View Full Version : I may need to change hosting providers away from Tera-byte, but need a Canadian host

I have got a big dilema. I joined Tera-Byte back in March, and they have been great other then some server downtime for maintainance. But I am starting to hit brick walls (other then the one being erected 2 feet outside of my basement window of were I live). The first is not a major probme, but I would like to have this. I want to bring my mailing list for my web site internal. Meaning not using a third party place to host the list.

I am with bravenet for the mailing list, but I find they add so much ads to the e-mails and such. I would lie to haver the list internal located at lists.mysite.com

Now for the big problem. I have people who write for my site, and I went to setup therename@mysite.com, and well found that:

1. the disk space was also used for the e-mail acocunt space
2. I had to set them up as a user account

So what I need is a host that provides the following:

1. Is Canadian (I prefer this)
2. Doesn't use Cobalt ( I am finding this limiting)
3. has subdomains (and can point them away from there servers for example: dev.mysite.com)
4. Can setup e-mail accounts seperatly from user accounts for admining the site
5.has internal mailing lists (meaning I don't have to use listbot or bravenet etc)
6. has 100MB+ disk space althought my main site will be under 40MB over the next few years, it's the forums that will be the hog.
7. 15GB of traffic. I just want to be prepared.
8. fast servers Tera-byte is good with this
9. has php, mysql with more then 1 mysql db when I need it.
10. has phone support for when I need a prob fixed.
costs between $10-15 US
11. Is reliable and is on a fast network connection with fast servers.
12. can handle up to 20,00 page-views/day arverage page site 30KB

my other option, is to host my sites off of my 640Kbit DSL connection from home. I am extremely tight for money.

You might just check with Greg from
http://www.pureideasplus.com

Im not sure about the subdomains though?
I think his largest plan is 8GB bandwidth transfer.
Good Luck

I looked at http://www.pureideasplus.com. but they are pricy for what you get.

I need 10-15GB traffic and 50-100MB disk space for $10-15 US/month. also need linux.plus everything else I sated above. plus agood control panel of course.

is hosting it myself on a 640mbit DSL connection good enoguth to handle 20-30 page-views at once along with me using the connection?

If it's mainly HTML, yes, but there are several things to consider:

1) How much upstream does your DSL connection provide? Most provide a much smaller amount of upstream bandwidth than they do downstream.

2) Does your DSL provider allow you to run servers on your connection? Most residential broadband connections prohibit servers.

604kbit is the upstream. I am running the dev servers on the connection now

macwrite.dhs.org
bigt.dhs.org

Also the connection is dhcp and I know the trick to keep the IP.

I am going to go with a hosting place at this point. maybe down the road I will host myself. th site uses php/mysql

Well I do think that Webhosting.com is a great Canadian hosting company. I am planning to transfer my site to thier server soon.
Although I am not Canadian :-)

PS: They are expensive though...check them out!

Hi Basil

I saw you mentioned webhosting.com and just wanted to give you a note of caution. Of the 6-7 hosts I have been with, without exception, webhosting.com has been the "worst of the worst". Now, it`s been a while since I last hosted with them, so I hope you don`t just take my word for it. Do a search in this forum, and I promise you will find more, up to date, details of experiences with webhosting.com.

I wish someone had warned me before I chose them, but that was long before I first knew about this wonderfull forum.

Good luck!

Agree totally. Avoid this company at all costs. After suffering a 36 hour outage in July 2000 and canceling all service, they referred my account to a credit agency for non-payment. One system showed I had cancelled service and turned off my access to the server. The billing system never got the word.

Perhaps you might want to take a look at F5Hosting (http://www.f5hosting.com).
