Hi everybody
How long would you expect a server to be down if your hosting company experienced a major power surge problem which caused minor data corruption on the server. We have two sites on this shared server (around 480 sites in total on server)and the site has been down now for almost 48 hrs.
They say that "they can not yet guarentee a
time when our site will be back up"
Am I being unreasonable in expecting it to have been fixed quicker than this. This is a professional hosting company and we are paying I would say an above average rate for their hosting service.
All ideas / suggestions gratefully received
Thank you

Well, for one, if they are a professional hosting company, their servers should have been running on conditioned lines so that a power surge would not affect their servers.

You are not being unreasonable. The server should have been restored and your site back up as soon as possible (48 hours and counting is a bit much)

Aside from disaster recovery, you should not expect to be down more than 44 minutes a month excluding maintenance windows. You should receive maintenance notification at least 72 hours before they occur.

However, if a major problem does occur, I would expect a professional hosting company to have a major problem resolved in 6 hours or less. SLA's should both describe these situations and the process for resolving them.

I would have to agree with Michael and Franc, even if this were to occur they should be able to restore data from a back-up if they use them. or just pull the HD and replace it. 48+hours is a long time to resolve this type of issue I would expect it to be more like 3 -6 hours tops depending on their restoration methods.

Even if a hosting company wasnt on conditioned lines, shouldnt a ups filter out those surges, so does that mean his server isnt even connected up to a ups???

Charles,

That's correct...a UPS should massage those lines, so there shouldn't have been a problem.
