View Full Version : Some people can't access my site

I registered a domain and use webhosting through tera-byte.com

My friends company can't access my site, http://www.enos.org . I am in the middle of setting it up and have a placeholder page there.

The site has been up a week, so I find it odd that he can't get to the site. He even tries to ping my server, 66.51.121.175, or enter it into the browser window, http://66.51.121.175, and he's still not able to access my site.

This has me worried that others around the country may not be able to access it as well.

The odd thing is, looking my site up at the WHOIS at networksolutions.com, I get the following

Connection refused: invalid ip addressThe previous information has been obtained either directly from the
registrant or a registrar of the domain name other than Network Solutions.
Network Solutions, therefore, does not guarantee its accuracy or
completeness.

Domain not found in remote registrar whois.

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: ENOS.ORG
Registrar: TUCOWS.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net
Referral URL: http://www.opensrs.org
Name Server: NS2.TERA-BYTE.COM
Name Server: NS1.TERA-BYTE.COM
Name Server: NS3.TERA-BYTE.COM
Updated Date: 28-mar-2001

Is it just his company having problems accessing my site, or is there another problem?

Here are two good sites for debugging network problems:

http://net.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/trace.sh
http://www.network-tools.com/

Both will allow you do a traceroute from an external point (traceroute gives you much more information than ping), and the second one also does other stuff like DNS lookup.

It seems to be working fine from both of these points, as well as my system.

As your friend to type this from the DOS command line:
tracert -d 66.51.121.175
and see if it shows something similar to the traceroutes from the site above (with the final hop being the destination server).

Thanks,

but when I do a WHOIS by my IP ADDRESS, 66.51.121.175 at networksolutions and network-tools.com I seem to be having problems, could you confirm this? I am sorta a newbie....

Do you mean you're doing a search at http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois for "host 66.51.121.175"?

When I try that, I get: No match for host "66.51.121.175".

But that's not too unusual. I get the same thing for the IP addresses of servers I have.

If that's not usual then I guess it's alright. I am just not able to do a WHOIS by host(IP) through any WHOIS database, the ones listed at networks-tools.com or networksolutions.com

It seems there was a delay in registering the Domain Name to IP address, from either Tucows or Tera-byte.

As I ran this report 5 minutes before posting, it shows me that although the Domain Name (ENOS.ORG) was registered/updated on 28-mar-2001, the last Backbone Database update was April 04, 2001 -- and it should have said April 05, 2001, since that's the date I ran the report.

I have no trouble accessing your site (from Alberta, Canada) using either Domain Name or IP address. So it looks like things are resolving and because of a delay (on somebodies part) the propagation is taking longer than usual. Give it another couple of days and check your Whois again.

When in doubt, it's always good to check with your Hosting company first. If they cannot explain what is going on, they will usually find out for you. Tera-byte is a Hosting company that is known for looking after their clients so don't hesitate to ask them questions. :)

You cant do a whois from netsol etc on IP address. However, you can search http://whois.arin.net/ for IP's ...
Or http://www.samspade.org has a fairly comprhensive list of tools.
