Hi. I have several undeveloped domain names that I like to sell, but I just don't know where to advertise them. I have considered ebay, but I don't know about its effectiveness for selling domain names. IMHO, the names that I like to unload are better than most of the names listed on ebay.
Also, last year, an upstart multi-national company purchased a .com name for $50K. I have the .ca equivalent. Do you think I should hang on to it?
Thanks for your assistance.

I think the market for .ca domains is very different than it is for .com domains. To get a decent price for them, you have to chase down potential buyers yourself and really sell them the value of the domain. It's hard enough to get a good price on eBay for .com domains; for .ca it's probably nearly impossible.
I have a few good ones like 416.ca and 604.ca and I've actually been contacted by a "potential buyer" for them. But he was interested in holding on for a bigger buyer himself... I'm eventually going to develop those domains, so I wasn't interested in selling.

Stay far away from eBay, I once tried to sell a domain there and the person never paid so I was stuck with all the auction fees, it took eBay nearly three months to credit me back. Even if you were successful in finding an honest buyer at a good price, eBay charges a ton for what you make off your auction (something like 10% or 20%). I don't know if anyone else has had this much trouble with eBay, but this was my experience.
Thanks for the info. I was never comfortable in listing the names on ebay, particularly since some of the sellers were asking ridiculous high prices for meaningless names. In addition, I find that alot of the reviews on the sellers were questionable. I'm sure there are legit and good sellers, but I was afraid that my listing would be lost among the list of bad ones.
I have just found http://www.domainia.ca and I will try listing my .ca names with them. According to their fee schedules, it doesn't cost the seller anything. So, I will give them a try. They are also providing free appraisals for a limited time.
Now, I just have to find a decent site to sell my .com/.net/.org names. I checked out http://www.greatdomains.com, but I'm avoiding them on the fact that a few of their links were unreachable when I tried. It just kept sending me back to the login page.
FYI, in the past, I have received offers for one .com name, but the amount wasn't sufficient to offset my costs relating to it.

Ive heard
http://www.afternic.net
is pretty good for selling domain names. Ive never bought or sold there though.
Funny ebay was brought up. I recently bought a domain name through ebay. That was a first for me and all went well. Guess I just ran into a good seller :D

Afternic is great - I've been a buyer and seller there - and everything almost I listed there has sold ... and buying is a breeze as well :)
Have a great day,
Mike

First time I've ever heard of Afternic, it looks cool...uh oh I'm going to have to shell out a whole $5.

We have a new-ish member here as well with a domain site. Errrr... now the name escapes me, but it was rather recent.

I also dislike afternic for the 5$ fee.
Especially because each and every potential bidder is kindly invited to first hand over 5 bucks before he can bid for your listed domains :(
I think domain sales only happen by either waiting for an interested person to type in the domain and find you that way, or then by direct advertising to potentially interested parties.
Listing a domain on an auction site may be useful but I'd use any free auction site, since you have to send interested folks there yourself anyways. No advantage from listing on a popular domain auction site like GD or AfterNic...

I submitted a few of my domains to domainia.ca for appraisal after a link for them was posted in this thread. And I got a reply today... Two of them were valued at around $1000 (Canadian dollars), and one at $28000! The tough part would be finding the right buyer, though. :)
