :)

Thanks for the help! (And thanks for pointing out my mistake)

If you want a working pop and the server is down how will you get your e-mail so you should be looking for 24/7 uptime.

below10host.com

Extremely cheap, fast tech support. I have never had a problem with them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. All those hosting companies are a big help.

webdave, below10host seems like a good company... But I'm concerned with what their policy ( http://below10host.com/policy.php ) says.

"Examples of unacceptable content or links:
...
Any Site that consumes more than 20% of system resources

Following are a list of sites that will often require more than 20% of our systems resources: Multiple domains residing at a single IP address, domains with archives or galleries, (i.e. .gif, .jpg, .exe, .zip, .tar, etc.), and domain accounts offering download files.

We are not saying that your web site can not contain such files, however if at any time they consume 20% or more of our systems resources you will be contacted to resolve the problem."

My site WILL contain images and some ZIP files--thru not a lot. Does the warning mean that you just can't have HUGE GIFs? Other than that, they seem almost too good to be true.

You'll have to ask the specific host in question. However, many hosts don't allow archive sites (sites that are main just used to hold large numbers of such files).

If your site is a business or e-tail site that uses large picture files for pics of the products, diagrams on use of products etc. IMO that's different and is/should be acceptable.

Allan,

I have used below10host for a few months now. I do have jpegs and gifs on my site. I do not have any zips though. I am pretty sure that they just don't want you using the web space to offer downloads exclusively. If the zips, gifs, etc... go with your site I don't think they would mind. Best bet would be to ask them directly. They have the fastest customer support I have ever dealt with.

I can also recommend venturesonline, I currently have a dedicated server with them and everything is going great. Support is always there, even when they dont want to be. ::grin::

I also recommend Ventures Online :) Their hardware is super, their tech staff is commited to keeping things up & running and properly upgraded. And they're really reasonable! The V1 plan can be had for <$10, the last I looked.

Good luck!

I'd personally use alivewww.com as they have excellent offers - that is to say that they cater for resellers right down to budget accounts, which it looks like you are looking for. When I say budget account - I mean budget price not features. Budget accounts include options such as mysql etc. and are really really good value for money - I can't praise their support enough! Go with them, you will not regret it!

I recommend HostingMatters at

http://www.hostingmatters.com

Wide variety of plans, some that are certainly cheap enough to meet your budget.

Plus excellent and timely support. Read their Discussion Board and you will find a lot of happy clients.

I highly recommend them.

I used belowhost as well for a travel story, picture and movie website, total size was about 100 megs, don't recall the total bandwidth. They never said anything to me about it. I ended up moving it to jaguarpc as they had a special going for more space.

I also have some sites on hostrocket.com on the old alabanza and new vdi(?) servers and like them, the alabanza side more so.
