View Full Version : Ventures Online
Hello.
I would like to get some input on what you think of Ventures Online as a host.
The good things and the bad.
I may move my forum there.
Thanks for your time
Regards
Joe:)
phpcoder 09-21-2002, 04:34 PM Do a search of these forums. I have yet to hear 1 bad thing about them. However, I have not used them myself.
Akash 09-21-2002, 04:36 PM I give you my personal recommendation, Bailey, Paul and team offer unbeatable support - no matter if you get a dedicated box, vps/vds, or shared hosting...
Walter 09-21-2002, 04:45 PM Fast, reliable, very good support.
Thank you I would love to hear more.
I have been told by people that they are very good but I wanted to ask here where the pros are and get your opinion.
Im thinking of the V5 plan at the moment.
Cheers
Jedito 09-21-2002, 05:31 PM Pros: great network (100 % uptime since they moved to their own Datacenter) and support
Cons: None
I had been with them for more than 1 year, and I don't have a single complaint
viGeek 09-21-2002, 06:04 PM I was with VenturesOnline, for a while, and would have stayed if I didnt get a dedicated server. Their uptime was fabulous, Technical support was swifh, most problems are solved on the spot. Overall, I could not praise them enough, they are a great company.
labzone 09-21-2002, 06:37 PM Do your research and compare several providers. Ventures Online seems to work hard at supporting their customers and has excellent uptime. There are few cons within Ventures Online that should be mentioned as well.
1. Ventures Online had problems dealing with spammers and have or had been blacklisted. You can read this thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45481&highlight=spamhaus).
2. Ventures Online fails to address some anonymity issues with resellers and this thread (http://www.venturesonline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4362) has been ignored by their staff since some feel it's in their best interest to compete with resellers and dedicated customers.
The good, the bad and the ugly:
Good - Yep, fast support.
The support gives you answers that appear they actually read your questions. and fairly quickly. Thumbs up to Bailey.
They kept us posted at all times when they had problems. Even when they were down, you could go to their forums, and see frequent updates by the admin on the status of the repairs / restorations.
Ugly - Uptime depends on how you define it.
After two DC moves, several HD crashes, (2 back to back) failed router, ect. in 16 months, I got disenchanted with them.
Bad - All that aside, I found them to be too limiting. $$ for extra emails, $$ for extra db's, $$ for more of whatever.

Why then you haven't got your dedicated server from VO if they are so good?
DotComster 09-22-2002, 04:39 PM I love VO, so do my customers :)
Thanks for the info
Cheers:)

To expensive, I was looking for a okay system, with alot of bandwidth, and a cheap price tag, therefore I went with rackshack.
TheMMIz 09-22-2002, 05:12 PM Ive been with VO for over a year now and love 'em. They are not the cheapest, but are by far the best value. Support is amazing, and uptime has not been a problem. I suggest you do a SEARCH, and there are also recent comprehensive reviews on over at epinions.com, you might want to check that out.
They are by far the best hosting company IVe been with.

You get what you pay for, dont forget that. ;)
I have been with VO for about a year and a half now and they are a solid company.
Pros: Solid connections, great uptime, good support team
Cons: A little expensive( but i dont mind paying for less headaches ), sometime the helpdesk responses get repetative ( the support is still much better then other companies )
I would recommend them to anyone, so if you have a detailed question or would like a few domains of mine to ping etc go ahead and give me a ICQ or email.
Goodluck,

Fed-X 09-22-2002, 10:50 PM I too use VO. I have had a couple problems but they have ALWAYS worked through them on a fast track.. They respond to tickets fast, and emergency pages even faster. They have been very respectful to me even when I have been aggrevated and maybe not as cheerful as I can be. The only problems I have ever had are high-band hogs being placed on my virtual servers, and they gave me an option to wait while they moved them, or move me to a new server.. I'm no big wig user, I have 4 accounts with them, but they have treated me great and this by itself has kept me with them and a dedicated supporter. I want a dedicated server and Rackshack.net sounds like a great deal, but I know if I move, I will loose that great VO support, so I am looking into one of VO's new options for sectioned dedicated servers, or whatever they are called..
So, all in all, a big thumbs up to them...

adrianchew 09-23-2002, 02:12 PM VO is probably about as good as it gets for a shared host - with great support. The issues I have with VO is the upgrade path plus their guidance which I sometimes feel is a tad silly and overdone (this deals with especially owners of forums who were shown high end VPS offerings even though their forums hadn't yet reached that requirement level).
There are just more experienced VPS providers, and more value for money dedicated boxes to be had... VO's support level is different once you go VPS/dedicated, you've pretty much got to do a lot of admin stuffs, so the need for great support is lessened.
The other issue I've had is with their support forums - expect to see some more controversial and revealing posts by knowledgable customers go up into smoke, as their admins go out of the way to try and get the right image they want newcomers to VO to see.
I've also heard in the past that people have been asked to upgrade before nearing the limits of their plan - eg. if you're pushing 15G of a plan that gives you 20G, and you've got scripts, etc... they'll come after you first to get you to upgrade. The Terms of Service allows for that - so just a cautionary note.
HostDogs 09-23-2002, 02:21 PM I got nothing but excellent support from them. I would reccomend them any day.

As I see it VO offer an unreasonably and excessively expensive hosting. It's just ridiculuos to offer VPS with 50 Gb bandwidth for the higher price than Verio offer theirs VPS with unmetered bandwidth. If you are ready to pay money and wish to be with an industry leader which has almost 100-% uptime, then Verio is the ONLY ALTERNATIVE.
michaeln 09-23-2002, 02:46 PM I highly recommend VO... They are fast with problems and are willing to work with you. Never had a problem with them the whole time I had a server with them.

Curious as to where you see this price listing for verio?
Thanks for sharing it with us in advance.

VPS plans on Verio
Insatiable 09-23-2002, 03:53 PM I used VO for a year,
They're great, no doubts about that.
But I found myself needing more space, so I went with liquidweb.com because they offered 250 more megs and 10 more gbs than VO, I admit LW's support is a bit sluggish, but once they got all the bugs ironed out, they were a great service.
The only reason I've stopped using Liquidweb right now is because I have my money supply going primarily towards my car and having broadband and an account for my site is close to 80 dollars a month, so I just went with dynamitehost.com, so far no probs -- good service.

Not if you're looking at disk space. The most expensive VO plan costs $179 and gives you 8 gb of disk space. Whereas the most that you can get under Verio is 800mb and that costs $300 a month.
I guess it depends what your needs are, but for me 800mb is nowhere near enough.

It's not ignored - it was removed! :)
TheMMIz 10-02-2002, 08:50 PM That thread was removed with prior notice and an explanation [Edit: This is where I go on and on about a different thread I thought was removed]
Thanks
I went with VO
So far some minor server problems but they have offered to move me to a new server that’s being installed this week
Great customer service so far
:D
phpcoder 10-02-2002, 10:36 PM I have never used VO. However like many others have posted I have never seen 1 bad thing against them :)

That thread was removed with prior notice and an explanation. Listed in that thread was VO's private domain names, when the site gets spidered by google, when someone does a search for the domain tha pops up in a traceroute or such, it could trace back to VO. The resellers started the tread wanting such information not public, and so it isnt.
Is that the explanation given? Maybe you should tell VO to remove this thread (http://www.venturesonline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4359) as well discussing the same issue. It's good to see they finally listened to their customers a month after they were 'aware' of the problem.
TheMMIz 10-02-2002, 11:10 PM Sorry Sorry, I posted too soon, I was incorrect.
Prince 10-02-2002, 11:29 PM VO is great, but a little pricey.
Aplusmedia 10-03-2002, 12:11 AM I used VO before i have my own hosting biz..and they were great!!
like prince said..abit pricey..
Rebies 10-04-2002, 06:18 PM What sort of connections do they have comming in to their datacenter?
mgriffin 10-04-2002, 06:22 PM Hi Rebies-
VO currently has the following connections:
- GigE (1,000Mb/sec.) to Yipes (Level(3) & Genuity)
- GigE (1,000Mb/sec.) to Time Warner (national backbone)
- OC-3 (155Mb/sec.) to AT&T (national backbone)
I hope that helps.
- Mike
We host 4 servers + have our own HP 2524 switch with VO.
I recommend them. You will pay for good support and 100% network uptime. Keep in mind that bandwidth and support have a cost. Don't like $49-$99_servers crap :D
They have some issues with initial software installation on new colo-servers, but it can be resolved quickly.
Rebies 10-05-2002, 12:19 PM They have some issues with initial software installation on new colo-servers, but it can be resolved quickly.I might be a bit confused, but why would they be doing software installation on co-located servers?
everything includes in VO prices (for free) :)
intellec 10-06-2002, 10:21 PM VO does have a good reseller program.
