MichaelD 04-03-2001, 03:47 PM Has anyone else been getting this at the Sitepoint Forums:
"The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later."
Btw, Chicken, I used you as my referrer when I signed up! I am pretty sure I saw you mention them before, along with the other places a have seen them mentioned. Why do they ask for a referrer anyway? If you get a TV, I want joint custody!

Website Rob 04-04-2001, 01:29 AM Thankfully, that's one problem I haven't had with SitePoint. I have noticed that since they changed things around (in Feb I believe) the pages are a lot slower to load. My problem is with them using "pt" in their CSS, rather than "px". Started a thread about this (http://www.sitepointforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19564) and a few others also chimed in, with the same problem. Doesn't look like they are going to change it, which is a shame really. Lots of other good Forums available though.
Wasn't aware of a referrer being required. Are you saying a person cannot register at SitePoint, without having a referrer?
Your link to spreetree.com sure brought back some memories. Wasn't aware Spree was still around! I remember a few years ago, when others were offering Free Web space of 1 - 5 MB, and then Spree came out with Unlimited. Although they had the restriction of 1/2 MB uploads, it was my first (and only) introduction, to Unlimited anything.

No, no, I am sure it isn't required! I was just wondering if there was a purpose behind it.

Uh... I think you have my site confused with something else! Spreetree.com (http://www.spreetree.com/) is and always has been (since Oct 1st 2000) a shopping site of sorts!

Michael
Website Rob 04-04-2001, 01:50 AM Whoops, my mistake. Spree.com branched out into the Shopping/Affiliate area. I assumed Spreetree.com was associated with Spree.com. Sorry.
I clicked on your Spreetree.com link(using Netscape), and got a 404 error msg. : http://www.spreetree.com/nav_ads.js

Hummm, just thought I would let you know I just got that same server is too busy--try later?
thats the first time Ive ever seen that at sitepoint!
Phiberop 04-04-2001, 02:16 AM Same thing here, must be having a problem... rare for Sitepoint :)
MichaelD 04-04-2001, 02:17 AM I assumed Spreetree.com was associated with Spree.com.
Don't say that! Next thing you know they'll want my domain name!
As far as the 404.
Not the N word Rob!
I hadn't caught this before because I only test using IE5 and N6. It always rendered fine using both. Anyway, it was a missing *.js file that I thought I had removed references to. I fixed it and viewed the site using N4.03. It loads fine now in N4.03, but man it looks like a train wreck!
Listen, the site looks fine using IE 5 or N6. If you're not moving forward you're moving backward! :)
Just kidding, I'll see if I can get it to work with N4.03 too!
What version were you using?
Martie,
I have gotten it multiple times since yesterday! However, the last time I got on there I didn't.

We're aware of the problem.... It is a vB performance problem (not a server problem, otherwise it would be affecting the main SitePoint area as well) and Wayne's looking into it now.
(BC - SitePoint Tech Administrator)
Website Rob 04-04-2001, 02:51 AM Michael, I was using Netscape 4.72 (just one of the many Browsers I use) and works fine now.
Don't know why, you'd be upset if Spree.com made an offer for your Domain Name? You could end up sitting pretty, on a beach somewhere! :D

(BC - SitePoint Tech Administrator) really... any idea of the what's up ?
Phiberop 04-04-2001, 03:14 AM It's all BC's fault!!!! Get him!! :D
:D
'Fraid not, Prequel..... Wayne left a msg in the forums and that was it...
klisis 04-04-2001, 08:08 AM Well, sitepointforum is a lot slower to be loaded. It's my only reason I don't visit sitepointforum much.

It's not an offer I am afraid of! It is the thought that they might want it for nothing! Oh well, they have no grounds anyway, so no worries. And at this point I would trade a beach for it any day!
BC,
I thought that was you at sitepoint! Listen BC, take a deep breath, stand up, and walk around for a while. It's a nice day out (here anyway). Hey let's start a group called PCAA to help BC cope! Or maybe BBSAA!

Justin S 04-04-2001, 09:34 AM I believe SitePoint now has a "lite" version of their forums that doesn't take so long to load. Though I'm on DSL so I wouldn't know if it loads any faster.
Deb Suran 04-04-2001, 10:01 AM The only SitePoint forum I ever check is the hosting one, and the past week or so I've had nothing but trouble. It crashes Netscape (4.73), it's slow, messages (especially by staff: BC and Chicken) have no text in the message box, etc. It looks like they screwed something up when they updated their templates.
kunal 04-04-2001, 10:02 AM aaaarrrrg.. i already hate those words!!
MichaelD 04-04-2001, 10:05 AM Justin,
I checked out http://www.justinstayton.com/ and man am I impressed. It is a nicely done resume/background page. You have set very high goals for yourself as far the multitude of things you want to be able to do! I hope you can accomplish all that!
A couple suggestions...
The little icons that say "Brainbench Certified" when you hover over them. Does Brainbench give you some kind of online certificate people can view? If they do, you should link to it. If they don't, then they should start!
You may want to put a note in the portfolio section about the fact that http://www.1sitefree.com/ has been sold (so it seems). It now redirects to another site and to some people, that don't understand the ever changing state of the net, it could look like you're trying to claim work that is not yours.
Anyway, very nicely done! I wish you luck in all you do!
Hmmm, maybe I should put up my own resume site? :)
Regards,
Michael

Change America to Australia and I'll be a charter member :D
In all seriousness.... I do have tri-yearly breaks at the very least (when I go off to orchestra camps to get totally pissed amongst other things *wink wink*), and thank goodness I have a social life off my computer; otherwise I'd probably have died of retinal damage and super RSI by now :D And during holidays I get together with friends and go down the coast to enjoy myself... But after a while I'd get computer withdrawal and I have to pull myself online again ;)
Deb : I had a look at SP from Uni, running 4.7 and the templates seem to be ok, though the font is a bit big (but can be adjusted manually). Results seem to vary between 4.7, 4.72, 4.73 and 4.75 (the latter of which I've got at home and looks ok).
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... The life of a musical geek (if there is such a thing..)

Thanks Michael! :) Actually, I'm sort-of redesigning that site right now. The new one will include my updated portfolio (about 9 other sites), as well as some more color.
Yeah, I'll look into linking to my Brainbench portfolio. Thanks, I forgot about that.
I actually use all of the programs listed in my resume. When I redesign the site I'll include a bunch of examples of work I did in each one.

Thanks for pointing out that "you too" were experiencing blank entries from Moderators. I noticed that also (with Netscape 4.72) and thought they didn't want to talk to me. ;)
BC
As I pointed out, in the thread I started (http://www.sitepointforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19564) at SitePoint, there is something wrong -- when a person has to change their Browser settings, just to view one site. But maybe that's just me.
KDAWebServices 04-04-2001, 06:10 PM It's pretty much down to the vb2 Beta 4 templates and some of the new code, a lot of the templates were showing blank pages for a time until they were replaced with the old ones. I'm sure Wayne will get things sorted out.

Well Rob, I didn't want to say anything in public over there, but... ;)
Rob and Deb, yes, I understand.... I'll see if Wayne can do any more about it.
Website Rob 04-04-2001, 08:03 PM I've noticed things are improving somewhat, BC. My last post over there (in the same thread I mentioned previously) gave Wayne more information to work with, so we'll see how things shape up.
Chicken 04-04-2001, 11:33 PM Just an update. Wayne, Jason, Jules and all the others at Sitepoint have worked to bring everything under control and it all seems fine now. *Whew*
