Phiberop 04-01-2001, 12:49 AM Hello,
Check out these hosts
http://www.4webspace.com (not sure if they got more RaQ's in or not)
http://www.rackshack.net (Im with them now)
Just a couple that come to mind. I have heard very good things about 4webspace.com and I can personally vouch for Rackshack. Both are very good hosts.
Regards,
Mike

allending 04-01-2001, 02:13 AM It says on the 4webspace.com website that mysql and php cost $199 !!! I thought that PHP came preinstalled. And do i need to pay $100+ if i install mysql myself?
Or is the $199 for them to install it for me :)?
Also an out of the way question, does PHP4 come on raq3's? If not, can i install it myself without much complications.
Phiberop 04-01-2001, 02:38 AM You were probably looking at a RaQ4 for $199, these already come with php and MySQL. If you get a RaQ3 for $99 they will install it for a fee, or you can download them yourself and install them which isn't all that difficult to do. If you run a search in the RaQ forum you will find several posts detailing how to do this.
Regards,
Mike
allending 04-01-2001, 04:09 AM Erm, this is what they say on their page for the RAQ3.
I guess that we have to install PHP and mySQL ourselves if we dont want to pay this fee?
--------------------------------------------
Special offer:
For a limited time, 4WebSpace.com is now offering both MySQL and PHP bundelled together for only $199US!
And as an added bonus, 4WebSpace.com will also throw in phpMyAdmin at no extra charge!
Phiberop 04-01-2001, 04:17 AM Correct, if you don't pay that fee you can still run PHP and MySQL, you just need to install it yourself. Installation isn't all that bad, checkout these links for some info and help or search the forums.
http://www.cobalthosts.com
http://www.raqresources.com
http://www.raqzone.com
The raqzone link has exact instructions on installing PHP and MySQL on a RaQ3.

Mike
akashik 04-01-2001, 05:02 AM Umm, so let me understand this.. If you install PHP etc yourself, you get a RAQ at half price per month, every month?
Greg Moore
Phiberop 04-01-2001, 05:05 AM They have a section on their website for software additions. The fees are a one-time installation fee for MySQL, php, Chilisoft etc.
Regards,
Mike
cperciva 04-01-2001, 05:06 AM I think the cost difference is mostly because the Raq4 is a tad more powerful than the Raq3: 450MHz/128MB/20GB vs. 300MHz/32MB/10GB.
Basically, the raq4 is a $500 server while the raq3 is a $300 server. ;)
Chicken 04-01-2001, 11:22 AM RaQ4 also has Chilisoft ASP installed (a $600+ add-on), THE 4r has dual 20 (or 30) GB drives, RAID1, the 3's do not (not in any form- 3 or 3i).

Deb Suran 04-01-2001, 02:39 PM Better do a search on ***** before you sign up with them...
HostEval. 04-10-2001, 02:47 AM If you are looking for cheap dedicated hosting, then Rackshack is really the way to go.
I have had nothing but good experiences with them. I was pretty cynical at first but so far so good.
Good Luck!

cperciva 04-10-2001, 03:42 AM *cough* referral spam *cough*
dabystru 04-10-2001, 04:41 AM Well, Rackshack says on the site there are only 4 $99 servers left and I see no sign of additional servers coming.
[they have 40 now, so I take my words back - edited later]
BTW, does anyone know what do those funny !X below mean?

HostEval. 04-10-2001, 04:53 AM You should try running it to an actual RAQ. Those are microsoft servers that you are running it to.
You are welcome to try running it to http://www.startgrid.com

It means "communication administratively prohibited" (from my traceroute man page). This means that that gateway has been configured to REJECT these packets and return the appropriate ICMP packets.
A case of rackshack wanting to protect their (windows) servers, but not caring about their client's machines, perhaps? But more likely that they don't want to filter clients' traffic unnecessarily - who knows if clients need incoming udp packets on high ports or not...
