View Full Version : How to setup DNS on a new server?

Maybe I'm not thinking straight.

I just leased a RaQ, and I have to need to set up my hostname and dns. During configuration I selected my present domain name (currently sitting at 'Catalog.com').

I want to transfer that domain to my new server and use it for hostname and DNS.

The problem is that I can't set up a DNS host with NetSol without a domain name, and I can't transfer my domain name to my new server without a DNS.

I feel pretty stupid right now because I am paying on a server that is useles to anyone but me.

Any help appreciated.

You should register the nameserver with your registrar (is that NetSol?) before you transfer the domain to your server. All they need to know is the hostname and IP address of each of the nameservers. The IP address doesn't need to match where the domain is currently hosted.

We have received your request to register or modify a host record.
However, we are unable to process it at this time because we cannot
verify its authenticity.

We have sent an e-mail notification message to Guardians for this
host and the domain name where the host resides, asking for their
approval or disapproval of the change you have asked for. We will
follow the first set of instructions we receive.

If you are the host coordinator for this host record, or are the
administrative or technical contact for the domain name where the
host resides, perhaps your authorization information is not current.
Please update your authorization information by completing and
submitting a Contact Form.

Is your domain registered with NetSol?

I registered at Catalog.com. I believe they are the registrars.

Registrar: CATALOG.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.catalog.com
Referral URL: http://www.catalog.com
Name Server: NS1.CATALOG.COM
Name Server: NS3.CATALOG.COM
Name Server: NS2.CATALOG.COM

Then you will have to register your nameservers with your registrar.

I went to the Catalog.com Name Servers Administration page.

Added my IP's to the DNS and deleted ns1(2,3).catalog.com

Got this message: Our whois server will be updated in 20 minutes. And the Networksolutions database will be updated within 24 hours.

Once the Networksolutions database is updated, is that when I submit forms to Networksolutions to register my host as ns1, ns2?

Then I can finally transfer my domain?

No need to submit anything to Network Solutions. Once the whois is updated, you can change your nameservers with your registrar.

Have you registered your nameservers yet? That process is not the same as changing the DNS servers your domain uses.

Contact catalog.com, tell then you want to register nameservers ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com, and they should be able to tell you how you can do it.

I sent this email to Catalog.com:

-----------------------------------
I registered my domain, http://www.***********, through Catalog.com.

Now, I need to create 2 hosts:

ns1.*********** 000.000.000.001
ns2.*********** 000.000.000.002

Then, I need to transfer http://www.hosttrack.com to 208.155.69.205

Can you please tell me what I need to do.

-----------------------------------

This is the reply I received:

-----------------------------------
You will need to register your nameservers,
ns1.*********** 000.000.000.001
ns2.*********** 000.000.000.002
with Network Solutions, once this is done you will need to have them make your nameservers authoritative for your domain.

After both of these things are done, your domain will point to the IP you designated.
-----------------------------------

I am going in circles.

Hmmm... Your domain info has already been updated to point to 208.155.69.205 and 208.155.69.206. The IP address of your web site still points to Catalog.com, though (it looks like your DNS service on your RaQ is working yet).

I can't even get to my control panel now, because as soon as I enter 208.155.69.205/admin, the browser does a lookup at 209.217.44.19 (catalog.com) and doesn't find me.

I knew I should have stuck with NetSol.

It appears the only thing I have accomplished is pointing my server 208.155.69.205 to Catalog.com servers (209.217.44.19). So now I can't even see my own web pages.

try doing admin/ instead of admin
that way, the server won't redirect you.
