View Full Version : Dot5Hosting: Simply Dreadful Service from Dot5Hosting

I opened an account with Dot5Hosting 8 days ago. They were a little slow opening my website up, which I posted about here -- something to do with a glitch in their accounting system, making them think I hadn't paid.

You might want to expand on what was dreadful about the service with the exception of the setup time :)

Sorry about that, hit Enter by accident.

I had paid, of course:

Here is my e-mail from shopper@uk.worldpay.com:

Thank you, you've paid

Safely. Securely. Welcome to WorldPay, trusted worldwide.

Your payment...
at 12 Sep 2002 00:20:24 GMT
you made a payment for $179.99
to DOT5hosting for Dot5Hosting+Hosting+Invoice.
Reference:***

Apparently Dot5Hosting's automated accounting system didn't register this payment. As a result, they didn't turn on my website until I complained, at which point Tony Kammerer (Tony@Dot5Hosting.com) manually turned on my website. They also comped me a Dot4 account when I'd paid for a Dot3 -- about a $50 a year difference.

So that's where I left it off with my last post here ... a little slow to set up the websie, but everything was OK.

On 9/14 I received the following from them:

Hello Daniel Moran,
This is a notice that your invoice *** has been generated for services by on 2002/09/14.
Total Due: $179.99
Due Date: 2002/09/14
Your payment type is: Credit Card
Please click here to pay via WorldPay:

Despite the fact that I'd paid. I contacted them and they assured me there was a technical glitch in the accounting system, but they were on top of it.

On 9/18 I received the following:

Hello,
I am writing to you on behalf of Dot5Hosting.com. Our records show that you currently have an account with us which has an overdue invoice.

You can pay this invoice by logging onto your account via:

https://www.securedot5hosting.com/billing/

You will have 24 hours in which to pay this invoice, after this time your account will be suspended for a week before being finally deleted from our system. You account will become live once payment is received, although if payment has not been received within the week all data will be lost.

Kind regards,

Then I'm having trouble understanding why you started this thread if you are satisfied.

"A little slow to set up; but everything is OK" is a lot different than ,"simply dreadful service."

[edit]

Okay. You posted another while I was posting.
It seems as though it's a billing error.
What did they say when you contacted them?

FatSam
09-20-2002, 04:51 PM
This was my response to them;

Boy, you guys are not making me happy.

Here's what Tony Kammerer told me:

>I will make sure that our accounts department clears up the billing with
>Worldpay, but you will not have to worry about it any further.

Here's the actual completion code from Worldpay:

LakersTalk.com
Thank you, your payment was successful
Merchant's Reference: ***
WorldPay Transaction ID: ********
Please contact WorldPay immediately if there has been a problem making your payment.

If my website ceases functioning (after having taken too long to start functioning) I'm going to be really ticked. Get your act together, would you?

This was their response:

Hello Daniel Moran,
2002/09/18
You invoice *** in the amount of $179.99 has been processed.

You may login to your account and view your invoice anytime.

Yesterday my website went down for about 20 minutes. I contacted Tony Kammerrer, he was very apologetic -- their automated accounting system still didn't think I'd paid. They shut me down. He fixed it and said it wouldn't happen again.

Yesterday afternoon we invited 20 or 30 people over to come use the websire, register & start chatting on the LakersTalk forums.

Today I'm down again and have been for about 5 hours now. No one is answering Dot5Hosting IM support. No one is answering my e-mails. No one has turned my website back on.

I'm just thoroughly frustrated and outraged. This problem, this "accounting glitch," has been going on for over a week. They haven't fixed it and perhaps don't know how. What's certain is this:

- My credit card was charged.
- For a week I tried to resolve this problem with them
- My website went down yesterday and they said it wouldn't happen again
- My website is down for 5 hours now with no response from them.

Maybe it's time to give up. Cut your losses. And move on.
Sad. But, not every host is right for everyone.

Oh, I'm probably going to. I just wanted to vent and this seemed like an effective place to do it.

Who is this "We"? Are you Dot5?

FatSam

Clanscc, you said in another thread you were a customer of theirs? You listed two domains you had hosted with Dot5:

www.starcraftconfederacy.org
www.destructionshorde.com

Both of them seem to be up right now.

This is just me talking, but it lloks like Dot5 forgot to check what user they were logged in as and posted as one of there 'customer' usernames. ;) (Purely speculation - but seems pretty straight forward.) For those following WHT, many think they Spam the boards. Funny thing is that soon after this was brought up, the post stopped. hmmm..

Anyway, this is just my thought.

My site is back up, I suspect because of the post made here.

Still no response from Dot5 to any e-mails or anything else.

Has anyone else ever had a problem like this with Dot5? I selected them in part because so many people (Dot5 in disguise?) posted here about their good results.

Anything you are speculating now, is just that.
A mod will be along and sort it out.

However odd it may seem; most hosts have members that view themselves as more than that.
Just as this forum has members that think they are mods and such.
I know that over-zealous clients can often make things look a little bizarre.
I will hold my opinion in this matter until a moderator confirms one way or the other.

Nah, clancc is also a member of the forums over at dot5. Personally, I think he's just a guy that loves dot5 so much he thinks he's an employee of the company. (I've had a reseller do that..)

Fair enough. But when there is doubt like many have, he should probably post it to let people know he got that from dot5.

Just to clear things up (which it seems I keep having to do)
Clanscc has recently been hired to work part time for
Dot5hosting.com by myself. I would appreciate it if any
accusations made towards our company be handled in a more
professional manor such as (like Chicken instructed) research and
come up with some form of proof about anything you would like
to accuse us (falsely) of. In my opinion, if you do not even contact
someone such as myself or Chris (Puggy106) to see what is true
than you should certainly not try to state something that can
harm our reputation in such a devastating way.
I am sure you all understand that anything even slightly bad that
is said on this forum about a host will hurt their business. So
consider what kind of affect it has on a host who receives 75% of
their customers from this forum.

FatSam, I am very sorry for the downtime today. As I stated in my
response to your helpdesk request, the problem was caused by
another site generating an extremely high volume of errors in the
Tomcat error log which caused Apache to shutdown when the
log reached 2.0gb in size. I have taken the needed precautions
to prevent this from being an issue in the future.
Your site is running correctly again.

As unfortunate is this was, you must understand that not
everything can be foreseen in advance. Many problems have to
arise before you know that they exist. And when they arise, it is
just a matter of resolving them ASAP, and finding a way to
prevent them from occurring again.

<snip>

If you feel you need to clear a lot of things up, then maybe there is something wrong???

As a piece of advise, if someone is going to post and represent a hosting company, maybe they should put that in their sig? Just a thought.

It is good you hired him to work for you. He did good work for you before hand too. Take care.

Also, Ensim has a serious issue with that 2 GB Tomcat log as well as the apche log. The best thing to do it is run a cron to delete those logs every few days. Also, for any Ensim user, those Tomcat logs fill up quick because they record every minut bit of activity. If your web server has dies on Ensim and can not be restarted, check that first.

FatSam.....The billing problem was actually a problem with Worldpay ...When the automated billing came in for me it came in with a 2003 date to pay and then would not allow me to pay....I also got the notice about suspension, however it is just an automated response and dot5 assured me they would not suspend the account ( and they didn't) I was never down, although it took about 4-5 days for me to finally get my invoice paid...........I have not been down and have always had very quick response time and very good support from dot5.

Hope this helps to alleviate some of your questions about dot5support.
I should say I have only been with them about 2 1/2 months lest I be flamed for omission.

I also had a billing problem with dot5hosting back at the end of August. I also don't care whether the problem was dot5's or WorldPay's, as it's all the same from my point of view. The result was that my site was down for about 15 minutes one Sunday.

Luckily dot5 sorted the problem and had me back online quickly. Every webhost will experience problems, so for me the determining factors are how many problems there are and how they deal with these problems. Dot5 passed the test with flying colours as far as I'm concerned - I haven't experienced many problems, and they've all been dealt with well.

Lastly, what's with a number of the web hosts hanging out in this forum just tearing into other webhosts? No offence, but those posts and the users thus don't get much respect from me.

In contrast, I've seen just a couple of webhosts restrain themselves here. Much better, and I'm much more interested in what they have to say. IMO that's the way to gain credibility and respect.
