View Full Version : Looking for new webhost (moving from HostRocket)
CelebsFan.com 04-05-2001, 08:22 PM Hi, after the bad experience we had with HostRocket (I will talk more about it soon), we decided we should change webhost! Attm we are looking for a webhost with the following specs:
- 200MB/+
- 10GB bandwidth/min
- detailed control panel
- PHP4
- 20/+ pop3 mail addresses
- 5/+ subdomains
- costum error pages
- /cgi-bin/, CGI execution on any directory
- MySQL Database
- SMTP server
and if possible phpMYadmin!
Attm we are looking at aplushosting.com, the problem is that the pack they offer with mysql support is $37 and we are looking for a less expensive pack!
Also very important a RELIABLE, FAST, with GOOD support webhost!
Sugestions are very very welcome!
Thanks in advance
Jusit

Check out Venture4 from http://www.venturesonline.com - they are reputable and support is great. do a search for them here and you will find a lot of comments.
Matt Lightner 04-05-2001, 10:04 PM Most hosts using CPanel/WHM should fit your requirements nicely. You certainly have quite a few to choose from. ;)
Ventures Online is being recommended all over the place. They seem to be doing pretty well. Wizards hosting is another Cpanel company who seems to be getting good reviews (although I hear they are having a problem with one of their servers currently). I have also heard good comments about HostMatters... but I don't think they use CPanel, and haven't had any personal experience with them.

allan 04-06-2001, 12:28 AM Jusit,
You also might want to look at Site 5's Web Power Plan:
http://www.site5.com/services/shared/comparison.html
It looks like it meets all your needs as well.
Martie 04-06-2001, 01:08 AM You might want to look through the huge list here at WHT
You will find tons of hosts listed!
Good Luck

RotoHost 04-06-2001, 03:06 AM Hi,
VDI, HostRocket's upstream provider, has had some recent connectivity problems the past few weeks. The problems you were experiencing may or may not have been HostRocket's fault.
Just my $.02 ( go ahead guys!... LOL )

Just my $.02 ( go ahead guys!... LOL ) I agree! No host is perfect, but it's really unfair to blame them for VDI's sins. I've been annoyed by it too, but overall I'm very happy to be a hostrocket customer...
Check Sierra Host at http://www.sierrahost.com
Their packages start at$7.25
Good Luck

CelebsFan.com 04-06-2001, 12:26 PM Tell me something, venturesonline.com doens't use vdi.net rigth?
Thanks in advance
Jusit
venturesonline is indeed in the VDI NOC
CelebsFan.com 04-06-2001, 12:30 PM nevermind :
"All Ventures Online servers are located in a secure Network Operation Center (NOC). The technology of serving "

baileysemt123 04-06-2001, 01:58 PM Site5 = VDI
Lots of great hosts are at VDI. A bit of downtime is par for the course... a person will have it ANYWHERE they go... I've been at lots of NOCs and every one of them had some downtime...
The difference is, VDI is doing something about it. And they are communicating with us about when/how/what is being done. Highly unusual ~~ and highly cool. :)

Their Network Whois Record shows that they're currently with Net Access Corporation (nac.net).
BurstNET's NOC will only be fully up and running within the next couple of weeks.

Nicholas Brown 04-06-2001, 05:04 PM Site5, Wizards Hosting, Ventures Online - they all seem to have good public profiles. I havent tried any of them, but as I said, they all seem good.
Matt Lightner 04-06-2001, 06:32 PM Just want to clear something up...

A month ago, this would have been correct. We are, however, no longer located at VDI. All of our servers have since been moved to the NAC data center (for more info see http://www.nac.net/nettech.asp).
As far as I know, Burst's new NOC isn't operational yet.

baileysemt123 04-07-2001, 09:22 PM Sorry Matt, my bad.
:D B.
ckizer 04-07-2001, 11:38 PM I host with site5, and now that they have settled into their new home at nac.net, it has been excellent! I was only down once (and that was because of server reboot) Between Nac.net and site5, it doesn't get much better.
Tetsuryu 04-09-2001, 09:39 AM I know you said you would say later, but I am really interested in hearing about your problems with Hostrocket as I considering using them to host my site. I would jusat like to get an accurate picture of what I'm getting into.
Thanks,
-Tetsu

Chris 04-09-2001, 12:35 PM Isn't the rule you can advertise if they post looking for a webhost first?
Cannot create a post, but you can reply to people looking for a host.

oppuse 05-17-2001, 12:10 AM I just want to type in big words that 'Hostrocket.com Sucks.' But that just doesn't make me feel any better. I am sick and tired of always visiting my website and finding that there is some kind of server error. Support isn't helpful, either.
They promise 99.5% uptime, and deliver maybe 80.5% uptime. All that time and money lost on a hosting service that can't preform.
Can anybody else relate to this, or am I the only one? I am on a new webhosting service now and couldn't be happier, but I am still a little bitter [if you couldn't tell].
So, please post how your expirence with HostRocket is. This should be helpful to anybody considering Hostrocket. It was great for me for about 7 months, but then it just went downhill from then on.
major 05-17-2001, 04:01 AM Definitely VenturesOnline.com (http://www.venturesonline.com). I have had my site there for over three months now, and it has been top notch all along. They have some of the fastest servers in the biz (Dual P3 1GHz, 2 GB RAM (!!!), SCSI disks etc), and reasonable prices. On top of that support is great no matter what hour of the day.
Recommended!
Dogma 05-17-2001, 07:13 AM www.Aletiahost.com I will be going w/ them as soon as I'm done w/ my month @ my current host. They have good, cheap plans and great service from what I have heard from their customers on this forum.
webfors 05-17-2001, 07:22 AM Just to clarify,
Site5 is no longer using VDI. They are now with nac.net.
Venturesonline are also no longer with VDI, they moved to a Verio data center in Denver (I have a server there).
timbo 05-19-2001, 09:41 AM Yep, Alteia Hosting ( http://www.aletiahosting.com ) are great. I have moved around 3-4 sites over to them and BOOOOOYYYYYY are they quick!
Even better, the company they use for the payment systems phoned me in England from America to make sure I had ordered 4 hosting packages and hadn't made a mistake :)
CWIhosting 05-19-2001, 03:42 PM Even if the problem is not the host's fault per say, and with the upstream provider, you can't just blame them as far as customers are concerned. An upstream failure is a failure in your service. Besides, you selected them. Not that this happened to rockethost or any thing.
experimentals 05-19-2001, 04:47 PM I use weinbar and I have nothing but positve things to say about them. i think you can get what you are looking for for about $18.00 a month. Probably even cheaper if you pay for the year ahead of time.
