View Full Version : I'm really TICKED OFF at Hostonce
WyoDuner 09-24-2002, 09:43 AM Well, like many of you in the past, I have fallen victim to Hostonce.com. I was suddenly unable to access my site. I opened a trouble ticket and 31 hours later I was informed that my site was shut down for violating the high resource policy. I have about 1500 unique hits a month and transfer about 1.5 Gigs per month of bandwidth with 130 MB of files on their serviers.
I was shopping for a new host anyway but I guess it's time to get serious.
My cocern is that my domain name is registered in their name. I would really like to keep it when I move to another host but I've read about people having trouble transferring their domain from Hostonce. My domain name expires in mid-November.
I am going to fill out a trouble ticket to have them transfer the domain to me but if that should fail what are my options? I would appreciate any advice in the matter.
LinuXpert 09-24-2002, 09:57 AM As I know (because I have some customers hosted with HostOnce before), Hostonce does allow their customers to change their domain's nameservers to new host so I guess there will be no problems if you want to host your domain at another place. But you'd better ask them if they can transfer your domain to you.
Good luck.
Dnslinux 09-24-2002, 10:17 AM transfer about 1.5 Gigs per month of bandwidth with 130 MB of files on their serviers. Thats no way near "high resource". I guess its a reason why you should not go with a host offering unlimited web space/ bandwidth as you just dont know if/ when you site will be shut down.
WyoDuner 09-24-2002, 12:38 PM Thanks for the comments, everyone. Live and learn I guess. :)
My biggest concern is that hostonce is pretty sorry when it comes to support and I am worried I may not be able to keep my domain name or wait weeks to get it back.
My question is this: While I am waiting for them to transfer my domain to me, can I still secure a host and use that domain or have my old domain redirected to a new domain? Any idea how long it takes to transfer a domain?
Sorry for the newbie questions but my site is very important to me and I wnat to get up and running ASAP.
Dnslinux 09-24-2002, 12:53 PM Well, if you want to use your existing domain, you will need to change the nameservers to that of your new host. Try emailing them and asking them to this on your behalf first, then transfer the domain to you. This way you can host on your domain with the least possible down time.
Simply find a host to suit your needs and ask them for there nameservers. You will need this to inform hostonce what to change your domains namesevers too. Once this has been done, purchase the hosting plan.

multibeats 09-24-2002, 01:15 PM I got caught by Hostonce!
They are one of the worst hosts on the net!
Run!!!!
ntwaddel 09-24-2002, 01:18 PM the same thing happened to one of my customers, he was with myhosting.com
his site is like 50megs though, he was using like 4gb of bandwidth a month on their "unlimited" plan. Well they booted him for the same thing, almost exact wording "your site was using too much resources"
laaame

Yes, you can. Just tell Hostonce your new nameservers and I think they will update your domain in 1 or 2 days. After that you can issue a transfer request.
WyoDuner 09-24-2002, 10:34 PM Thanks again everyone. You all have been a big help!!!
gatty 09-25-2002, 07:12 AM and they were hacked the other day...so funny!

Gordo 09-25-2002, 03:24 PM I'm sure glad I dropped in here and read this thread.
I've now learned what unlimited bandwidth means.
Unlimited<1.5 gig monthly.
lynton 09-26-2002, 10:32 AM i don't think there is a host worse than hostonce. i had the same problem - removed for "excessive resource use" when i'd used hardly anything at all - just a week after i signed up.
no refund, no nothing.
they suck and apparentally fair trading in australia is looking into them (apparentally they're australian.)
