Hard act to beat!

Not to sound negative... Being that I am involved in this industry (gameservers), its hard for me to see how it is possible to rent a 32ppl server (public) for only $110 per month.

It will pretty much use up a whole AMD XP class machine with 256megs ram (or more), and bandwidth will be *about* 1.5-2.5 megabits/sec sustained if the server is full. Given current bandwidth prices, from a low of about $50/megabit Cogent to at least $100 or ballpark for something decent.. how does this math work?

I have never been able to see how the smaller companies can do this. I only figure GriffinRun.com has been around for years for a reason.....

I come somewhere in between. We dont generally rent 32ppl servers, just because it is so uneconomical to do so, given CPU and bandwidth constraints.

Not trying to flame, in fact that is never my intention. Competition is what keeps our industry alive.. I just want to know.... HOW?

Let me be the first to say, wrong forum. :D

the answer to your question is they can't. they are just advertising low prices for 32 player so they can get money. they don't think about how a 32 player will drain the cpu instantly

so the server will end up lagging. but they don't care.
and wrong forum bud.

Those companies that offer pricing that low usually don't stay in business to long. Those companies aren't calculating bandwidth and cpu usage. A 32 person server uses about 200 gigs+ of bandwidth per month (assuming that the server is always atleast halfway full).

paying for a server from griffinrun.com is absolutely rediculous... I don't care if I were to get 10 ping, I'd rather pay less and get amazing support and little higher pings from a company like www.xgamingservers.com

I assume this is probably in response to my post.

Actually it IS possible to do this. First of all. almost all of our servers are private password protected ones that are sold to CAL league clans. These use *very* little bandwidth at all since we're not talking more than 16 users here and they're only for scrims and matches. Thus server load is very minimal as well. Our public server pricing is that low because we simply aren't making much profit off of them (it's decent, but not as much as we could be making.) But it's our private servers that keep us alive, not our public ones. The absolute max we'd load is dual 32s on our Pentium 1.7ghz rigs, which have a more than sufficient 1gig of RAM. With large amounts of ram, the CPU load is lessened by a great amount.

are you kidding?

two 32 player servers on a p4 1.7ghz

wow, looks like you know what you're doing.

not.

Okay lets see you find a host that'll dedicate an entire physical server to one 32 player game.

I think the "1GHZ of RAM statement" really shows the pro ;)

yep, already know of one. why does that seem so unbelieveable to you?

Incase you didn't know, when someone buys a 32 player server, they expect it to not lag. Running two 32 player servers, on one p4 1.7ghz, 1gb of ram, I GUARANTEE YOU IT WILL LAG. Both half full, or even one full and the other half full.

I don't think you understand just the amount of resources a 32 player game server uses. I'm talking from experience.

So the fact that you run a few game servers on one box, and then you're ready to slap on a 32 player, just amazes me. ALL of those gane servers WILL LAG becuase of that 32 player slowly filling up.

Dedicating a dedicated server to ONE 32 player game server, seems like a good idea to me, as long as you charge enough to cover the costs OF that server + make some profit for yourself.

So unless you have dual 2ghz, 3-4 gigs of ram. Running 32 player servers + other servers on the same machine on a p4 1.7ghz or something like that is not a smart idea.

I concur. For a public halflife server, 16 Players, I am almost maxing a Duron 1k with 512MB RAM.
A 32 Player public server needs it's own Athlon XP1700...
