Does anyone have any experiene with IDE raid on Linux?
What raid configuration do you use?
What cards do you use? Why?

I haven't used an IDE Raid solution, but I am very interested in it as well.
I know pogolinux.com uses cards from 3Ware for IDE Raid 5 solutions. I'd love to hear some real life feedback on these.

Just a tip... as far as I'm aware at this point, the 3ware cards are the *only* IDE RAID cards that work as RAID under Linux. Everything else only works as a regular IDE controller.

Travis, no need to scare us like that.

It seems that the 3ware cards are the only hardware only cards but there are others that use software too.

We have about 5 or 6 servers using the 3ware IDE raid card under linux, it is really easy in an Single Processor system, but using it in an SMP system there drivers don't work well, right off the floppy, the best thing to do is to, upgrade the kerenel in an SMP system to 2.4.2, with the 3ware drives compiled in, (its comes built into the kernel) and it works great after that.

energy: um, if you're going to run software raid, why would you buy a RAID card?

I'm looking for hardware raid, not software.
http://www.research.att.com/~gjm/linux/ide-raid.html shows using cards other than 3ware.
Anyone knows a good e-tailer that sells 3ware cards?

energy: I can't get to the site you mentioned right now. I'll try later. What I was going from is your statement:
It seems that the 3ware cards are the only hardware only cards but there are others that use software too.
I wouldn't personally be interested in anything but a hardware-only solution. If software is involved, you may as well use Linux's built-in software RAID capability.
Here's some interesting reading from the Linux IDE developers:

The 5000 series (starting at $125) go only up to Ultra ATA/33. http://www.3ware.com/products/Server_DS_1_5.pdf
The 2 Port ATA Escalade Controller 6200 (3W-6200) is $155 on the 3ware web site, https://secure.magrabbit.com/3ware/cart/main.cfm
