View Full Version : WHT Ads, How big is too big?

I for one like to see new ads on WHT, the same old ads get boring. But how big is too big? I have nothing against GearHost but the ad is kind of big. It’s 960 x 415 on my screen and the ad is scaleable, so a person with 640 x 480 would have to scroll 2-pages just to get to the forum.

Any other opinions?

Whatever WHT does; it does. We have the option of not visiting.
Of course, if everyone had to scroll two pages to view the forum, it is likely most would stop visiting.
The ad you mention is large. I suppose I'm lucky that I have a large screen resolution.

I've already complained to xtstrike about this....for now I've given up my push for WHT to give up the top banner ad completely...I suggested to xtstrike that we switch to cnet's "expanding ad
solution"....i'm sure no one will mind a high quality 20-30 second flash ad (like a commercial) that drops down every 30 minutes or so, and then closes up to a 480x60 banner add with an "expand this for more" button for the people that are interested...

edit: changed it to xtstrike for those of us that aren't on a first name basis...

Remember, no ads go up without WHT approval; ours was approved so it's all good. Just wanted to clarify in case anyone though we we're violating WHT ad guidelines.

Well, I don't think anyone thought you hacked an ad up with no one looking, Ryan. :)

It would probably be good for WHT to institute some type of standard regarding size though. Whatever that would be. It would just make things flow nicer if they were all the same size.

You say'n I'm no good ;)
I see the point and do agree, a formal presentation/standard for the ads should be placed or at least followed with some margin.

The size of the ads appearing lately is

I feel sorry for those folks on slow connections.

how bout that yourownisp ad?? that thing is even bigger than gearhost's ad...

Funny you mention YourOwnISP.com. Just away to come here and post about that very thing. That ad certainly takes the cake. WHT is simply becoming 'annoying' to visit with ads that size. Ads are fine, whole page take overs are another thing

So akash ... seems this really hits home with you. Are you the new WHT ad council? Just kidding man but I would chill out a bit, like SoftWareRevue said it's WHT and let them do as they please. I do agree about having some limitations though.

like i said earlier, i've gven up my push for a "banner-ad free WHT", just make it smaller like before, that's all i'm asking for right now...

I think Akash is justified in raising his concern and contacting people - if there is something that affects the webhostingtalk.com members negatively, we should let rackshack knows about it.

Rackshack has been very considerate about our feelings and they want the best for webhostingtalk.com. There is no reason for us to "hide" our feelings or ignore them, as this ultimately hurts both the webhostingtalk.com community and Rackshack's ownership/profitability.

yep....

i mean i understand that RS wants to recoup its costs, but i think my expanding ad idea would be great (flash ads i'd actually watch) for the forums. lately, they've been pushing it - big ads and one too many stickies...will they start emailing us???

Guys, I am Todd from "YourOwnISP" we submitted the ad but figured WHT would use a smaller font size since we had a lot of text. They used a larger font than we would have liked. I have already sent an email several hours ago asking them to reduce the font size as well. I will work on making the logo a little smaller too. We based our logo on the existing sizes already in the ad rotation.

We can't change the size of text, WHT has to.

Sorry if this is an inconvenience to any of you but please remember, we just paid for the ad and submitted it. We did not pick the font size or placement etc.

Should be a bit smaller as soon as WHT responds to our request.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Definitely too big, try with a laptop and you would thing that your video card is broke...

This kind of invasive ads put me away from the adviser.

ads on the top are ok - just limit the number of characters that the text part can be in length etc....:)

You guys are right. We'll be implementing a standard max size on the logo as well as a character limit. These will probably be along the size of what Dot5 is running, maybe a little smaller.

It just got out of hand.

Thanks headsurfer!

(Was worried we would eventually see those full page ads, You've seen them, before you can view the page the entire page is an ad, then the intended page is showed) =)

I'd actually prefer seeing this "expanded ad"

It wouldn't be full page, more like cnets 1/2 page, and would show up like every XX minutes (>=30). Then the ad would contract to an area that's about 1/3 of the size we have right now.

Flash ads are nifty little buggers - i think people will come back to see the ads if they are made correctly ;)

but i'll take a smaller ad over the huge ones any day :)

thanks again HS

Regarding the isp ad, by the way, it seemed to me when I saw it that the real problem with it was a bunch of extraneous line breaks. But that was really just a glance the times I've seen it displayed; I've never really examined it or read it (because it's so ugly, I suppose! :)) so my impression may have been wrong.

I don't like ads, but I dont pay for WHT either. If you don't like them, you can always start scrolling before it loads :o I use 800X600 and the ad takes up a whole page, so all I have to do is click on the middle of the scrollbar, heh.

If you really think they should go, you can always offer to send WHT a donation :erm:

I think this thread has done is job and should be closed, the Headsurfer has agreed it was becoming a problem. I am sure it will be corrected in due time.

Thanks again

No flash ads please! Thanks for agreeing to make them smaller, Robert, though I'd prefer no ads at the top, or at most a 600x100 banner size limit.

I agree - a standard size would be good. In fact when I first saw those ads, I thought my screen resolution was screwy :D

New Guidelines:

Logo to left

1 Main title line of text
5 Lines of ad copy
1 bottom link line

Logo may not be taller than the combined 7 lines of text.

We'll be working with all of our advertisers to implement this this week. Hopefully, sooner rather than later so EVERYONE is happy.

We are making some changes today and will be working with the advertisers to make additional changes. Hopefully, everyone will work with us to reduce the size of their ads.

It may take a few more days, but you will see some changes tonight.

I am trying to overly fair to all involved.

Well, they haven't got smaller yet, and I thought Robert's wife said we'd notice a difference by Tuesday. Well, it's Thursday, 2 days later, and instead of seeing reduced ads, I see Robert added one of his own.

What are you talking about? Has RackShack not put up an ad of their own in the rotation? Digital Isles ad and others still cover nearly a whole screen. I think people forget that these big ads really slow down the many of us that use a 56K connection, and don't realize that they fill the entire screen on 800x600, which many people use.
