I've heard good things about ********, anybody else hear anything about them?

I would like to make a list of what domain registrars people think are great. Please tell me what you think of ******** and what you think about other registrars like godaddy.com and which you would recommend and which you would not. Thanks for your time.

Did you trigger any automatic censor or did you actually type in "********"?

It is difficult (if not impossible) to decide which registrar is the best. If you are just registering a couple of domain names, paying $35 or $10 doesn't make much difference. The tricky part is that don't simply assume that those who charge you more are rendering better services.

From what I see, the mean price of registering a domain name is about $10-15 per domain/year; and unless you have other reasons like a particular registrar is just down the road in your neighbourhood and you know the guy, going for the top 10 (marketshare-wise) is pretty safe, EXCEPT that you'll have to keep away from the couple of registrars that provide terrible services and were there because of their grandfathers. (If you read between the lines from the beginning, you can tell who are these registrars.)

Just my two cents.

ENOM = SPAM

Eric, im not sure if you know this... And of course, i can see the reasons and legality of why they could be doing this, but please note that you do get what you pay for. With enom's plans (and with it's registryRocket pages), they will indeed spam your clients with offers and promotions. And it will link back to you. VERY unprofessional on your part if you are trying to sell. And yes, they are still doing this as they just sent another email this morning asking me to purchase domains.

I don't like spam and will not tolerate it for my own clients. PERIOD.

Really?
Sorry to hear about your problem, I think it may happen with domains registered via Registry Rocket only because I haven't received any emails from Enom so far (I also have some domains with RegisterFly, who is also an Enom's reseller) . BTW, when I used Godaddy, they also sent promotion emails occasionally.

I also have hundreds of domains with enom and never get a spam. What kind of spam are you receiving from them?

I have an enom account and they haven't spammed me yet, but godaddy has sent me 3 announcement e-mails in 2 months. I did choose no announcements via e-mail on signup for godaddy, but the e-mail (one about them slicing prices) said it was "too important"

you all missed my point... they dont spam YOU.. they spam the clients.

you really think they'd spam the owner and get away with it? No, they spam the clients. I do not like posting things like this (as its often a waste of my time), however this is the only spam alert i've ever given :(

Is it a domain renewal e-mail they send under your name? If it is, you can turn it off in your account panel.

Erik, I think what people are getting at is that they have domains at enom and haven't gotten spam from enom due to it. I have registered domains through other resellers and never gotten any. I haven't had reports of this from others who have registered through me. So while others might not be 'getting it', it is because they also aren't getting what you say you are getting.

Those are my preferances. Personally, I have used dotster for years with excellent results. I also have used opensrs and found a professionalism unmatched by anyone there. The reason I choose dotster is because they (as will Enom) process the credit card and I don't have to deal with all the domain registration fraud attempts. I also have used Enom with good results. Just don't like their upfront fees to get the best prices and don't want to go through a reseller.

Godaddy is popular. I just don't like some of their practices including spamming my customers for hosting and other services and pricing at retail at very little more than their wholesale price. Don't want to compete with my supplier.

The one which is "star" red out here I never really liked although I still have about 30 names there which I purchased from someone else.

Avoid verisign and register. They have created more pain in transfers than I care to remember.

GoDaddy SPAMs customers of resellers? Is this what you are saying? Has anyone experienced complaints from customers about receiving SPAM from godaddy?

Was it actually directly from enom themselves? It could have easily been someone keeping a close eye at new registrations and just copying your email address from the whois database.

salsabil
09-26-2002, 04:15 AM
good point

i guess it must be someone keeping a very close eye on the database of new registrations (never knew u can do that)

oh well

:)

i guess then u can't do anything about it right?

zoli

Once you registered a domain name, the e-mail address of the owner will be public. Anyone searching the whois databases of new domain registrations every day and having some kind of e-mail extractor software can find out your e-mail address.

The email from eNom directly seems to be targetted at large domain holdings. The mail forwarded to us from our customers has been soliciting them to move their entire domain portfolio from us to eNom. Some would simply call this direct email marketing. Others consider unsolicited commercial email SPAM. eNom apparently things this is OK.

The rest of the eNom SPAM story is based on the TOS when you sign up with them. They own your contact data and the contact data of your customers and reserve the right to resell it to third party marketting groups. It's spelled out on the website.

Some people have a hard time with this position. Some people think it's fine and simply a cost of doing business on the Internet.

Does eNom actually sell these mailing lists? I can't answer that one way or another. The fact that they state they have the right to do so is enough to keep me away.

I'm godaddy and wildwestdomains all the way! Forget enom!

They also require that you deposit $6950 if you want domains at $6.95, according to zoli at this thread:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=592630

To get $6.95 domains you need to deposit $6950.

zoli
09-26-2002, 01:17 PM
Benjamin, you can get $6.95 (or closer) accounts with a small setup fee from any enom reseller. And you might check wildwestdomains again, you split your profits with godaddy....

Benjamin

Dear Domain Administrator,

We have been researching companies and individuals who maintain a large
number of domain names annually, and your name came up. I'm contacting you
to give you a little information on eNom, Inc. and our Technology Partner
(Reseller) Program. Depending on your business plan, our pricing and
reseller tools could be a huge benefit for your business, and save you a lot
of money.

eNom started out as a consulting company providing DNS services. As the
domain name market opened up we became an ICANN accredited registrar.
Through partnerships we've become one of the largest registrars in the
marketplace. Our focus is on providing exceptional customer service, and to
provide our Technology Partners with the tools to help them run their
business.

In addition to terrific prices ($6.95-$9.95 per domain) we also offer a
number of free services that most registrars charge for: DNS, URL
Redirection, Email Forwarding, API, and Parking Services. Our on-line Domain
Management System is unrivaled, and all of our reseller tools can be
customized to match your branding.

We would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Please feel free to
contact me for additional information, or if you have any questions about
eNom or our reseller program.

Sincerely,
Megan

I resell for a few registrars - have domains with 10 or more. My current favorite is eNom, my customer like their interface a lot. Not that I won't resell for others - openSRS next maybe ;)

The BEST registrar?
IF Price is no object - www.BulkRegister.com - by far.

If price is an object, then I'm just as lost as you are :)

I personally like dotster.com

They are fast with updates, they have an easy to use interface, and they are affordable as well.
