Hey,

I am looking for a host, they must have PHP and MySQL. The space and data transfer does not really matter that much, probley like 10MB of space and mabey 500MB or more of transfer. Just as long as they are cheap and got good uptime. and they must take payment by money order or some other method then CC

Thanks for you help

To speed things up as far as the payment goes, a good thing to do is if you're around a 7-eleven ... go get a prepaid american express card. As long as the host takes amex, use it. Much faster, and also secure since you can control when you have funds on it and when you don't so it reduces mischargers and the like.

Jeff,

I love your signiture. I mean I feel sorry for you because of it, but it does tend to put a lot of things in perspective seeing it :)

Hi,
That's the first time I've heard of a pre-paid Amex card. Sounds like a great idea!

Mhmm ...

It's a co-branded promotion between 7-Eleven and AMEX.

There's the 7-Eleven American Express Gift Card and the 7-Eleven American Express Internet Card.

They both work JUST like a regular AMEX, but more along the lines of a debit card as it is pre-paid and you can load funds onto the car by going to 7-Eleven.

Plus it provides privacy as you can use any name, address etc. with your orders.

I use it for dealing with a select bunch of web retailers that I don't feel totally comfortable with using my regular card. When I have the time, I'll make sure it's preloaded with just enough funds for each of my purchases.

I always keep a min. of $10 on it. I was billed in error for $150 on my credit card once and it took 3 weeks for me to get the credit back onto my card ... ever since then, I either use the pre-paid card or with sites/retailers that keep my card on record I'll just use my regular card for the actual order then update the credit card info with the prepaid card until the next billing period. Thus, no charges in error as they will get declined (unless of course its under $10).

I'd go with the Gift card as it can be used both online and off, and the Internet Card doesn't work at all online retailers.

You may also want to look at getting a debit card (i.e. http://www.ecount.com) for online purchases. Then transfer funds on a case by case basis for your online purchases from your regular credit card and it all happens in real time.

I wonder if you can apply for something like online... It'd be a handy thing to promote. "Get pre-paid credit" It'd certainly provide another opportunity for people to try out services with little chance to losing a bundle to shady operators. Once they were comfortable with the service they could just change their card details over to the 'real' one....

1- With the American Express Cards, you cannot order them over the Internet. They have to be bought at 7-Eleven stores. I'm not sure if the 7-Eleven Offspring, Circle K, is participating as well since they cover the area's 7-Eleven is not located in. But it's worth a try to check.

For more information, http://www.7-eleven.com >> Products >> American Express Gift Card / American Express Internet Card.

2- With the ecount card, you can order it online. However it takes a few weeks (I think about 3 or so) in all for the card to arrive because they send a letter first verifying your physical address.

3- With the AMEX card, you cannot use PayPal to transfer funds to the card as far as I know but I may be mistaken. If you really want to know, once you get the card, I'd try to transfer $5 from your PayPal to your AMEX card just to make sure.

The eCount card can be used on PayPal.

4- Age. With the AMEX card, anyone can purchase them. With the eCount card, they state you must be over 18 ... however they don't verify your age. So it's pretty much open to anyone.

5- If age is a matter for some of you who are under 18 without a credit card, I suggest you check out http://www.visabuxx.com. It's a pre-paid debit card co-branded with Visa and the bank of your choice (the participating banks are Bank of America, Capital One, U.S. Bank, National City, and Wachovia.). As long as you are over 13 and under 18, you can get the card. No credit approval etc. required. But there is a 1yr annual fee that you pay in advance, I believe it is $20 but I don't know for sure so just check out the site. Just remember that you don't have the same security with a debit card as you would with a credit card as the insurance isn't as much.

A new residence within CONUS? :)

Sorry, no clue. I'll think about it though over lunch and see if I can think of anything.

Jer17,

It seems this thread has strayed a little off topic!

Q 1. Can you pay via paypal? Paypal can be funded via transfer, check or cc. I accept it and I am sure there are other hosts here who do also.

Q 2. Have you checked in the advertising forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4). That is where hosts showcase their wares. You won't get much response from hosts here because they don't want to violate the rules. If you post your query there, I am sure you will find a suitable host.

Good Luck,
Michael

I have the same problem as coolguy23 does, I am not old enough for a CC and I am from canada, so this topic might just help me out some.

Oh, it is indeed helpful! I was just saying how the topic had strayed a little from finding a host. Like I said try the advertising forum. Explain your situation (how you would like to pay by money order, etc.) and your hosting needs. Any host who will accept the type of payment you want to give and fufills your needs will respond to you.

Good luck,
Michael
