![]() | View Full Version : Any interest in an IRC channel for #webhostingtalk ? Nicholas Brown 04-09-2001, 06:29 AM << nick snipp >> [Edited by Nicholas Brown on 04-09-2001 at 10:06 AM] teck 04-09-2001, 10:50 AM i'd say move it to efnet..i'm there all the time anyway CJB 04-09-2001, 02:26 PM No thanks. I think we'd rather spend our time chatting in the channel, not fighting for control over it. Fiber 04-09-2001, 02:34 PM I'd be interested... jonglenn 04-09-2001, 02:48 PM Start one and tell us which net, I will be there. CJB 04-09-2001, 04:01 PM I should clarify. I think the idea of a chat room for WHT has potential, just not on EFnet due to the high rate of takeovers, attacks, floods, and other problems that plague that network. Phiberop 04-09-2001, 04:04 PM Correct, Efnet... or any other network that doesn't operate with a chanserv/nickserv type setup would be bad, and even the ones that have this such as Dalnet can be bad. I might not be a bad idea for a smaller server or a Private server. I might be able to get a box that could get a irc server setup on it. Regards, Mike Travis 04-09-2001, 04:09 PM Heck, I have a private IRC server already set up that we could use. If nobody proposes a better method, I'll be happy to send the details out. Alan - Vox 04-09-2001, 04:16 PM yeah sounds good travis, ill stay in it 247. Phiberop 04-09-2001, 04:25 PM Yup, sounds cool. I think it would be nice to have a chatroom. -Edward- 04-09-2001, 04:32 PM No not irc i cant use that :( Travis 04-09-2001, 04:37 PM Okay... in that case, connect to: irc.qwk.net ...and join channel #wht. I'll be gone this afternoon, but I'll hold the channel open. If it looks like it will get any use, I'll set it up with a bot and some channel services. Enjoy... TheComputerGuy 04-09-2001, 05:58 PM how to connect to a IRC is another thing Alan - Vox 04-09-2001, 06:28 PM download mirc http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0,10152,0-10060-110-4168471,00.html?gid=17127&tag=st.dl.10060-100-4168471.qf.10060-110-4168471 TheComputerGuy 04-09-2001, 08:18 PM I am in, No one else is where is everyone at? Travis 04-09-2001, 08:28 PM Come one, come all... hehe... I'll be away for a bit more, but I'll be in later. Nicholas Brown 04-09-2001, 08:29 PM Chickens hide out is cool: http://www.hosthideout.com Fiber 04-10-2001, 02:51 AM I'm in there...I'm the only one there. Drop in, and we'll talk. pyng 04-10-2001, 04:57 AM I've got a conference room server. It's not really open to the public yet because things are still being sorted out. The advantage is that, being conference room, it comes with a web based chat client. A disadvantage is that we're changing things and the server may need to be restarted now and then :) If you guys would prefer this instead, I'll drop the details here. Otherwise, I suppose Travis could put up a java client somewhere. P.S. no, it's not running on a windows machine on my home computer. It's running on solaris in a company's DMZ. [Edited by pyng on 04-10-2001 at 05:36 AM] Nicholas Brown 04-10-2001, 08:26 AM I Think IRC is better than html chat Im in there right now :-) pyng 04-10-2001, 08:41 AM Just to clarify this, conference room has irc support and integrated java chat interface. This means you can use your ordinary irc client if you prefer, or you can use the web chat if you don't need the hassle of downloading, installing and figuring out how to use irc clients. (some would say that justifies the multi thousand-dollar cost of conference-room. i don't really think so, but who am i to argue if a big company wants to spend the money) TheWingThing 04-10-2001, 02:12 PM Travis, I logged onto irc.qwk.net but it shows my IP address. I dont prefer this. Something that proxies on the server end? as in the dalnet, talkcity, etc? I think conference room also hides the IP address. No not talkcity - that's too proprietary. Just an example for my point. Wing. Travis 04-10-2001, 02:32 PM Hm... I've never thought of that as a very big deal in a non-public type of chat like this. I ran IRC server for a car club for a couple years (usually 30-40 people in the room at a time) and never had any problems. What is is that you're concerned about? pyng 04-10-2001, 02:48 PM EITHER: point your irc client to lists.mtv.co.uk port 9010 OR: point your web browser to http://lists.mtv.co.uk:9012/ Web users are automatically put in #lobby; irc users can just /join #lobby To allay TheWingThing's concerns, the first element of your ip is masked unless you do /umode -x. |
