My site is currently hosted by ***** and I've finally made the decision to drop their services due to obvious reasons that I think everyone here already knows. The plan I have with them is 600MBs of space, "unlimited bandwidth", php3/mysql, telnet/ftp, linux/apache, and all for $25/month.

I need something comparable (preferably with PHP4) to that. I don't want to pay for more than $25/month. The site probably won't need more than 20GB/month traffic, and I need at the BARE minimum 200MBs of space. I've read a few threads on this forum and I was thinking of going with VenturesOnline's plan #5. The only problem is 100% of my visitors will be coming from California so I'd like to have the hosting company located in or near the state. Does anyone here have a site that's hosted at Ventures and lives in California? I'm interested in knowing what kind of latency I can expect. I'd also like to know how technically knowledgeable is their tech support people and how fast can I expect problems to be resolved. ***** tech people are absolute linux/apache idiots.

My other question is in regards to transferring the domain over to the new host. Currently ***** is the Technical contact for my domain. Will I end up with hassles on their end for the transfer process? Anyone have a similar experience?

Thanks.

Hi,
VentureOnline uses VDI.net, as well as a bunch of other hosts here do. Try doing a traceroute to VDI. You may find that the ping times are actually faster than hosts based in CA. VenturesOnline has many satisfied customers and I trust you will find the support both helpful and knowledgeable.
As long as you are the Administrative Contact for your domain, there shouldn't be any problem transferring to a new host. Your mileage, of course, may vary :)

You may want to enable your email so that some of the hosts that are located on the West Coast can email you directly about plans that would fit your needs nicely.
