Can anyone suggest alternatives for Windows 2000 mail server? needs are the same as everyone else, POP access, web access and a good but strong admin program.
I have looked extensively at Merak but find the customization and web access customization are VERY basic!
Also looked at IPSwitch IMail which is a little better but looking for more alternatives.
Can anyone please provide more suggestions for mail servers for W2K? I'm even thinking about Exchange, but licensing becomes a MAJOR issue. At this point, I only have several hundred users but growing.
Price is an issue but really don't care as long as the server offers maximized flexability.
Please offer a few suggestions and comments!!!
Thanks,
Gary

Well I can't speak for a good alternative....
But I CAN say that I SUGGEST YOU AVOID EXCHANGE 2000.
Other than the cost of the licensing (Very Pricey) it is also a resource hog, and it has occasional issues with actually starting up.
(Whenever I reboot I make myself go in and check the services, because I had many occasions where IMAP and POP3 and a couple other services would lock up in "starting" mode and sit there forever.
Personally I am GLAD that Helm WON'T be supporting Exchange, so I can justify dumping it and getting a product with a smaller footprint that doesnt practically need it's own server.)

What about email programs for the linux/unix-type servers? If you also know of any free software (like mailenable, but for linux), let me know if you know of any. Thanks!

From my post in Aeria's other thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?postid=651904#post651904):Originally posted by no1v2
The most popular *nix MTA's that can be compiled for Linux are Sendmail, QMail, Exim, and Postfix. Just Google them for their sites. You should evaluate them on your own to find out which one fits your needs (not the needs of some random WHT poster ;)).

Sendmail is powerfull, but it tends to be very obscure at times.

Really? What do you mean by "obscure at times?" I haven't setup mail server software, so I have no idea. Thanks!
