I read an article wherein the author stated that he traced a web hoster to another web hoster by the use of the whois. Does anyone know how to do this? How will I protect myself from being traced to my reselling account?

I would think that the article meant a whois was done on the host's domain to see the nameservers which can sometimes reveal the host which is being resold.

Many reseller packages come with private nameservers so as long as you have these then this method shouldn't reveal your provider.

If you do a traceroute on a reseller's domain (or a reseller's client's domain), then you will endup with the reseller's host. However, many reseller providors have gone ahead and registered some odd domain (but makes sense), which will show up on a traceroute.

Traceroute and whois. Thanks for the tips. Ive been doing these actually and it irritates me to know Ive only been successful with tracing only my website and none of my competitors. This is causing me to be dissatissfied with my host's performance.

Well I dont like the idea that my competitors know how much Im getting my hosting for. I feel that this information can be used to their advantage.

i don't think it's your competitors you really are worried about. they wouldn't have any benefit in knowing how much you pay for your hosting. i think you're worried about your customers learning how much you're paying for your hosting, and that they will run to them. Maybe you should adjust your marketing to teach them that it has certain advantages to host with certain resellers that can spend their time supporting their customers directly instead of going through a company that also has server responsibilities. Resellers should be able to provide more personal service unless they are hosting dirt cheap. Then your customers shouldn't be too worried.

If you are providing a quality service to your customers above what most hosts do, let them know how. If you're not, good luck.

I wouldn't worry to much about the price as long as you are providing added value to there service with good support etc. Most people in my experience would prefer to pay slightly higher prices and get a decent service. Then try and save every last penny.
