View Full Version : My story with Weinbar begins!

After a good experience with interserver.net (so far), I have decided to colo my second server at weinbar.com. Some people may ask: "so, if interserver.net was going fine, why did you go with weinbar?". The reason was because this time, I do not need CPanel/WHM. If I need CPanel/WHM, then I will go again with interserver. But now it's different story! Also, the extra charge for bandwith overage is cheaper at weinbar than at interserver, not to mention that IPs are free at weinbar (yea... get as many as you want). Withouth the need for CPanel/WHM, I have finally decided to go with Weinbar.

Before I decided to go with weinbar, I have been talking with Michael at several ocassions through ICQ. He seems to be a really nice guy. He has been willing to work with me, and though I have to refreshed him with the deal he has given me almost everytime we talk :D, it's still good to know that they are willing to work with my request no matter how small my request was. BTW, Mich is online most of the time at ICQ and he responded my questions quickly (another reason that makes me decide to try them). Hope this is still good with his tech support.

So as before, I build my own server (now: P3 733, 256MB, 16 GB with ASUS CUSI-FX m/b in 1U rackmount). Knowing that last time the onboard NIC did not work, I supplied my own PCI NIC. So I shipped the server on Saturday, 03/24/01 and it arrived at the NOC on Monday 03/26/01. The tech support did try to get the server up by the same day, but it was not the case; the server was up Tuesday afternoon. Not a big deal for me... A bit better than inteserver's 2 days set up time.

It costs me $75 for the setup fee, $50 for the server installation and $25 for the OS installation. Well, though $75 setup seems to be expensive for me (especially since last time it was free with interserver), it's still OK with me. I do hope that they would not nickel and dime me to death... On their page, the tech support charge was $150/hours (incredibly expensive, hope Mich want to clarify it here), but he was willing to lower down the tech charge for me (very thankful about this). Interserver tech has been great so far; they have helped me several times with administering the server. Hopefully the same goes with Weinbar.

The server has been up for two days straight... Hopefuly it would have a great uptime (connectivity/hardware). Connectivity-wise it has been good. Never got a packet loss so far (unlike VDI that has been having this problem with their router lately) and ping response is quite OK from here.

So far, my experience has been a great one... Hopefully it would still be great and even better (time will tell). For Michael, thanks for working out the deal for me! I really appreciate it. Please take care of my server :)

cheers,

get some xfer rates from various sites such as ftp.uu.net...

Ok... here is a test.
I downloaded a file from ftp.uu.net. The file name is uumap.tar.Z and the size was 8520221 bytes (around 8.5 MByte). Took about 21-22 seconds to download this. The rate was 380 Kbytes/s (or about 3.04 Mbps). Not bad, right? :D

On the other hand, I got about 440-510 Kilobytes/s (up to about 4.08 Mbps) download rate to my server at interserver. Impressive, since this is already counting some packet loss (10-25%) that VDI is now having (again and again). Wonder... why couldn't weinbar's OC 192 do the same thing/better than VDI? Is it because a distance issue with weinbar's NOC being farther than interserver from uu.net?

Anyhow... What do you think about these transfer rate? Pretty good?

why don't you do a traceroute from your interserver box and weinbar's one to ftp.uu.net?

OK.. another update... Thought people might want to know this.

Last time I was wondering how come Weinbar's only let me bursted (download)) to about 3 Mbps, constantly while my server at interserver could burst up to 16 Mbps (2000 KB/s). I was actually pissed off, so I contact them and they were suprised that they too could only bursted to around the same rate. So, they have their connectivity investigated. After about 7 days, they got back to me telling that now they have solved the problem (what problem? I am not sure).

Here is the result: I now could burst anywhere between 3 Mbps to 17.6 Mbps (2200 KB/s). A bit faster than my server at interserver. Although I am still sometimes wonder why I can always reach this 17 Mbps rate. They claimed to have been able to burst to 25 Mbps (note, before they too only get around 3 Mbps), but I have never got this rate. Geographical location might be the problem? Anybody knows what ftp site (big connectivity) on west coast that will allow me to do this test again?

Anyway... so far my experience with weinbar has been good enough... I had a problem with my last server sent there. It was not installed the way I have asked, but Michael himself was helping me to get things done around 3-4 am EST. Well, could have been much worse... So I could not complain much....

I am thinking of sending 3 more servers there, if everything still works as great as it has been know... Hopefully everything works well, only time will tell.

cheers,
