I looked at Host2Own.com; they have the following deal:

- Pentium III 866Mhz
- Intel Motherboard
- 512 RAM PC133
- 60 GB Ultra DMA HD
- Setup: $ 500
- Monthly: $150 base cost
- $100 for every 100 GB block of bandwidth you use (including the first one)

So it's basically $250 a month for 100 GB, $350 for 200 GB, $450 for 300 GB, etc.

That sounds like a great deal for someone who needs a powerful server AND lots of bandwidth. There are other hosts that offer bandwidth at $1/GB (4webspace.com, rackshack.net), but those hosts only give you the first 100/150GB at that price (after that it's $3/GB) and you have to use RaQs which aren't so good for CGIs.

So my question is: How good is Host2Own.com's support and network reliability/speed?

There are downsides to the deal they are giving you.

From their site "* Minimum bandwidth fees are $100 for 100gb of monthly data xfer"

The way I read that, it means that if you use 101gigs you pay for 200 and that other 99 gigs is mythical.

Although it is a fast server, faster than a RaQ it is still IDE based. If your running any number of databases SCSI would be the way to go, possibly then build your own box and co-locate or search for a SCSI box to lease.

Another thing I REALLY dislike. I had to fake the first screen where they ask for your info and things BEFORE I was able to see their terms and conditions, nowhere else on their site did I see it. I didn't read the thing in it's entirety but you may wish to do so before you go ahead with anything. If you ask me it's unprofessional to not make your policies clearly accessible.

Regards,

Mike

Personally, I won't go with the plan... First, look at the setup fee... I can almost build my own 1U server with that, then all I need is to find a good colocation price. Second, you need to ask them how much is bandwith overage. You do not want to pay $100 extra for using only 20GB overage, don't you? When I look for colocation, I always try to find the best price for buying bandwith in block (50GB, 100GB) but also a good price for buying bandwith per GB...

Just my two cents...

Where would you find a "good colocation price"?

I haven't seen anything cheaper than $2 per GB in colocation (dtwebworks.com, tera-byte.com).

Host2Own calculates bandwidth by 95 percentile, not actual usage. So, you could end up getting charged more like $3-$4 per GB.

Aha... Not really great after all :(
