is that a good deal do you think ?
edit:
Im getting it from the guy who owns http://www.add-link.net
Akash 09-20-2002, 09:32 PM doesn't sound too bad...but never judge everything on price
Chachi 09-20-2002, 09:35 PM It sounds good by glancing over it, although the "good stuff" is being provided as if there was a huge rationing on it (subdomains/mysql databases etc)!
I'm sure you'll get a much better offer in the web hosting requests forum, although be careful who you deal with. Maybe search for the name of the company you decide to go with on here.
Alternatively post the name of the company offering you the deal you stated and see what other users make of them. Good Luck.

is that a good deal do you think ? It would depend on where the deal is coming from.
If it's from somwhere like pair; then it's a good deal.
If it's from Bob's Bait and Tackle; you may want to keep looking.
Akash 09-20-2002, 09:40 PM If it's from Bob's Bait and Tackle; you may want to keep looking.
now that's a generalization :)....there are plenty of small companies that offer great services...as suggested already, do a little searching with the company name, ask around, see what you come up with....
if it turns out that Bob just finished "painting his shop" then move on, but if Bob has been around for a while providing "bait and takcle" to the locals and doesn't have any bad reviews, then consider him
Donithan 09-20-2002, 09:41 PM i edited the post with the provider. is it still a pretty good deal ?
last time i got a pretty good deal for REALLY cheap from someone else but the company ended up working ok for a couple months and then had all their servers crash and their website "disappeared"
Chachi 09-20-2002, 09:41 PM amen to that analogy Akash :D
Akash 09-20-2002, 09:44 PM after your edit:
from the addlink website:
Our backups are weekly, full system backups to off-system locations. Most hosting companies only backup their systems to another hard drive on the same system. We feel this is not enough, as it cannot protect against forces of nature, that is why we do not store backups on the same server.
They do weekly backups offsystem because they feel hard drive backups aren't enough, yet they dont do it daily???
and of course from their testimonials page
"... WOW! That is what I call a fast response! I got a reply from you guys in 12 minutes after sending you a request for a quote. Thanks! ..."
Anonymous Happy Future Customer
I haven't gone indepth into their website, so i'm not not recommending them, but as a customer, my first impressions are not too good...
Gordo 09-20-2002, 09:47 PM Looks like a solid plan, if it works.
What bothers me is the statement 24/7 support. How many thousand $25 a year accounts would have to be established to pay for 5 support people, which is probably the reasonable minimum.
Chachi 09-20-2002, 09:47 PM Doesn't seem to be any info on them on WebHostingTalk, i just ran a search for you. This is pulled from the whois record for their domain, basically showing they've been in business for:

Unlike other hosts they've put their info on there, including a phone number. The domain's been in existance since 2001. So unless Add-Links purchased the domain from someone else, i'd say they've been in business for some time. Of course you shouldn't use this to make your final judgement on. Maybe you could ask for a 2 week trial?
Akash 09-20-2002, 09:49 PM Maybe you could ask for a 2 week trial?
Great idea :)
intellec 09-20-2002, 09:49 PM You may be able to do better. The disk space and the bandwidth look a little on the light side. Shop around.
Akash 09-20-2002, 09:51 PM The disk space and the bandwidth look a little on the light side
For $25/year its a little on the light side??? How do you figure?
peteny 09-20-2002, 09:52 PM Ofcourse the deal is good, but when the server is down.. It's not that good anymore, you're better off paying more and getting high quality webhosting..

. . .Bob's Bait and Tackle don't supply hosting.
Now, if I would have said, Bob's Bait and Tackle AND Hosting, I would agree with you.
Chachi 09-20-2002, 09:54 PM I echo what Intellec said about shopping around. My first web host turned out to be a one man operation, running as a reseller. The person pretended to be a real web host with his own data centre and servers and a special technical support department. Although the service wasn't bad (domain = entertainmentdaily.net, check it out yourselves, UK bandwidth there!) and I still have that account with him, however if I had shopped around I'd have found a much cheaper deal and a host who actually knew what they were doing. I've made several requests for certain perl_mods to be installed, and although I keep getting a "we've installed it now" message from the host, they still aren't working for me.
The web hosting request forum gets slated a lot because most people want the world for free or very little amounts of money. but if you have a serious request and need, I'm sure you'll find a great offer there!
