My server is *really* fast, I did moan about slowness when I fist got it and they moved it and since then so far 100% up and fast :) It hasn't been long so 100% doesn't mean much.

As far as I know serverhost either own or use many NOC's so it depends which you are trying. Also as they have diverse connections it depends where you are testing from. Before they fixed it for my server I sometimes got 900ms pings while other servers I have access to could ping it in 40ms. Since the move it is always below 140ms and I am in the UK.

If you are interested ask Jeff on ICQ he always explains why the network is slow and what they are doing.

hey _G_,
can you try to ftp to ftp.uu.net and download this big file, uumap.tar.Z? I want to see your download speed... I have some other servers that I want to colocate... and serverhost is on my list.... Just want to know how fast you can burst on their network...

cheers,

Yes I will try it later and post here, I was reading your post about that in another thread.

I can't login to ftp.uu.net it says login incorrect. I was trying with anon and email for password etc. What am I doing wrong?

ftp to ftp.uu.net
login: anonymous
password: your email address

should work fine...

cheers,

Try using Lynx. After you launch it, type 'g' and paste ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z ... Then type 'd' when prompted to download the file, and watch the transfer rate on your screen as the file is downloaded.

Yup! My server was very slow from ~5.00pm - 7:00pm mountain time. It looks like its at normal speed now.

I can barely load my site at my server with Serverhost. A large part of my visitors are reporting this as well and I'm quite tired of receiving mails from unhappy users. So far I haven't heard any answer to this problem other than it looks fine at their end (but doesn't it do that always for a host?).

I have even tried with 3 different ISP's without luck. I will just see what happens in the next days.

actually, serverhost doesn't have an oc3.
http://www.serverhost.com/about.shtml says their Greenville facility has a 100Mbps link to Nuvox (which in turn has OC-3c's to global crossing and level3, i think), while the Columbus facility has 2x100Mbps links to aotech. I don't know why they have 200Mbps capacity to aotech when aotech itself only had a DS-3 to uunet and a fast ethernet 100Mbps link to FNSI (and another 100Mbps link to CMH-IX, but that seems to be just a small local point for local providers to exchange traffic with each other). Then again, aotech claims they'll be adding a gige (1000Mbps) link to level3 today, and another OC-3c to XO/Concentric in a couple of days time. (try doing traceroutes to alternet/fnsi/level3/xo to see if these links do actually come up, and whether things improve).

so speed-wise, things look on the up at aotech. but, my other post (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=7659)lists problems I am having being on their network. I hope your servers don't crash...

It's now 21:12 EST, and my traces to level3.net from aotech's "data centre" still goes through uunet. Perhaps they're having problems setting up the link... or perhaps the promised gige level3 links is more vapour.

I'm not sure what is going on with GAM's problem, because if you traceroute from practicly everywhere in the USA on Traceroute.org, you can get a 100ms time or less. Quite often you see a 30-40ms time from places on the East Coast. I can download that UUnet map at 500KB/s at peak usage. We are working with our engineers to correct any problems people may be having. The traceroutes GAM sent me looked fine, both showed like a 160ms ping from somewhere in Europe.

AOTech has been telling me their Level3 link will come online every day since January 31, so I can't promise anything with them. We are not adding any additional servers at AOTech at this time.

We are looking at putting servers in other locations to try and combat these speed problems that people are having (particularly international customers).

Please be patient with us - we are going through some major network restructuring and changes right now, and everything should be very good soon.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to give me a call at 864-282-2345.

I haven't observed anything wrong with serverhost's speed either. My traceroutes from the UK to the greenville facility are < 100ms. Traceroutes to the Columbus facility (aotech) would be slightly better than that, if not for a blip in teleglobe at new york. Whatever else, I have to say that aotech is still reasonably fast.

In comparison, my traceroutes to vdi were about 70-80ms, but are now at just over 100ms after routing via level3 for the transatlantic portion rather than JAnet's links.

GAM, are you in Greenville (nuvox/trivergent) or Columbus (aotech)?

I was never told. But I have received complains from users from Denmark, Holland, France, England, Thailand, Australia and US so it's a global problem. Tim has promised to look into this problem so I'm sure he will do everything he can to fix it.
