View Full Version : scratched CD solution?
akashik 03-28-2001, 02:45 PM Hello.
I have a scratched CD I need to fix. It's a tiny hairline scratch, but just enough to kick the CD drive out of it's groove. Does anyone have a quick home remedy for fixing them? I hear surf wax can do the trick, but I'd rather a few less messy solutions.... Any ideas?

I saw a cool solution at a computer show. Its some sort of thick liquid you put on the sratch and you put it into this spinning/waxing machine. It fills in the scratches in a few minutes.
I didn't buy it at the time (stupid me :)) and I can't find it anywhere. I'm sure someone must be selling it somewhere.
akashik 03-28-2001, 03:05 PM Actually I'm sitting here kicking my own backside at the moment as I was swanning around in a big computer store only yesterday - should have picked some up. It's 5am here right now though and I kinda need that CD fixed...
I'm hoping someone has something along the lines on anything I'd be able to find in my kitchen or bathroom. The good old "Make your own Space Shuttle out of Kitchen Products" type thing... :)

I once heard that tooth paste worked..... but I never tried it....
akashik 03-28-2001, 08:04 PM John,
Thanks for that one... We're getting closer. I just need one someone has actually tried that works now *lol*

Duster 03-28-2001, 08:11 PM If you have any candles around the house, try rubbing one of them over the scratch.
If were working on home recipes, why don't you try and melt clear wax and then mix it with menthol alcohol and try rubbing that over the CD. If it doesn't work, you'll have one shinny CD :)
akashik 03-28-2001, 08:39 PM Ok, I'll try the candle wax one. I've heard of that one before (or variations of it). I'll let you know if it did the trick.

Phiberop 03-30-2001, 12:59 AM Hey, if you can't fix it...... FRISBEE!!!!!
:)
akashik 03-30-2001, 01:13 AM *lol*
well that's an idea too. Oddly enough once I decided to try the wax thing it started working *shrug* whacky computers huh?
The CD itself is a part of a 29 CD set with 17 gig and 600 000 clip art images, so it was kinda pricey.. Might just return it if it starts to play up again

Phiberop 03-30-2001, 01:19 AM Art explosion 600,000 by chance?? That's what I have, a nice little set it is.
ckizer 03-30-2001, 01:28 AM Try it in a plextor, or TDK cdrom, if it doesn't read in those, your outta luck.

That's the one... and yes it's pretty darn good. The 1400 page user manual is nasty though - I've almost put my shoulder out twice hoisting it around :)
Well the CDRom is probably to blame a lot actually. It's always fiddly with certain CD's Being a laptop that's not out of the ordinary though... Next time it happens I'll just threaten it with the candle again

How did you accomplish that? I tried but lost my balance and fell down.
