View Full Version : SSL Certificate
rrsnider 10-17-2002, 12:06 PM Does anyone have any opinion on RackShack's GeoTrust QuickSSL certificates ? I currently have my Thawte Certificate coming up for renewal and thinking about saving some money. Is the GeoTrust widely used and recognized ? Is anyone using it ?
Thanks,
Bob
hostpath.com 10-17-2002, 01:54 PM I can't say I've had firsthand experience with them, but in evaluating all my options as I too have moved away from Thawte, I chose Comodo over GeoTrust or any other competitor.
IMHO.
multipleimage 10-17-2002, 02:14 PM We use Geotrust and we have not received any complaints so far. It has worked on every browser we tested it on.
akashik 10-17-2002, 03:08 PM Haven't had any issues with Geotrust here either after moving away from Thawte.
I never forgave Comodo for that spam franzy they did so we never looked at them

eddie 10-17-2002, 04:22 PM I thought Geotrust did all the Spam I saw it with my own eyes.
And there still prove if you search and see that chicken warned them

Geotrust CEO, himself personally and intentionally spammed this forum (knowing that what he was doing was pure and simple SPAM), and when invited to apologise to us all, he chose not to apologise.
answering the rackshack certs etc: They have ONLY around 90% compatibility (recognised by browsers) which means around 60 Million internet users will NOT trust the cert. Alternatively you can buy for the same price (or some people sell it for $39) a certificate that 99.3% of the internet population trust (Verisign has 99.5%). Afterall, the only reason why you are paying these CAs is because of the supposed browser compatibility (recognition) they offer.
Also if you search for "ssl certificate" keyword in google, almost all SSL providers and their resellers seems to be advertising there and sometimes it is cheaper to buy through their resellers than themselves directly.
Hope this helps.

He did not spam, he just responded to your attacks. The fact that you post under different names did not help though.

I don't know where you got those figures from, because they are wrong. You start by assuming that the users do not update their system ( the root certificates update is flagged as critical by MS ), if that is the case, even Verisign certificates will not be trusted. If you have not downloaded the root cert update and have IE5 that complains about a Geotrust cert, it will complain about a Verisign cert too.
As for the $39 certificate, why would anyone waste money when they can get the exact same one for $25 from Freessl?

Doing the above will most likely land you on a site run by a bunch of spammer publishing all kind of lies.
hostpath.com 10-17-2002, 06:33 PM I don't get into all this who-spammed-what stuff, I based my choice on which one seemed the best value for the money and provided the best support, features, and instructions.
High marks to Comodo also for issuing you a fully functional 30-day free trial cert that is chained to the real root CA, not some bogus test junk.
Now that their browser ubiquity is equal to Thawte and Verisign's, and their price is just $49 for basically what most folks need...well, the choice was easy.
As a side note, my last cert request on a new domain was verified by Comodo and issued in LESS THAN 90 MINUTES.

oh not again Marshall :bawling:
The forum Moderator "Chicken" have informed the forum that Geotrust CEO did SPAM the forum and asked the forum not to support companies who SPAM the forum.
The stats are from www.gostats.com and I am sure you can find these stats from any other independent stats provider. If you have a good source of independent stats pls share it with us.
I noticed that Geotrust advertise under the "ssl certificate" keyword, I know what you mean ;)
I agree with hostpath's summary though. its simple, the one with highest browser coverage, best support and cheapest price wins whoever this company may be.

Andrew 10-17-2002, 07:06 PM It sure would be nice for people around here to talk about SSL certs without you two whipping them out to see who's is bigger every time.
You guys NEED to stop this crap. Both of you. For the love of God, I hate Verislime but, dammit, I'd buy a Thawte cert just so I wouldn't be supporting either one of you!

No offence meant, but it seems that you have not researched the subject very well.

Did you know that you can get a free certificate that is unchained ( issued from a root cert ) for a whole year?
I don't know what you mean by the "real root CA", cause there is no such a thing.
For your information, there are a few root CAs and a multitude of intermediate CAs ( Comodo is one of them ) chained to the root ones ( Baltimore in this case ).

He banned Comodo as far as I can remember.

Show me where those stats say anything about root certs browser coverage.

How old are you?

If you are referring to me, then you need to get your facts straight because as far as I am concerned you can buy your cert from whomever you want and it won't affect my biz in any way.
I have my reasons to oppose the crap being posted by you know who, if you want to hear them give a shout, otherwise keep out of this.

I'll keep out of nothing and I don't need to get anything straight. You are just as much a part of this as Hosty and GeotrustCEO so get off the high horse before you get knocked off.

In your opinion, how exactly am I part of this and what do I get from it all?
hostpath.com 10-17-2002, 08:45 PM Sigh.
WorldNet 10-17-2002, 08:48 PM I am not that versed in ssl certs but have been doing some research this evening...
I have a quesiton why would freessl.com have a Geotrust True Site logo?
I guess maybe it would be a conflict to approve your own site but it makes it appear as if they don't even use their own products...
Marshall 10-17-2002, 08:50 PM Freessl is owned by geotrust.

First you come here and tell everyone about your amazing experience with the world's worst spammers all the while pretending to be looking for value for money, and then when told few facts that you obviously don't want to hear, you sir "sigh".
How rude to say the least.
WorldNet 10-17-2002, 09:10 PM oh well that makes sense then :D
hostpath.com 10-17-2002, 09:26 PM My "sigh" was directed at the tone of this discussion -- but I'd have to say that your more recent response to my comments warrants a "sigh" as well.
For your information, I'm pretending at nothing. I just installed two new certs from Comodo and I reported my experience here accurately. I'm very impressed with them.
If Comodo is, as you contend, the "world's worst spammer" then please provide support for your assertion. I've not received any spam from Comodo, ever.
"How rude to say the least" you offer. I would say that in my opinion the tone and implication of your response are, as you stated, quite rude indeed.

I don't know. I don't care. It's extremely irritating however that the both of you seem to show up here expressly for the purpose of having fights every time someone asks a question about an SSL certificate.
Perhaps we should redirect this arguement. You seem to feel that you are riteous in your fight against Hosty and that you get nothing out of it. However, I maintain that your fights do nothing for anyone and make both products look worse.
My original comment was directed at BOTH of you, not a singled out attack against you. I don't know what you get out of this, but I assume it's something for both of you, because you both seem to do quite a bit of monitoring on this board for people asking about SSL certs...
Frankly, all the product names should be censored and all of you guys should be banned. When people ask a question, they want opinions from people who use the products, not to witness the equivalent of a barroom brawl between people with ulterior motives.
Yet this happens time and time again...maybe the words 'ssl certificate' should be banned??? Then you guys wouldn't get into such a snit over the whole thing???

People have been asking about SSL long before hosty showed up, I have never cared to answer because there is nothing in it for me. You will notice that I am never the one who replies to a post first.

You have my vote on this one too.
Andrew 10-17-2002, 10:13 PM LOL :) :D
nvphone 10-17-2002, 10:15 PM I use Geotrust and no problems.
Had it in under 30 minutes.
I looked at them all and felt this was the best for me.

I have tried to make sure that people can't lie to this forum about SSL certificates when questions asked (no matter from which company as I challanged and would carry on challenging any provider with their information where I thaught it should be challenged) and have tried to be informative and factual and try to offer guidance to my best of ability. When I thaught we had a good system going for last 4-5 weeks (since geotrust ceo, marshall, akashik disappered) answering questions and offering informative guidance without involving any company name whatsoever (from my part) (do checkout last few weeks responses). And now they came again and they reply to the post of someone asking about wanting to switch from Thawte, by bringing in this spam crap. Why do that?
If we allowed this type of crap to start then noone will be getting proper views from people.
So I strongly suggest we should be extra careful in making sure we are relevant when answering questions, especially where SSL is involved.

StevenG 10-18-2002, 06:02 AM why is it every thread about ssl certs brings this out??
Geez do you guys have nothing better to do? Like, go sell some certs instead of pissing everybody off ........
Geotrust quick ssl or Thawte will serve you and your clients well....... 60 million internet viewers will not be coming to your site soon..... so don't worry... Geotrust or Thawte are just fine.. myself I resell thawte certs.. so I guess you could say I'm biased but i'm not.. whatever takes your pick in the price stakes is what matters.
Hope that helped some :D
