Hello all, I have been reading the forums for a while and thought it was time I got a few posts in...

I'm looking to buy a linux server, I have *around* 2,000 to buy one, I haven't yet found a deal that I have liked enough yet though, I have tried compunite.com they have some good Intel servers but cant get a great config for 2,000.

I would like to buy from a good name if possible, so i can have peace of mind and sleep at night :)

If anyone has used any other service/make please post your recommendations,

Thanks again,

John

Are you looking for a rack server or a tower?

Wonder what your impression of the Dell product is?

1u SCSI ~ $1500
1550 Poweredge

IDE starts at less then $1000
350 Poweredge

$300 savings next two days...

Though I don't have any experience with them http://www.racksaver.com/ seems to be pretty popular as well as Dell. I do believe that racksaver is a little cheaper, but part of it may be support.

I have found a system that I quite like the specs of, It is very expensive though:

Va Linux Server (http://www.valinux.com/store/configure.html?cart_line=1220_Better&flag=2&&state_info=.US1P1-28563)

Does anyone know of a similar server at a cheaper price ?

Thanks

Configure this exactly like the VA server:

$2088 (That includes the PC Power&Cooling).

http://www.penguincomputing.com - Very nice servers at a great price.

http://www.valinux.com - dreamy =)

http://www.pogolinux.com - Seem to have very nice systems, although i haven't used them, they are rumoured to be very good.

Do a search on PogoLinux first at least you will see most of the posts about them.

jon.B in my opinion, these are great dedicated server providers:

http://www.serverhost.com - great place, lots of bandwith, great support, uptime 99%

http://www.dialtoneinternet.net - solid rock bandwith, dual oc12 sonet ring, great support.. you actually get to talk to someone from the NOC, they can help you straight over the phone, un like some places where you gotta e-mail and wait for them to help you

http://www.pogolinux.com - great servers, $150/mo though, co-located with one of above.net's oc48's, 99% uptime, also solid rock

*****.com - we ordered a server from there, I am waiting for it to be setup/online so i can try it out an dsee what they are like, so i'll have to get back to you on that, their bandwith/datacenter/network specifics seem good though

http://www.rackspace.com
http://www.catalog.com
and one more, http://www.weinbar.com they seem good, oc192, tech support is nice, maybe you can work out a deal with them

I noticed at penguincomputing that you can lease the machine (just the machine) for less than $50 per month (Celeron 733 MHz, 128 MByte, 20 GByte). Some (all?) of the others may also lease the hardware. Charges for extra memory don't seem to be the same gouge that you get from a host-provided-lease.

I priced out a SWEET dell poweredge 350, price, 1500, or 1800 if you don't buy it by the end of the month.

It is a goooood server too, dual hard drives, 750 proc, 256 ram, etc. etc.

Anyone heard of Korstellan.com? They seem to do a nice line in servers indeed:

Dual P3-1Ghz
1Gb RAM
2 x 36Gb SCSI
1U Case
$3215

http://store.yahoo.com/korstellan/1udualprocex.html

It all looks pretty darn good to me and they promise replacement and they use quality brand parts (Well, so they say). anyone know anything about them?

Recently I have been comparing several server manufacturers, this is the outcome:

1. Pogolinux: cheapest on all configurations

2. XComputing: came in second on my configurations, systems seem comparable with PogoLinux

3. Racksaver: Altough their SCSI systems are a lot more expensive, and you need to watch out for the RAM speed (PC-100) etc, which is lower on their basic configurations than the others. Company gives a good impression, and their servers look cool too (red front :))

4. Compunite: has a higher price for basic configurations, but gets cheaper than XComputing on high-end configs, especially with SCSI

5. VA Linux: by far the most expensive (two times more expensive than Pogo on most systems). Quality seems good tough and servers look nice.

There sure are more server manufacturers, but I picked those as my 5 favorites.

NOTE: Racksaver, VA Linux can put all my configs in a 1U server, while the other need a 2U server for some configs.

I must admit, I am very impressed with the Korstellan setup that Karl (KDA Web Services) posted, I haven't found cheaper than that - has anyone ever heard of this company ?

LOL....C'mon after the way they handled themselves and haven't handled themselves. Why would anyone want to do business with them at this time? Maybe if you were buying the server from them and co-locating it somewhere else.

We have a difference in opinion in that I believe you should get good customer service and it appears that you don't think this is an issue. If you look at this from a non-biased standpoint you would agree that Pogo has not handled themselves properly in the racklocation matter at all.

Matrix/Node9...Could we please keep the post on topic? The arguing seems to spread over the top three threads in this category - please stick to the thread, or email each other.

Thanks

It is on topic. He suggested you look at PogoLinux for a server and i'm saying that I wouldnt because of prior things that have taken place.

If you didn't have someone such as myself telling you about PogoLinux then you may go with them without knowing all of the facts.
