View Full Version : Operating System - cPanel
twenty 02-17-2009, 12:49 AM Hi all,
I'm looking at deploying a new cPanel machine and just curious as to what operating systems you guys are running. My options currently are
RedHat Enterprise
CentOS
FreeBSDAre there any stability issues or advantges/disadvantages to any of these?
Thanks!
Shaun [WhirlHost] 02-17-2009, 12:51 AM CentOS 5, no question about it. We use it on all our servers and have never needed a reason to use a different OS.
twenty 02-17-2009, 12:52 AM Right on, thanks for the quick reply Shaun!
tuxpack 02-17-2009, 04:12 AM Yep, Cent OS is the ideal choice :-)
blessen 02-17-2009, 11:29 AM CentOS is the best for Cpanel.
Jeremy G 02-17-2009, 11:05 PM I Had a CentOS server for a while it was extremely stable
Core4Tech 02-17-2009, 11:20 PM CentOS is really the distribution of choice. Basically, it's RedHat Enterprise without the fees. FreeBSD, I have heard of some stability issues as far as running cPanel on it. Not sure if they have been worked out or not, as not many that I know of run cPanel on FreeBSD.
UNIXy 02-17-2009, 11:24 PM Hi all,

It depends on your skill level when it comes to managing any of these.
In terms of performance:
CentOS / RedHat
FreeBSD
The Linux scheduler is the best in its category. Task switching and process bookkeeping is snappy. I give it a 1.
In terms of support:
RedHat
CentOS
FreeBSD
With Redhat and if you purchase support, you're worry free. With CentOS, however, you'll either have to hire an experienced sysadmin or fix it yourself. Hence my ranking it second. With FBSD, you don't need support... if you've read the whole book.
They're all about as stable based on my personal experience.
Regards
RU-Adam 02-18-2009, 12:24 AM I'm using CentOS 5.2 x64 on two Cpanel servers. Works great.
Ron D 02-18-2009, 03:56 AM Everything I deploy, be it personal or one of the several server I deploy at work I use CentOS. Community Enterprise OS :) Everything is checked and rechecked, its the most stable OS I have used (as long as you don't go futzing with third party repos) and wouldn't switch unless it went the way of Ubuntu.
engineerroy 02-18-2009, 05:58 AM CentOS is the most preferred choice for many servers with Cpanel even though it supports other Linux editions
JohnJ 02-18-2009, 08:56 AM I've always preferred CentOS5.
Dougy 02-18-2009, 09:45 AM FreeBSD is absolutely amazing. I love FreeBSD; but, cPanel and FreeBSD don't always play nicely. I still use FSBD+cPanel on my servers, but I don't recommend it for a newbie. If you are familiar with BSD, then go for it. Otherwise, use CentOS.
finekey 02-18-2009, 10:14 AM I have used RedHat Enterprise for years on several servers without issues. It could come FREE for you as well, depending on the NOC you are using.
24x7group 02-18-2009, 10:17 AM My vote also goes to CentOS, we are running it on almost all of our Cpanel servers.
Schmarvin 02-18-2009, 10:54 AM I recommend CentOS. Only a few people use others, such as Redhat. And although Redhat has a good reputation. cPanel apparently likes CentOS more, lol.
Ryan-W 02-18-2009, 02:47 PM CentOS for cPanel machine. Works very much in harmony with cPanel. :)
KhensU 02-18-2009, 04:20 PM I'll have to vote for CentOS although I don't like it much. It is the perfect system for cPanel though.
Mike - Limestone 02-18-2009, 04:25 PM CentOS and cPanel definitely jive well.

aymanfekri 02-18-2009, 08:48 PM FreeBSD is best in performance and very stabile but not with cpanel i dont recommend it for non UNIX admin and can use port and troubleshooting FreeBSD issue (for me one in year :P)

twenty 02-20-2009, 01:36 AM Wow, a lot of great answers here! Definitely did not expect this kind of turn out. Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen! Much appreciated.
farshid 02-23-2009, 05:04 PM centos is very better than other kind of linux and you can run your business with less problem on centos and i use centos on all of my servers.
