View Full Version : Running WHT
Hey,
I was just wondering... Your server fees for WebHostingTalk must get expensive. How do you pay for them? And the bandwidth must be killer since your servers are based at VDI. Do you guys have venture captial? Or do you have web hosts give you support money? It just occured to me that you guys have no advertising on your pages or anything.
Jim
AIZNT 04-06-2001, 11:47 PM probably sell out out names or any contact info or get paid by wizardhost to advrtise them or webtrends.
Chicken 04-07-2001, 12:05 AM See that link in the bottom right hand corner of the pages? That's how we pay for it. Server and hosting is donated by Carlos.
It is Matt's aim to keep the forum free from advertising. Of course if the t-shirt idea takes off, maybe the mods will get a raise :)
You mean, the MODS get paid for doing this? Is it a full time job? Man, thats cool though. Do you always have a MOD working 24/7?
Jim
gthorley 04-07-2001, 12:16 AM I Think Matt should give Carlos a nice linked graphic up in that wasted white space in the top left corner beneath Webhostingtalk I never even noticed that other little squiggle before you mentioned it.
Matt Lightner 04-07-2001, 12:40 AM The bandwidth for WHT can't be TOO high, as it's mostly text with very few graphics. I would be surprised if this site uses more than 50 gigs/month. System resources are another issue though. ;)
Best Regards,
Matt Lightner

klisis 04-07-2001, 12:44 AM WHT consumes average 15GB per month..-- that is what I was told some time ago.

No we don't, hence the little joke :)
Site5-Matt-
I think it is more 15-25, Matt (your other brother Matt for Newhart fans), removed even our spiffy logo to reduce transfer. Must be the smilies pushing all the gigs?

*grin* <--- (My futile attempt to conserve WHT's bandwidth. The bandwidth that I saved by not using the actual smiley image has no doubt been wasted on this lengthy, useless explanation)
Oh well... can't blame a guy for trying. *wink*
Best Regards,

eva2000 04-07-2001, 03:48 AM hey jim is that you ?
well if Matt upgraded to vB 2 beta 4 and enabled gzip compression that bandwidth would fall dramatically ;)
Man, I didnt know the little faces could comsume that much bandwidth...
Yeah its me.

:D They're kidding..
allan 04-07-2001, 05:10 PM MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I am going to singlehandedly destroy this board and Wizards hosting by using 11 icons in this post...that will consume all of their bandwidth and cause their destruction ;)!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
<dangit!! you can only have 10 icons in a post!!>

 lol
SI-Chris 04-07-2001, 08:52 PM It's all the fancy HTML table formatting that's eating up the bandwidth. If you save this page as text only you'll find it contains about 12k of text; if you save the HTML that makes up this page, it's about 50k, and that's quite a lot.
klisis 04-07-2001, 09:16 PM Well then, to save the $$, let's design webpages in ASCII format :D

You can specify in your vB control panel how many icons are allowed per post :)

Then I'll have to alter my evil plan...I'll start topics with titles like:
Linux kicks FreeBSD butt!
Programmers are overpaid!
And other topics that will guarantee a reply from Tim. His responses alone probably add 5 gigs to your monthly transfer :D.

*lol*
Actually I have noticed over on JaguarPC's forums that Tim tends more towards brevity than long-windedness :D
