View Full Version : Opinions about dv2.com & fastservers.net needed
Xandra 09-22-2002, 01:20 PM I'm considering the following 2 companies since I'm going to be co owning one with a friend. Has anyone used them before? Which one would you rather pick?
I've done my research (below) but just wanted to know if there's something I've missed out on.... especially want to know if anyone here has asked fastservers for an upgrade and how long dv2 takes if you ask for more ips.
http://dv2.com
The company my reseller is on (the same one I help with support) is using them and they are quite good with uptime and helpesk (VERY fast reply) but I've noticed that they take really long to get the parts of upgrades (sometimes a month) and if you ask them to save you a server, they don't do it :( though their free ips and no setup, I find very attractive ;)
http://www.fastservers.net
The celeron part and setup (I realise that 90% of the time, there will be a setup fee) are the only things that bother me, but I've heard nothing but good about them from their customers and a popular hosting company I know just switched over to them. They do have less bandwith though, and I don't know anyone who has asked for any upgrade from them yet.
And while I'm at it... does anyone know of any other places with servers around the same price range? I would like an Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon with Linux/Unix. I'd rather get some user comments instead of requesting a quote in the request forums. Thanks :)
Andrew 09-22-2002, 01:41 PM Well, anyone that you go with is going to have their drawbacks. You pretty much touched on the only drawbacks with DV2, the speed at which they handle upgrades and new servers. Otherwise their support and uptime are fabulous. For us they have been.
I haven't gotten a server with Fastservers, but I have been talking with Shane over the last few days, since we are interested in one. I'm still interested in them, but I found the following turn offs:
1) they only accept quarterly orders at this point.
2) upgrades are monthly and not a one off fee.
3) they charge for ips.
From what I hear, Fastservers has excellent support, which is one of the reasons they're on my list. We don' t have problems often, but when there is one, I need to know there's someone there we can rely on, the same way we can rely on DV2. I'm confident that Fastservers would be there.
You've chosen 2 great companies there, it's a tough choice. :)
Incognito 09-22-2002, 03:28 PM I have been a customer of DV2 for quite a while and have been extremely pleased in all respects. Their service has been responsive and excellent. I have servers there with over 200 days with no downtime. Others have only been down briefly with upgrades, etc.
As to fastservers.net, they are also located in an excellent facility in Hurricane Electric. Powersurge (the owner of fastservers) has been around for quite a while.
I think with either of these getting on a waiting list is a good idea.
Xandra 09-22-2002, 06:09 PM Thanks :) Since You're using dv2... how long does it take when you ask for new ips? I noticed that the server which pixelseven resold gets ips faster than the one bought directly from dv2 when new ips are requested.
Incognito 09-22-2002, 06:14 PM I advise giving an estimate of the number of IP's you are going to need for a server up front with justification. That way you can get an appropriate allocation from a single subnet.
albertg 09-22-2002, 06:19 PM Sorry guys, so is DV2 = http://www.tranxactglobal.com/servers.html
Thanks.

Yeah, it is. sorry I didn't post a link directly to that page- I wasn't sure if it was allowed.

I have gotten them the same day every time I have asked. :)
BurtonHost 09-23-2002, 11:02 AM I have been allocated them in an extremely timely manner too normally
Xandra 10-08-2002, 12:55 PM How long does it take for Fastservers to get ips when you request them?
dv2 has been quick and responsive in support and assigning new ips on request for my server. I've never tried out fastservers, so I can't comment on them.
Xandra 10-08-2002, 02:29 PM I've already decided to strike dv2 off. The last time the company I did support for asked for ips, it took them nearly a month.
BurtonHost 10-08-2002, 02:35 PM They have new fibres now so have more IP addresses i think.
sailor 10-09-2002, 09:32 AM we took so long because we were out and were conserving them.
we keep them free that way - if someone wants to pay for them Im sure we can get some kind of premium offering available that would always be available for a price. :)

If you're talking about DV2, the lines aren't active, yet they are supposedly lit. I am personally starting to have my doubts about whethor or not we will see them in the near future, or even at all. :bawling:
EStarr 10-09-2002, 10:36 AM The first time I asked for IPs from DV2 it took 2 weeks and a letter telling how I needed them. The second time it took 4 days. The third time it took over a month and a few emails to finally be told they didn't have any. I'm still awaiting some IPs I requested last week. Hopefully soon. Also, I thought I got 8 usable but have only been getting 4 with a new server lately.
Other than IPs and billing problems I have had great tech support from DV2. I've learned to just pay and tell the techs rather than go through billing about it. Sometimes upgrades take a little longer than I'd like but I can understand them needing to order parts, IE: for a Dual Processor.
I have mixed feelings about this company but the price and tech support are awesome.
Techark 10-09-2002, 10:54 AM DV2
When I request IP's and they have them I get them fast, the support guys are great to work with and very responsive. They do run out of IP's from time to time and it can get frustrating waiting on more. As someone else suggested estimate how many you need and ask that the server be provisioned with them up front.
All my servers there have always run like clock work.
They will normally save you a server if you are a customer wanting one in the next batch, but as I understand it customers come first then what is not taken by us is offered to the rest of the world. So if someone you know asked to have one held and they were not a customer....

As of today, it appears that they have removed Netrail as the preferred route. However, I've yet to see a trace that doesn't go through Cogent or NationalNet. And NationalNet is sloooow.
Andrew, you're right. I also see the traffics to my DV2 server are not going thru Netrail anymore (Cogent mostly) and it's quite slower than before :-(

Mine's faster through Cogent than Netrail. Guess it depends on where you are. I'm on Road Runner in New York City, so everything goes through ADTN. Netrail's peering with ADTN was a joke. Cogent is much improved.
The National-Net traces got better after that router blip earlier.
Hopefully they'll turn on the new pipes soon! :D
faculty 10-10-2002, 01:42 AM Supposed to be on next month - according to eservers.

Jeff told me this week...who knows...lol
universal2001 10-10-2002, 01:49 AM seriously.. i believe DV2 should have a PREMIUM IP pricing plan... I really hate waiting weeks for IPs because they have RUN out!
sailor, How about a plan where we can pay $25 to get IPs instantly or something similar.. DV2 has been great, only thing I dislike is the slow IP allocation thing. If you are lucky, you get IPs immediately, if not, try waiting weeks and weeks for a bunch of IPs.

Yeah, it seems to be a different answer each time you ask really. Your better off asking the magic 8 ball i think. Well, the update today brings us a bit closer to the date, I would say. I don't think its much longer now.
faculty 10-10-2002, 01:52 AM update?

Ya, Jeff posted something in that thread about them being down for a couple minutes.

sailor 10-10-2002, 10:58 AM Iamwilling to doinstant ip allocations on emergencybasis for 1.00 perip oper month. no questions asked if they want them. I amalso expecting the bgp to be turned upon verio today or tomorrow. Netrail was turned down yesterday. We are doing what you guys want - just taking ourtime to make sure things are done in good measure and not haste. thanks!

You're doing an awesome job! :D
:uzi: Netrail
Techark 10-10-2002, 11:14 AM Well I am not willing to pay $1.00 an IP per month. Free IP addresses is one of the things along with great service that keeps me getting servers at DV2 and no where else. I would be willing to pay a one time $25.00 setup fee or something to get a quick allocation real fast.
startrekdude 10-10-2002, 06:38 PM Well I nevered use dv2 or fastservers directly but in the past I used to get hosting from a company who resold space on servers they got from dv2 and it very reliable and fast.
Getting rid of Netrail was certainly a step in the right direction: Now my pings from Florida don't go through San Francisco on their way to the Atlanta datacenter. Of course nothing comes without a cost:
...
8 50 ms 53 ms 51 ms p5-0.br01.jfk01.atlas.psi.net [154.54.1.197]
9 101 ms 103 ms 101 ms p14-0.core01.jfk01.atlas.cogentco.com [154.54.1.21]
...
Has anyone ever seen a Cogent peer that was worth anything!? I've been consistently impressed by their inability to peer with anyone without doubling the latency.

Crappy peering yes, but still <40ms ping times from here. Kicks ass compaired to Netrail.
Still can't wait to see some non-cogent traces...:)
EStarr 10-13-2002, 10:38 AM I don't know, I still haven't gotten IPs so I have to set up resellers on my other nearly full servers. I'll get them eventually. I might be able to pay a one-time fee for more IPs to get them instantly, but not per month. If I wanted to do that I'd go to fastservers. Free IPs and one off upgrades are what keep me with DV2. I would have been fine if I got the 8 usable that I got with my other servers.
The worse part is the justification form. I'm bordering on the idea of filling out false information just to get one completed. I can't predict who I'm going to need IPs for. Right now it's only one account but I don't want to ask for IPs each time I need them, I think 20-30 would be fine and I'd be set for the rest of the server. It's been about 2 weeks, I'm used to waiting. But I don't like it.
*If someone from DV2 reads this, feel free to check out my Request Ticket.*
