View Full Version : Question about changing registrar
Capt_Nemo 03-28-2001, 09:12 AM Does anybody has experience in changing registrar?
My question is: will site(s) under domain name being transfered be available all the time during transfer process?
Thank you in advance
allan 03-28-2001, 09:22 AM Over the last year we have been slowly switching domains from Network Solutions to Dotster. So far the switch has been seemless, and I have not noticed any downtime.
Capt_Nemo 03-28-2001, 09:48 AM Thank you very much...
I'll go to transfer it right now :)
Duster 03-28-2001, 01:13 PM It should be an easy move with no disruption, though it isn't always. Someone here recently reported their new registrar had themselves listed as all contacts and their server information was used instead of transferring the existing information form the old registrar.
This is probably the exception rather than the norm. Nevertheless, be careful in your choice of new registrar.
Jaiem 03-28-2001, 01:23 PM Ditto. Recently moved my other site's domain from NSI to Opensrs. Quick and no downtime (as long as it's done properly).
As long as your new registrar is good and as long as Network Solutions doesn't have any objections, you should be OK.
I've been hearing that Network Solutions tries to block transfers if your almost at your renewal period.
Duster 03-28-2001, 03:24 PM NSI has no say, hence no right to block transfers to another registrar. However, there are limitations. Be sure to check them before attempting a transfer. You cannot transfer if a domain was registered within the last 60 days, if it has expired, or it is within 4 days of its expiration date. This last condition may vary with the registrar being transferred to, and it is best to allow more time than the bare minimum to allow for problems.

Capt_Nemo 03-28-2001, 04:59 PM Thank you all for your advices...
I've transer from register.com to dotster.com
Hope it will be smooth :)
I ask dotster.com about changes in DNS records (currently we listed in register.com DNS) - i never done transfers before and do not know - should i modify DNS record for my acoount or they will do it by themself? Waiting for answer...
It's almost night here - hope they will answer soon :)
And by the way - we registered about 7 months ago - so no problems with restrictions...
akashik 03-28-2001, 06:54 PM Capt,
akashik.net was registered under a different domain registrar than where it is now. We transferred it to Dotster a few months ago as all our other domains are all there already. The transfer went smoothly, and there wasn't a moment of downtime that we, or anyone else, noticed. That's included the fact it has it's own nameservers that all our clients domains point to.

Ditto for us.
Has anyone tried a registrar to registrar transfer other then from Network Solutions to another registrar. For example, an opensrs to a dotster or something like that. I just wnat to know if that process is just as seemless as transfering out of Network Solutions.
Chicken 03-28-2001, 08:18 PM Yes, I've transfered from an OpenSRS registrar to another registrar, no problems.
akashik 03-28-2001, 08:40 PM Actually the example I gave was an Opensrs registrar to Dotster. :)
