View Full Version : I just signed up for E.Freeservers
Tae-Hwan 04-11-2001, 12:53 AM I'm moving some of my websites from dialtone to e.freeservers... so far the experience has been quite good. Service is prompt, and they invited me to come visit their data center (I live an hour and 11 minutes away)
If this goes well, I'll colocate with them.
I'm posting this because I cannot understand how they can make money off their current prices, so I'm wondering if any of you could give me a good estimate on how much profit they make off their service plans. ^_^
Umm, I'll also keep you guys up to date on how it goes... What they offer is.. unbelievable.
bye..
dektong 04-11-2001, 12:58 AM hey, keep us updated... So did you visit their data center?
BTW, I could not find this information on their web, do they have any setup fee on the dedicated servers?
cheers,

manveen 04-11-2001, 01:37 AM Do you mean by this http://www.e.freeservers.com
This site is in some diff. language...
What are there prices and services ?
dektong 04-11-2001, 01:41 AM Try http://www.efreeservers.com .
cheers,
It's not actually free. They charge $299 for 200GB of bandwidth or less. If you expect a lot of traffic from your sites, it will come out cheaper but if not it will come out more expensive. Rackshack.net is still cheaper at $99.00 a month for RAQ4i and 150GB of bandwidth.

i'll visit their facility when my server is set up :)
you have to pay at least $299 down, for the bandwidth - but only for the bandwidth. i consider it a very very good deal...
i hope they don't go out of business... :D
comram 04-14-2001, 11:48 AM I'm now on a ***** dedicated server. I know, it's a shame... :bawling:
Have you got any experiences with them? Good, bad?
c0bra 04-14-2001, 12:05 PM I think if you do a search on ***** here you should find some ummm interesting posts. I wish you the best of luck for the future. :uzi:
comram 04-15-2001, 04:19 AM I meant some experiences with E.FreeServers?

Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.ECONTINENTS.NET 208.187.167.103
NS2.ECONTINENTS.NET 208.187.167.104
The domain is just created on 27 FEB 2001. New company?
Their contact details are the same as econtinents.net.
http://www.econtinents.com/contact.htm
http://www.efreeservers.com/contact.htm
Are these two companies connected to each other? What efreeservers are offering are dedicated server with 200GB at $299. The same server specs with 80GB at econtinents.com would cost $495 + $100 set up.
You might want to check out more because you are bind to a 12 month contract.

energy 04-15-2001, 02:44 PM Is your server at EFS up yet?
romero 04-15-2001, 06:11 PM Tae-Hwan,
It looks like you are going to be the next node9 when he went to NetColony; You get what you pay for. First time I hear about these folks, but for sure they smell weird. Good luck, Romero.
comram 04-16-2001, 04:14 PM I was getting sick of the lack support of *****. I've been waiting more than a week for the additional ram I ordered. But now I go with E.FreeServers.
The only negative thing is that it's going 3-5 days till the server is installed. They order the server from dell directly. But very nice and fast support. And cheap prices.
I keep you up to date when the server is installed.
Tae-Hwan 04-16-2001, 11:03 PM romero:
so far the support that e.freeservers has provided has been excellent. my server just got up today and i'm figuring out how to use the control panel right now ^_^
and for some reason i have a feeling that i will get more than what i payed for... and if not, then i can cancel anytime.
energy 04-16-2001, 11:07 PM "and if not, then i can cancel anytime."
No...you signed a 20 month contract....
Tae-Hwan,
You cant cancel anytime you like. They have a 12 months contract & you could buy the server for $0 after 20 months of continuous service. Here's their service agreement
TERMS OF CONTRACT
I. Financial Arrangements
1. This Agreement shall be for twelve (12) months from the order date when customer registers for the Free Web Server Services, or as otherwise chosen by customer in the Order Form, located on the Site, at the time customer registers for the Services. This Agreement will be automatically renewed (the "Renewal Term") at the end of the Initial Term for the same period as the Initial Term unless customer provides E.FreeServers with notice of termination either at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the Initial Term or the Renewal Term, whichever is then applicable. Customer may buy their server(s) from E.FreeServers at no cost ($0.00) after twenty (20) months of continuous bandwidth services from EFS Networks. Customer must provide E.FreeServers with your notice of termination by contacting cancel@efreeservers.com. Any notice of termination will be effective upon E.FreeServers receipt thereof. Customer must also notify E.FreeServers of your intention to acquire server(s) at the end of the contract period by providing correct mailing address to E.FreeServers for shipment of the aforementioned servers. *Customer has the option of purchasing the server(s) from EFS Networks at anytime at the following prices (additional sales taxes and shipping charges apply):
Tae-Hwan 04-17-2001, 09:40 PM well i remember reading somewhere on the site that i could cancel anytime......
well, anyway it doesn't matter because so far i love the service and support i'm receiving from them. my ping times are around 20ms most the time =)
the server is set up and is working great =) there was a slight problem with the pingtimes this morning(they were around 300ms), but they fixed it immediately...
after i'm with them for about a month.. i'm gonna start recommending them..... they're really great!!
btw i swear i don't work for them ^_^ it just sounds like it because so far i really really like their service...
energy 04-17-2001, 09:46 PM What is the IP address of your server?
JBIZ718 04-18-2001, 09:39 AM Supply some more info.
I also want to add Ensim to there servers If i colo over there.

you're pretty rich for a 17 year old guy
comram 04-18-2001, 05:18 PM Guys, listen!
Have you ever received a such mail from *****?
Hi Ramon,
How are you? Your Dell Linux server is currently being shipped to EFS data center in Sacramento.....
Thanks again for your time and business. Have a great day.
They asked me how I am? Ohhh, I love them. Very nice. Very, very nice support.
***** never asked me how I am. :( But it was *****'s luck because I would have to say that I was very unhappy.
Tae-Hwan 04-19-2001, 01:54 AM the ip's of my old (and still active) dialtone servers:
64.29.16.236
64.65.61.10
ip of my new efreeservers server:
208.187.164.50
yea i guess i'm pretty rich for a 17 year old.

What makes you think that you are "pretty rich" ? just b/c you can afford a server doesn't make you rich , if you bought a $10,000 server for personal use then that is another story :D
Tae-Hwan 04-19-2001, 02:49 AM well i was responding to the guy who said that i'm pretty rich for a 17 year old. to say that i'm not rich would be arrogant, considering that most of the world's population is starving to death.........
DHWWnet 04-19-2001, 03:08 AM huh ? most people who hangs around these boards are hosts (some are not though) and they have dedicated servers too... what makes you think that you are "rich" ? i have a server that is colocated and paid for and i'm hosting my friends sites for free and uhmm i'm 16 and poor :D:rolleyes:
Woofcat 04-19-2001, 09:46 AM The traceroute to 208.187.164.50 for me is 22 hops and pings are slow as hell... No thanks...
cbaker17 04-19-2001, 10:49 AM Yea it was very slow for me and alot of hops as well..
Mauro 04-19-2001, 10:54 AM I've being pinging this guys for almost a week and the average is 130ms and yes 20 hops from here.
wonder why!!
allan 04-19-2001, 11:40 AM The ping times do seem high:
--- 208.187.164.50 ping statistics ---
16 packets transmitted, 16 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 103.8/108.2/147.4 ms
and:
--- www.efreeservers.com ping statistics ---
19 packets transmitted, 19 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 101.3/107.3/149.7 ms
Compare this to:
--- dtwebworks.com ping statistics ---
15 packets transmitted, 15 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 77.0/80.5/100.9 ms
or
--- www.tera-byte.com ping statistics ---
15 packets transmitted, 15 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 60.0/61.0/64.4 ms
or
--- weinbar.com ping statistics ---
39 packets transmitted, 39 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 84.0/86.5/125.9 ms
Big difference.
allan
JBIZ718 04-19-2001, 12:36 PM Uuallan you mentioned that I was going into colo.
I am now not considering these efreeservers anymore.

i did not say i was rich compared to most people who hang out on these boards. the person who said i was rich did not say i was rich compared to most people who hang out on these boards. i simply stated, from a global perspective, that i am a rich person, which is entirely true. if you have a server that is colocated and paid for, then you are also rich compared to the rest of the population of the world. to say that you are poor would be an insult to those less fortunate than yourself.
sorry to branch out into non-webhosting topics.
hmm you guys are really scaring me with these e.freeservers pings.. maybe i made the wrong choice? :(
but i still get between 16-24ms pings. (from my pc which is on an at&t @home connection)
hmm lemme ask my server administrator right now.
ok he says he gets an average of around 80ms.. and he lives in colorado. i guess my ping is just really good because i live only an hour or so away from their data center. but when i leased a couple dedicated's from dialtone, i got around 100-200ms... but then again, they're on the other side of the country.
here is a ping block i did from one of my servers at dialtone's NOC(florida) to the efreeservers NOC:

cbaker17 04-20-2001, 06:03 PM Sounds like they use a backbone which has very little peering, so while some people may get OKAY results most will prob. get bad results....
ReliableServers 04-20-2001, 07:26 PM Hi, could anyone else post some ping/traceroutes to efreeservers. I am interested them because I have been looking at them and lanset.net(where efreeservsers is at) for some colo/ded servers.
Here are my pings from my adsl in southern california.

I too am looking to colocate my machine their cause I live close by and want to move from maxim.net. they seem to have all the right answers when it comes to billing and everything which is great.
but the word is out for me also on just how good their peering is? Im not too savy on these topics and would love to blindly signup but I need a good connection in the real world as we all do, us who resell services on our boxes, etc.

pmak0 04-25-2001, 10:02 AM Ok, so what's the verdict? Is efreeservers good or not?
My thought is that even if their ping time is 100ms instead of 20ms, that won't affect the website's response time noticably.
Has anyone done throughput tests, i.e. how many bytes per second can you download off them?
Also, what about network reliability? Does someone have a monitoring service monitoring their reachability?
cbaker17 04-25-2001, 11:00 AM THey seem like a decent company to go with, although I havent heard a thing about their support, a they must be a new company, so that might worry me a little bit, but if theres no contract you prob. dont have much to lose.
ezpzhosting 05-07-2001, 02:25 PM from efreeservers site:-
TERMS OF CONTRACT
I. Financial Arrangements
1. This Agreement shall be for twenty (20) months from the order date when the customer signs up and registers for the Free Web Server Services. At the end of the 20 months lease-to-own program, customer can buy your server for $0.00 from EFS Networks. Customer has the option of purchasing your server(s) from EFS at anytime by paying an amount equal to the prices listed in the table below. Termination of account prior to the twenty (20) months period requires the customer to provide E.FreeServers with notice of termination either at least thirty (30) days prior to the end of the Term. Customer must provide EFS with your notice of termination by contacting cancel@efreeservers.com. Any notice of termination will be effective upon E.FreeServers receipt thereof. Customer must also notify E.FreeServers of your intention to acquire your server(s) at the end of the contract period by providing correct mailing address to E.FreeServers for shipment of the aforementioned servers:
reading this it seems u can cancel with them anytime, but forfeit your free server.
smash 05-07-2001, 07:09 PM Hi,
I asked efreeservers if I could colocate more than one server under the same 400 GB package, which should not be a problem since the rackspace is "free" and if I pay for the 400 GB I have the right to use it right?
Well, here's what they answered:
Welcome to E.FreeServers and thank you for your interest in our company.
The minimum bandwidth amount for the first server is 400GB for $399.00 per
month. We can drop that minimum amount down to 250GB for your 2nd, 3rd, or
4th servers. Once you co-located your servers with us, bandwidth usage
charges will be based on each account rather than per server.
I'm not sure what he meant, but one thing for sure, I have to purchase 250 GB/server. Even more stupid, they have a 10,000 GB plan... 10,000 GB for one server? Tsss, come on..

this is what I Believe, or at least this is what I study at school.
a P400 Processer can do at 50mbps
so a dual PIII 1.5G will be able to do more then 300mbps.
300mbps * 300 = 90,000 GB
THIS IS IN THERY!! Whatever, who cares:D
smash 05-07-2001, 07:47 PM 300 MBPS on a 100 MBPS port?
Wow, these dual PIII's are really good.

If you buy that much bandwidth they let you co-locate more than one server for free.

Hostking 05-09-2001, 12:42 AM Looking at efreeservers prices it would be interesting to see who they are buying their bandwidth from. The no peering aspect would almost point to cogent. Could be why the trace routes are decent for some and not so good for other.
As I am sure most know bandwidth on top rated backbones costs $$$$.
determinist 05-09-2001, 05:26 AM As far as the fees is $299/month (with or w/o setup), i don't see anything special.. btw, their plan is quite similar to host2own.com..
mpjetta 05-09-2001, 02:47 PM I would like to shed some light on the discussion about the contract you are locked into with EFS. I was considering a ded. server with them until I got this email. I had asked them if they allowed (legal) adult content and here was the response:
Hi Nate,
Welcome to E.FreeServers and thank you for your interest in our company.
With regard to your question, you can definitely run adult (legal) contents
on your server. Please note that our free server is based on a 20 month
lease-to-own program in which you're simply paying for the bandwidth ($1.50
/ 1GB) during this time. Acquisition cost will be $0.00 after the 20 months
period. You can leave at anytime, but you'll be required to purchase the
server outright from us at the price listed on our site. As for monthly
cost, it is a minimum of $299.00 for 200GB. Additional bandwidth is still
charged at $1.50 / 1GB. In the event that you use more bandwidth than the
alloted amount, we'll send you a second invoice for the extra bandwidth.
Also, this is going to be your server so you can install any type of
software that you want on it.
Thanks again for your time and consideration. Please contact us at anytime
if you have any question about our products and/or services.
Best Regards,
Jacques Pham

This seems to be that you will owe them $2759.00 for the Dell sever they are offering if you leave within 20 months. Of course you could say that you will own the server, but thats a big chunk of change to come up with if they go downhill and you wish to leave. No thanks.
I was still considering about moving to them a while ago. But now no more... I don't like to take risks...
|I was still considering about moving to them a while ago. But now no more... I don't like to take risks...|
I agree why to take a risk and get locked on a 20 month contract!!! As I said before is better to host with big companies and pay a bit more than to host with a new company that we do not know what to expect from...

Romero was referring to the now defunct racklocation.com which was a joint venture between Netcolonies and PogoLinux. You can do a search for more info, although the juciest thread was deleted by pogolinux (the topic starter) - a "feature" of vBulletin that the mods have now, thankfully, disabled. To sum up what I remember of the saga, the racklocation deal involved netcolony setting up a server for you at DI and PogoLinux billing your cc and tech support... tech support?... ah that was the problem. People not even being able to get their server rebooted.

It's not actually free. They charge $299 for 200GB of bandwidth or less. If you expect a lot of traffic from your sites, it will come out cheaper but if not it will come out more expensive. Rackshack.net is still cheaper at $99.00 a month for RAQ4i and 150GB of bandwidth.
rackshack raq4=
128 megs ram, 20 gig drive 150gb
$250 down + $58 down for extra to match efreeservers
$99/month + $29/month for 128 extra ram, + $29/month for 24/7 monitoring
efreeservers raq4=
256 megs ram, dual 20 gig raid, 200gb, 24/7 monitoring
$0 down
$299/month
So total for rackshack per month (not counting $308 in setup fees) is $157.
Now rackshack is still cheaper. BUT if you want/need IP's, EVERY time you request them it's $29 setup plus $4/month for 4 ip's. If you need just 50 ip's, it will cost you $200/month! plus your $157 for the server = $357/month. PLUS you'll pay around $362 in setup fees for the IP's (now in defense I don't know if they let you order 50 at once and not pay $29 setup per 4.. but $1/month per IP still).
efreeservers = free unlimited ip's.
Oh yeah.. still get 50 gigs traffic more with efreeservers. Some hosts are running dedicated servers for this price that only get 50 gigs total per month to begin with!
So who has the better deal even with a FEW customers?
I say this as I have followed the posts about efreeservers closely. I have a new server with Burst and and VERY happy with it and Burst. I'm thinking about adding a NT machine and am thinking of going with efreeservers if I continue to see good posts about them.

Not bad really. :-)
big_smooth 06-27-2001, 05:05 PM Just wondering if any of the current Efreeservers.com customers could give us their opinion on the service they're receiving right now...
Basically a status report...
With those prices, I'm EXTREMELY interested in efreeservers.com
Aloha,
I am looking at them close also
all emails I have asked them questions on have had good response time so far
the one other thing is if you get a dell win 2k box you will need something to run dns and mail on as the dells seem not to have a dns server on them ???
not sure if you can install off win2k the dns service but a good fyi
big_smooth 06-27-2001, 05:38 PM In their service agreement, they say they're not responsible for absolutely anything...
apparently, they can not be held liable for anything!!!
Is that common among these dedicated server providers?

Yes most I have seen
a way of trying to protect themselves
if they do say they are responsibvle for certain things it will then somehow say but in the case of ...
to get out of it ;)
managed servers you will get people saying they are responsible for stuff
although efreeservers I thought said will do updates patches etc...
sbrad 06-27-2001, 06:45 PM Big_Smooth:
I've been working closely with eFreeServers since they began, and I have been very happy with the relationship. I have NEVER gotten a raw deal with them, and they are extremely above-board. Honesty is hard to come by in this business...I know because I've worked at most levels of hosting/co-location/managed servers...and the openness and candor is very refreshing. I'll have my first Raq with them in July, and I expect to have many more.
Honu-
No, you can not run DNS from the Dell.Power.app's. In fact, it has been my unfortunate experience with them that you can't do much. For the best DNS experience, I would recommend either a Raq or one of their Extreme FreeBSD's and install either Webmin or PLESK. But I'm partial to Cobalt myself. :)
Aloha
thanks
I might try to setup a extra server and do dns on it and then use my raq as secondary
not sure yet but bummer though
or just run a straight win2k server and run dns from it
ahhhh decisions ;)
sbrad 06-27-2001, 07:06 PM Additionally, if you want to run primary, they will happily handle secondary for you if you want.

cool to know that they will do second then
you have a server with them ??
if so what kind ??
I know on there win2k sign up they show the dns stuff ??
mahalo
sbrad 06-27-2001, 08:31 PM I have setup several servers with them. Right now I'm working on getting a web hosting company off the ground, and it will be on a Raq 4r.
Another great thing (and I don't mean to keep proselytizing for them, but they really do have the most personal service I have seen), but I am able to resell their co-location and dedicated servers also, and that really expands my potential. For example: $50 referral fee and then 10% of monthly bandwidth revenues is pretty good. Or, if you prefer, you can wrap your own label around it, sell the bandwidth for what you want, and keep everything over $1/GB.

What is the setup/initial cost of getting this done? I'm intersted....
What are the monthly fees and etc....
Cause, the pricing details on their website is very very vague! and when i contacted them via email, they weren't being too clear either.

http://resellers.efreeservers.com/
big_smooth 07-25-2001, 10:58 AM it's free for the reseller, who will earn referral fees...but, it does not say antyhing about the private label reseller.
StephenRS 07-25-2001, 03:15 PM Their co-location prices seem out of line with the dedicated to me. They sure seem to want to push the "equipment" and not their network.
This has scared me away from them in terms of my search for a California co-location provider.

Simply put, their colo prices start at around $1/GB (and go as low as $.70/GB for those with really deep pockets), and they don't charge for the rack space.
Their dedicated servers are a flat $1.50/GB across the board. This, in my opinion, is not a bad price at all, and indeed seems very competitive.
I'm not trying to argue, as I'm obviously a happy customer...but where is it "out of line"?

Fremont Servers 08-07-2001, 03:13 AM I am also interested in knowing about this too.
For those who have been with EFS for awhile, can you write something?
maxbear 08-07-2001, 03:21 AM I also have a dedicated server with them.
All I can say their speed, support and everthing is great so far. You will always have great connection speed because they sell bandwidth to make money. I normally, transfer around 15GB per day without a single problem. May be it's because the connection speed and Dell server.
They are using 100MB/s port, don't like rackspace, they use 10MB/s port only and if you want to upgrade, you need to pay more per month. This is great for high traffic site.
Anyway, the price is worth for the services.

did you get a win2k or unix box ??
if you got a win2k
what are you using for
DNS ???
email pop ???
FTP ???
Mahalos
maxbear 08-07-2001, 06:48 AM I only get a linux box. I use it for web server. Pretty good.
microsol 08-07-2001, 07:33 AM We also have some servers with them, althought our main site is still at the first location we had before signup with efrees. I find it a very good value compared to other services. You get 1GB bandwidth for $1.50 and own the server after 20 month. You can say 20 month contracts are s*** but i have a hosting company and i dont plan to go out of business within 20 month. There's no point to do it, so why NOT a 20 month contract?
You may say "the server will be old and outdated after this 20 month but look at it the other way: Is a double Pentium III @ 1GHz with 2 gigs of RAM REALLY outdated? HOw many ppl run hosting companies on Raq3's and 4's? If they're not outdated but running very fine i can not see the point not to sign a contract. :D

totally agree with ya it will be good for some time (over 20 months)
what box did you get ???

I think the server would be good for the next 48 month. If it doesn't meet the requirements in 48 month it can be used for hosting html pages ONLY, or you just put some webs with high requirements onto other (newer) servers. There might be some other problems like hard disk crashes, memory problems or other but you will have these problems anyway with every server after some time! It's never too late to aquire or lease a own server!!!
Trevor 08-07-2001, 08:56 AM how ready are these servers to start up and host a couple sites.
i know they are missing quite a few things, some miss the DNS and some dont have the email server etc.
Is it alot of work to get them up to speed?

well the win2k dell solution does not have dns and a pop on it you will have to get one
I am not sure but others have said that the MS dns that is on win2k will not work on the Dell so
the dns issue would be the biggest hurdle
teh unix ones should not be a problem to get up and going
even if bind or equivelant is not installed it would be easy enough ?
depends on what ya need I guess
Unix - Pretty much ready to go
win2k - needs DNS, FTP, POP server
sbrad 08-08-2001, 04:01 PM Time for an update, customers that have posted in the past please report to data entry window (a.k.a Post Reply).
I've had a server with EFS since June, and I've been having it monitored by easymonitor.com. So far, I've got 100% uptime.
StephenRS 08-18-2001, 01:53 PM OK -- efreeservers is now near the top of my list for a co-location provider.
My problem / concern is this...
I will have a 3-legged firewall. The firewall will have two adapters bridgeing (no IP addresses) and a third interface with an IP address for remote management.
I contacted their sales to ask how this would be priced, and they said "If you want to have other equipment to go with your server, than there will be an additional $50.00 monthly fee."
My concern is that they aren't going to understand what I need and think that I'm trying to run two servers ($400) instead of one server + equipment ($250).
==================================
Understanding such a configuration:
In essence, I will have one system (firewall) that has 3 Ethernet jacks. Two of these need to be connected to efreenetwork (ISP), then the 3rd port is connected to the actual server via a cross-over cable.
So, in essence, eFreenetworks will only be connecting ONE computer to their network -- but with two different ports (one for remote management, the other for site traffic).
==================================
Anyone had issues with eFreeServers not understanding specialized needs?
The root of this issue is the screwy way they do pricing... they claim everything is "free" (rackspace, network taps) but then have a $200 minimum... makes a configuration like mine not fit right.

If you class providing support well above the call of duty in order to take a host from being a long term reseller to form on their feet running a server as "specialized needs", then eFreeservers win hands down. ;-)
I can't comment on your specific situation, but would feel safe in saying that if they can help you, they will do so gladly. Top marks for support as far as we're concerned.
